Thanks for your perspective, Steve.

If I pass on the flasher wrasse- and choose a different clown species- would that work?
If I do a clown at all, I was hoping to do something other than a percula or occelaris. Most
others that I might be interested in (cinnamon, saddleback, three banded) seem to be around the same level of aggression as the allardi.

That is correct. Why even do a clownfish?

Thoughts?

Hi Snorvich,

Think I have narrowed down what I want to legitimately put into my tank. 220 gallon, 3 inch live sand base, 150 lbs live rock. This is the order I am thinking, any advice?

ocellaris clown pair
starry blenny
fairy wrasse
yellow prawn goby
orange stripe prawn goby
firefish pair
royal gramma basslet
flame angel
hippo tang
achilles tang
yellow and purple tang congruently
green dragonette
copperband butterfly

Steve, sorry if this is a bit off topic but what is your avatar?

A pregnant male leafy sea dragon. Image was taken (by me) off of Kangaroo Island in southern Australia. They are an endangered, highly protected cousin of a sea horse. They feed on live mysis shrimp. Water temperature was 60F, depth was 45 feet.

ocellaris clown pair
starry blenny
fairy wrasse species? Some are aggressive
yellow prawn goby two shrimp gobies may or may not work
orange stripe prawn goby
firefish pair two only if you are able to get a bonded pair; this is very unlikely as they are not sold as such
royal gramma basslet
flame angel
hippo tang four tangs will be difficult even in this sized tank; three is more likely to work. Tank length is most critical
achilles tang
yellow and purple tang congruently
green dragonette
copperband butterfly difficult; best chance is the Australian Endemic, but multiple tangs may diminish the likelihood of success

fine except as annotated

New Build

40G Breeder. Somewhere between 30-50lbs of live rock, depending on how things fit.

Should be a mixed reef, I have 1 piece of sps in my nano already.

Intended occupants:
(2) A. Occelaris clownfish
(1) Rose bulb tip anemone
(1) Blue and gold Blenny
(1) White Banded Possum Wrasse
(1) Purple firefish
Assorted snails, turbo, astrea, nassarius, trochus
(1) Skunk cleaner shrimp
(1) Blood red fire shrimp
(3) Peppermint shrimp
(3) Sexy Anemone Shrimp
(Any dwarf hermit crabs who are still alive in my nano, should be 2 or 3)

hey Steve! a little advice if you could, please:

i'm getting ready to upgrade my 75 gallon to a 150 gallon (72"x18"x29") and am starting to think through the stocking.

currently i have in my 75:

Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma flavescens) x1
Percula Clownfish (Amphiprion percula) x2
Mandarin (Synchiropus splendidus) x1
Sailfin/Algae Blenny (Salarias fasciatus) x1

Pajama Cardinalfish (Sphaeramia nematoptera) x3
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus carpenteri) x1 (had one before but sadly found a way out through the screen) :(
One Spot Foxface (Siganus unimaculatus) x1
Copperband Butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus) x1
Blue Throat Trigger (Xanthichthys auromarginatus) x1

my biggest concern would be any potential conflicts with the Mandarin, which makes me leery of the trigger.

i keep a mixed reef, with clams, and some cleaner shrimp. i know the trigger may be hit or miss with the shrimp/snails/hermits.

i'm negotiable on the copperband/foxface.

thank you!

In a perfect world, if possible, keep the 75 going for a while before transferring the Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma flavescens) so it cannot establish territory in the new tank. The other issue is the mandarin should, if possible, wait until the new tank is mature for sufficient copepod availability. Once the tank is well established there will be sufficient copepods for the copper band (Australian endemic preferred)

Pajama Cardinalfish (Sphaeramia nematoptera) x3
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus carpenteri) x1 (had one before but sadly found a way out through the screen) :( they are tricky. I hear mine bouncing off the canopy periodically
One Spot Foxface (Siganus unimaculatus) x1
Copperband Butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus) x1
Blue Throat Trigger (Xanthichthys auromarginatus) x1

my biggest concern would be any potential conflicts with the Mandarin, which makes me leery of the trigger. The trigger may or may not work with the mandarin; my guess is it will. The copperband will compete with the mandarin, hence the note above.

thank you much!

i'm looking at most likely being able to have a few months of overlap between houses, so i'm hoping to set the new tank up, cycle it, and then start slowly moving over inhabitants. likely clowns and blenny first, then corals as possible, then make a decision about the mandy. i've got my feeders, pod cultures, and other apparatus available, so she will likely be second to last, going with the majority of my established live rock.

the YT i'm absolutely thinking of leaving for last, even setting the 75 up in the basement for some amount of time, while i QT and introduce the other inhabitants like the trigger, foxface, and maybe CBB. then when everyone else is in the pool, the YT.

hopefully all that will work out. much appreciate your input.

Still, no problems with fish. I am not sure about lighting for the clam, however.

To start with I will be running a 4 bulb t5ho fixture, but I may try something different, depending on how that turns out, I've used LED on my nano.

In the clam forum there is lighting requirements for the different clam species. Just FYI.

hi snorvich,

tank is six feet long, 24 inches deep, fairy wrasse will probably be some form of scott's fairy wrasse, i'll drop to one firefish, and the copper band won't be for months until i see if everything is working alright. will the four tangs work with a tank that long?

In my opinion, no. I would suggest an 8 foot tank for four. C. scottorum is one of the more aggressive fairy wrasses.

Steve,
Tank is 210 g 6'x2'x2.5'high. shallow sand bed, plenty of rock? with corals (softies, sps, and lps) 40 gallon sump, radion LED lighting.
current fish:
scat
pajama cardinal x2
bicolor angel
flame back angel

Potential future fish:
flasher wrasses (how many would be acceptable?)
possible list:
McCosker's Flasher Wrasse
Eightline Flasher Wrasse
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse Terminal Phase Male
Blue Flasher Wrasse Terminal Phase Male
Royal Flasher Wrasse Terminal Phase Male
Linespot Flasher Wrasse Terminal Phase Male

Blue hippo tang
Achilles tang
mandarin goby
copperband butterfly

thanks in advance,
John

possible list:
McCosker's Flasher Wrasse
Eightline Flasher Wrasse I would avoid this one, but all the others are wonderful.
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse Terminal Phase Male
Blue Flasher Wrasse Terminal Phase Male
Royal Flasher Wrasse Terminal Phase Male
Linespot Flasher Wrasse Terminal Phase Male

Blue hippo tang I would avoid this fish as it grows large and needs a long tank
Achilles tang
mandarin goby after 9 months maturity
copperband butterfly African endemic preferred

thanks in advance,
John
