OK so here goes.... I'm brand new to saltwater tanks and I'm setting up my first tank. So I saw this thread and wanted to run by everyone with my intended purchases. I have a 75 gallon reef ready, sump, mp40, aquaticlife t5 6bulb. The tank will be a reef tank and it will have live rock. I'm unsure if I should have a dsb or a regular sand bed. Well here's the list....

Ocellaris clown. (Pair)
Kole tang
Foxface
flame angel

Possible fish
- Midas blenny
- watchmen bony
- green mandarin
- blue reef chromis
- 6 line wrasse
- garden eel.... if I do a deep sand bed

Kole tang
Foxface I would not put two largish fish in a 75 gallon tank
flame angel

Possible fish
- Midas blenny
- watchmen goby
- green mandarin
- blue reef chromis
- 6 line wrasse Very aggressive and eats copepods which makes a mandarin more difficult
- garden eel.... if I do a deep sand bed

so the fox face is a no go and the 6line wrasse... thank you for the answer. when i come up with replacements... now what about a sea star. can i put a sand sifting star in there or would it mess things up with a deep sand bed

A sand sifting sea star will deplete your sand bed of beneficial organisms and then starve to death. For that purpose, I recommend a fighting conch

in your opinion what do you think would be some other fish that would go with the fish i have listed above... or do you think that would be to much fish in there?

I understand the Kole Tang is a sand sifter of sorts and was wondering if they would deplete the pods my mandarin is living on. I've had my mandarin about a year but it won't eat anything I put in the tank so I need to be careful not to deplete his food source in the tank.

I think a small fish or two would be appropriate. However we never suggest fish as our taste and budget are likely different. I would be happy to comment on compatibility, however.

No, a Kole tang will not present copepod competition

Price isnt a issue since im saving for everything I want to buy. but in your opinion what would be one or two really good fish that are compatible with the rest of the fish i have listed... obviously not including the 6 line and the foxface because you know more then me and i wouldnt want a warzone in my tank

I have a couple more questions. I realize ich survival rate is better in higher salinity levels, also necessary for coral survival.

In a just fish tank, no live rock, just artificial reef, with a salinity level between 1.015-1.020 can ich still survive and thrive?

I remember when I had my 180 fowlr tank, I had the salinity level around those ranges I gave, plus a u.v. and I had very little to no problems at all with ich outbreaks. The fish were fine in those salinity levels as well.

My second question is, can ich find their way into the filter media of a quarantine tank and multiply there instead?, as long as there's no substrate for them to burrow and multiply in?
Thanks.

Any pointers on a blue spot jawfish in a 180g. I believe you have or had one and based on what I've read on here I will be keeping the tank at about 75-76 with some spikes to 80-82 in the summer during the day. Will be housed with what are typically considered peaceful fish. About 2in sandbed is planned with caribsea special grade. Other long shaped fish and bottom or perching fish would be yellow watchman w/ tiger pistol shrimp and a starry blenny.

With out listing all the fish here's a collage of current and planned fish mainly because it was fun to put together and looks cool.

Well I love candy basslets, gold or blue assessors, flasher wrasses.

This thread is not (!) about disease management. There is a special forum for that which I answer when I have time. This once, I will answer those questions but will not entertain discussion of those answers on this thread.

cryptocaryon irritans survival rate is independent of salinity until it reaches exactlyh 1.009 as measured by a calibrated refractometer

Yes, it will.

UV will have no effect on ich

For a complete life cycle ich needs fish. No fish, and it will eventually (about 9 weeks) die out. It can be transferred on almost anything but with no fish, it will not survive

Thanks.

While the collage is cool, it makes providing commentary logistically difficult as I have to manage images which I will not see in the reply.

25 gallon cube

25 gallon cube

hi guys, in the proccess of setting up my tank right now (thread in the nano tank forum section) and i wanted to run past my ideas just to make sure they work fine.

25gallon cube (18x18x18)
AI sol nano LED fixture
40gallon sump
NWB110 octopus skimmer
2 koralia 450gph pumps
300gph overflow
20lbs of dry rock in display
9lb display rock in display
40lbs of live rock in sump
bare bottom

Mainly wish to keep SPS and clams in the tank, but will have a few softies.

fish:
3-5 pajama cardinals
1 panda goby
1 mandarin goby (after tank establishes)
5 sexy shrimp (after i add all my corals)

And a CUC recommended by reefcleaners.

i dont think i really have enough room for anything else, but i want to put a mantis shrimp in my sump or something else interesting.

Also, another quick question, do i need a CUC in my sump? and if so, what would be best because there are a bunch of tubes and stuff they can get stuck in (along with an ATO switch)...

EDIT: i almost forgot to ask, what should i keep my salinity and tempature at for this aquarium?
Thanks in advance!

fish:
3-5 pajama cardinals A bit on the high side with 5 and remember that they can eat small fish
1 panda goby
1 mandarin goby (after tank establishes) You will not have sufficient copepods for this and ORA mandarins are a hit or miss and require spot feeding multiple times per day.
5 sexy shrimp (after i add all my corals)

And a CUC recommended by reefcleaners.

While I love mantis shrimp I recommend a completely separate tank for these

Also, another quick question, do i need a CUC in my sump? and if so, what would be best because there are a bunch of tubes and stuff they can get stuck in (along with an ATO switch)...

No CUC in your sump

I prefer 76 F and 1.0264 as measured with a calibrated refractometer

Thanks in advance!

Hi Guys,

I have a Aqua Medic 120 Pecula Bow front tank, circa 118 gallons. At the moment current residents include a Yellow tang, 4 Clowns (I inherited a 2nd pair when I moved the tank, been in there for a couple of weeks with no problems yet)

Couple of questions,

The pair of Clowns that I inherited are true pecs as are my originals. My originals were only babies and were no more then 2cm in size I would guess the new ones are almost full grown circa 7-8cm in size. When I moved the tank I moved all the rock and the one coral (a large leather) they were hosting in and introduced them at the same time and they haven't fought yet and all are feeding and huddled together in the coral. So instead of 2 pairs I have one "gaggle" of 4, 2 large and 2 small.

Are they likely to just one day start knocking 5 bells out of each other? If so I will likely move the smaller ones on before that happens as it is not fair on them to take the risk.

Secondly, I love the look of Anthias, what is the bottom line on these, are they hard to keep, difficult to feed?

Being honest this place is such a great resource that I wanted to get some feedback on here before I seriously look into it as I am abit of a "they didnt ask to be in my tank" kinda guy and dont want to harm any fish under my care.

Other fish in my tank include : 1 x Royal Gamma, 1 x Pearlscale Butterfly, 1 x Firefish, 2 x Green Chromis plus the tang and 4 clowns.

This is a Fish and live rock aquarium with the exception of the leather coral that the clowns are hosting in but the Butterfly hasnt even looked at it.

Any advice on the 2 points above would be gratefully received.

All the best

Peter

ok thank you! so you think 3 pajama cardinals, a panda goby, and maybe a clown goby, or some other small community fish like a firefish would do well?

What could i put in my sump to liven it up a bit, if i cant put any fish/inverts i might try some mangroves.
