Your fire shrimp may be at risk. Otherwise you should probably be ok as long as you have sand and a tight fitting top.

Haven't set up the tank yet it is a work in progress but would like to hear some suggestions for schooling fish. I have a 300g acrylic tank with a 40g sump, 20g fuge, 20 g ATO. Getting a Aqua C 240 modded for a protein skimmer, will be running, carbon and gfo. Currently planning on running 3x250w MH. Have about 160 lbs base rock and will add 20-30 lbs live rock when I set it up. Looking for suggestions for small to medium social fish that will school and a few unique fish that dont have to school but at the same time wont harrass my schooling fish.

We do not provide suggestions for fish as our tastes will differ; we will provide analysis of compatibility of fish with each other and the environment you are providing. That being said you will not get fish to "school". Best fish type for shoaling are peaceful anthias.

hello, i was just wondering whats a good fish for eating planaria flatworms...im really against chemicals and looking for a natural predator....thanks

75 gallon tank

Christmas Wrasse (Halichoeres claudia ) which requires a sand bed, although flatworm exit is very/more effective.

is the christmas wrasse aggressive? i made the mistake of getting a falco hawk and i never want an aggressive fish again

It should not be towards fish. It may put shrimp at risk. And it does require sand. It will eat fireworms and pyramidellid snails, protecting corals and clams. In addition, it may eat feather dusters, wild shrimp, tubeworms, and flatworms. It may also eat parasites off of tank mates. The Christmas Wrasse diet should include vitamin enriched frozen mysis shrimp, vitamin enriched frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods along with a high quality marine flake and marine pellet food.

thank you so much.....do you think the christmas wrasse is a better choice for flatworm eradication than the melanarus?

I dislike recommending fish in general as there are a lot of variables associated with individual tanks. I do not recommend melanarus wrasses as they will decimate your cleanup crew. . I certainly do not want to say one wrasse is better than another.

55gal reef tank, about 3 months old at this point.
I have 2 percula clownfish in there, 3-4 corals (yelllow polyps+mystery coral, flowerpot, hammer). I have an emerald crab, some snails and hermits and most recently a horseshoe crab which my whole family loves. I now have to make sure he is well fed.

wish list for fish:
yellow tang
hippo tang
flame angel
butterflyfish (not sure which I like best racoon maybe)
maybe a firefish goby or something else that size that is colorful.

wish list for fish:
yellow tang Requires larger tank
hippo tang Requires much larger tank
flame angel
butterflyfish (not sure which I like best racoon maybe) There is no truly reef safe butterfly except a pyramid or zoster
maybe a firefish goby or something else that size that is colorful.

Both those crabs will cause you problems, unfortunately

Too small of a tank for both the hippo and yellow makes me sad, especially my kids. Those were the 2 they really wanted. I thought I read somewhere that 55gal was the minimum. I was thinking if I got them small they would be ok. I guess I need to look for other fish to get instead.

Sorry. The RC suggested minimum for hepatus tangs is 240 gallons (length is more important than gallons) . They grow quickly reaching about a foot in length and are "swimmers"

Very, very, VERY preliminary stock/wish list...

Very, very, VERY preliminary stock/wish list...

So, as long as I'm sitting here day dreaming, I figured I'd post my VERY preliminary wish list for my 180 and get initial comments so that I can reset expectations appropriately...

:jester:

**everything is dry right now...nothing is assembled or wet**

Display Tank: 180 gal, 72"x25"x25"
Rock: 240 lbs dry rock on order from Marco & BRS - will supplement with additional 40-50 lbs of "premium" live rock from LFS
Substrate: 180-ish lbs of crushed aragonite - medium grit, will be seeded with small amount of live sand from LFS
Sump: Yes
Fuge w/LR rubble and macro algae: Yes
Skimmer: Yes
CUC: All snails/fighting conchs/etc. No crabs. No shrimp.
Corals: Softies, zoas, leathers, etc. - maybe an LPS or two.

So...fish wish list, in no particular order:

1 ea Blue Eye Tang (Ctenochaetus binotatus)
3 ea Pyramid Butterflyfish (Hemitaurichthys polylepis) (would add at same time)
2 ea Flame Angelfish (Centropyge loricula ) (would add at same time...and understand them not being truly "reef safe", but am willing to take the risk, particularly with planned "inexpensive" corals)
1 ea Flame Hawkfish (Neocirrhitus armatus)
2 ea Ocellaris Clowns (Amphiprion ocellaris) (tank bred, would add at same time)
1 ea Yellow Prawn Goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus)

I would also like a small group of anthias (N. carberryi or P. pulcherrimus), but realize that I may be pushing maximum density with a pair of clowns and possibly 15" (3 x 5") of butterflys.

Also, after the tank has been established for a year or so, I'd like to add a RBT anemone and a green mandarin fish (P. splendidus).

Thoughts and admonishments are welcome and much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!!!

No real incompatibilities. The tank will be a bit "busy" with the number of fish you are planning. Yellow pyramid butterfly fish get a bit large but not too much so. It is only the crowded look that I would consider further

Thanks in advance!!!

Thanks much, Steve...

I will certainly consider the potential "busy-ness" of the tank as I get closer to actually stocking anything. More than anything, I was just hoping that I was on the right track with my general direction.

Again...many thanks!

Always a pleasure. The "busy-ness" is not extreme, just something to consider.
