Any pointers on a blue spot jawfish in a 180g. I believe you have or had one and based on what I've read on here I will be keeping the tank at about 75-76 with some spikes to 80-82 in the summer during the day. Will be housed with what are typically considered peaceful fish. About 2in sandbed is planned with caribsea special grade. Other long shaped fish and bottom or perching fish would be yellow watchman w/ tiger pistol shrimp and a starry blenny.

Ooops so sorry I missed the BSJ question. I recommend cooler temperatures for them all year long as they are collected in the Sea of Cortez. Your sand bed is a bit shallow for them, but you may be able to finesse that with PVC pipe constructed to provide them a home. Maybe 1.5 inches in diameter. Great fish but there have been relatively few successes.

Thanks. If the wife really wants it and I think I do too I may have to get a chiller then for the summer spikes. I could try and shape the sand bed a bit to be thicker in one end and add in a pvc pipe. I think I saw a post of someone creating some fake rock shaped and attached to the end of a pvc pipe. how long do you think the pvc should be and should it angle at all?

Once you get one you will be glad you did as they are exceptionally personable fish. If it were me I would have a 3 inch run with 45 degree bend and another 2 inches. Completely bury it (may need more sand). Provide some live rock rubble (s(he) will use it) and with reasonable temperature, you should be good to go. Remember, cooler is better. I keep all my tanks at 76F all the time

Thanks. I may get away with fans on the sump as I'm switching to LED only and trying to get low wattage pumps where I can. I can certainly setup a pvc run like that. Last question, should the back end be capped or open? I imagine open?

Would the below two be ok together in a 40 gallon breeder. Has about 40 pounds of live rock total.

Line Spot Flasher Wrasse (male) 2-1/2"
Royal Flasher Wrasse (male) 3"

These two would be joined by more peaceful fish such as firefish, grammas, etc....

Thanks in advance.

LED will help with heat a lot and the pumps will also help. Leave the back open.

Normally I prefer 50 gallon tank minimums for flasher wrasses. The two fish will not be a problem together behaviorally. You MUST have a mesh top with 1/4 inch holes.

Hi Guys,

I have a Aqua Medic 120 Pecula Bow front tank, circa 118 gallons. At the moment current residents include a Yellow tang, 4 Clowns (I inherited a 2nd pair when I moved the tank, been in there for a couple of weeks with no problems yet)

Couple of questions,

The pair of Clowns that I inherited are true pecs as are my originals. My originals were only babies and were no more then 2cm in size I would guess the new ones are almost full grown circa 7-8cm in size. When I moved the tank I moved all the rock and the one coral (a large leather) they were hosting in and introduced them at the same time and they haven't fought yet and all are feeding and huddled together in the coral. So instead of 2 pairs I have one "gaggle" of 4, 2 large and 2 small.

Are they likely to just one day start knocking 5 bells out of each other? If so I will likely move the smaller ones on before that happens as it is not fair on them to take the risk.

Secondly, I love the look of Anthias, what is the bottom line on these, are they hard to keep, difficult to feed?

Being honest this place is such a great resource that I wanted to get some feedback on here before I seriously look into it as I am abit of a "they didnt ask to be in my tank" kinda guy and dont want to harm any fish under my care.

Other fish in my tank include : 1 x Royal Gamma, 1 x Pearlscale Butterfly, 1 x Firefish, 2 x Green Chromis plus the tang and 4 clowns.

This is a Fish and live rock aquarium with the exception of the leather coral that the clowns are hosting in but the Butterfly hasnt even looked at it.

Any advice on the 2 points above would be gratefully received.

All the best

Peter

Anyone got any feedback on Anthias? or the clown situation?

Since this is not a discussion thread, the only opinion you will get is mine.

Yes, the clowns will not tolerate 4, two will win, the other two will lose

Anthias are not difficult but need a large tank if more than one. Pick an easy species e.g. resplendent or carberryi.

Hiya,

It was your feedback I was looking for :)

*Salute*

With a 4ft Bow fronted tank, circa 120gallons could I keep 3 or 4?

All the best

I just added a large coral banded shrimp to my tank. I know it was an inadvisable move, perhaps in more ways than one, but I love CBS and he'll stay.

Obviously, I just limited my fish possibilities dramatically. I'm hoping for some suggestions on larger or more aggressive fish that would have a better chance of avoiding becoming a meal for this shrimp. I have a 75g tank, currently with no fish.

Fish I've been considering for a while are: sixline wrasse, small tang (bristletooth), paired clowns.

snorvich, I promise I am not posting this to irritate you! :)

Hey Snorvich,
My main tank has just finished cycling and I would like feedback on my proposed stock list

2 false perculas (tank raised, in my QT tank now)
1 Dispar Anthias
1 Flame Angel
2 Bicolor Dottybacks
1 Mandarin (in about 6 to 12 mths, fuge is running now)

Would this be a compatible fish list with each other and my tank?

Tank Details
70 gal display tank <with live rock> (48"x18"x20")
45 gal sump <including 25 gal refuge with cheato> (48"x15"x18")
4x T8 lights (2x marine blue, 1x tropical, 1x powerglo)
UV steralizer (ordered, waiting on delivery)
Aquaone Protein Skimmer G220 (ordered, waiting on delivery)
660 gph powerhead and 1000 gph mag pump (return in sump, throttled)

Whenever constraints are added, choices become reduced. I would go with the bristletooth tang.

1 Dispar Anthias
1 Flame Angel
2 Bicolor Dottybacks Extremely aggressive, The Bicolor Dottyback will not be intimidated by other fish and will defend its territory against fish two to three times its size. It will also eat ornamental shrimp and is a predator of nuisance bristleworms. I doubt that two would survive together

You offered me three choices; I picked the most likely to succeed. But if you want a discussion, please post your question in Reef Fishes.

My apologies. Above my three fish of general interest, I thought I had asked for some suggestions.

I appreciate very much the recommendation of the tang.

On this thread I don't give suggestions since your budget and taste will almost certainly differ from mine. Also, "suggestions" implies a discussion thread which is far better in Reef Fish. Tank size and other inhabitants are constraints so every time you add an invertebrate or fish, you are potentially constraining future choices. If you provide a stocking list, tank size and all inhabitants, I will be happy to provide compatibility commentary.

i just bought a used 28g NC, 6 days ago. I already killed 1 margarita snail and 1 Coral Banded shrimp. Both died within 2 days, The funny thing...the blue damsel seems to be happy! just sayin...
