Hello, in the process of setting up my first reef tank. 75g with 20g sump, no fuge. About 70 lbs brs reef saver rock currently in the cooking process, shallow course sand bed. Planning on softies, mushrooms, and zoas.
Here is the stocking list I am thinking of:
- occellaris clown pair
- bicolor blenny
- kole tang
- possibly one other small fish, maybe a firefish
- cuc of some snails, skunk cleaner shrimp, and emerald crab.
Not really sure on the stocking order, thanks for any input.

Kole tang last, firefish first. Plan is fine.

[welcome]

Hey Steve, I currently have a 40b reeef tank. In the process of assembling a 6' 125 that I think will end up as a FOWLR. I am starting initial planning on my stock list for the 125. So I am going to start with my most wanted fish and go from there:

One each of the following:
yellow tang
powder blue tang
bursa trigger
copperband butterfly
flame angel

Any issues so far?

TIA

Mike

You are unlikely to sustain two tangs in that sized tank especially with another algae grazer; copperband butterfly fish need gentle tank mates and you have three that are not gentle. I normally do not provide analysis of aggressive fish community tanks as they are far less predictable than those centered around reef fish

Hello.

I'm new to the forum. Looking to start up a 75 gallon FOWLR.
I plan to start very slowly (esp as we may be moving houses over the next year).
My current short list of fish to start with is:

true percula Clown
firefish
royal gamma/bicolor dottyback (maybe both?)
green banded goby

1 Fire Shrimp

Down the road I wouldn't mind adding a Mandarin once I feel everything else is well established.

Any concerns with this list?
Would going without a sump be feasible with this list?

Thank you!

Steve, thanks. I am still learning and that is why I seek your guidance here. After doing a little more reading I see that the trigger is a bad idea. Is removing the trigger enough for the needs of the CBB? Or is the semi-aggressive nature of the tangs and flame angel to much for the CBB?

Thank you!

Fine except as annotated

Much better. However the two tangs may be a bit much for the CBB. In any case, the CBB would have to be introduced and established first.

Fish list

Fish list

Have a 75g display with a custom 40g breeder sump. Approximately 90 pounds of live rock. T5 lighting. Tank has been up and running for about 18 months.
stocking list:
Already have:
Snowflake clown
Blacker Ice clown
2 green chromis
McCoskers flasher wrasse
Yellow coris wrasse
Solarensis wrasse
Green Mandarin
Scooter Blenny
Candy Cane pistol shrimp
Harlequin shrimp
Going to add a yellow eye Kole tang.
What problems might I have in the future?

I am not sure how many fish to plan for with the size tank we are planning. I know there is a lot listed below. It was the first go at making a list of beginner fish that I am interested in. I definitely plan to narrow it down. This is where I am hoping for some help. I am new to this hobby and a planner with patience, so I want to do my homework long before fish, inverts, and corals are bought. I currently have no materials or equipment. Thank you in advance!

65 Gallon 36 x 18 x 24 with Live Rock - We will probably look at some soft corals and maybe LPS eventually as well
20 Gallon sump without Refugium
10 Gallon QT

Must have fish:
2x Ocellaris or Percula Clownfish - My wife really likes Gold Striped Maroon, but are those too aggressive for this size tank?
Bubbletip Anemone
1 Hoeven's Wrasse (Halichoeres melanurus) at least 6 months after cycle completes

Other fish:
To consider in any reasonable combinations - doesn't have to be all; just trying to look at what would fit with those we really want above.
3 x Green Chromis (Chromis viridis)
1 of either Coral Beauty Angel or Flame Angel - add much later in the game
1 or more Neon Goby (Elacatinus oceanops)
Orange spot Diamond Goby (Valencienna puellaris) for filtering sand
Longnose Hawkfish (Oxycirrhites typus)
Neon Dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani)
Lawnmower (Salarias fasciatus) or Tailspot Blenny (Ecsenius stigmatura) for Algae

Inverts / Cleaning Crew:
Snails - What kind do you think? Trochus, Astrea, Nassarius, Turbo Grazer?
Hermit crabs - Mostly Scarlet Reef and maybe 1 electric Blue
Lettuce Nudibranchs
Sand sifting starfish
Cleaner Shrimp

Already have:
Snowflake clown
Blacker Ice clown
2 green chromis are likely to become only one
McCoskers flasher wrasse
Yellow coris wrasse
Solarensis wrasse
Green Mandarin a mandarin and scooter blenny will be difficult long term in this sized tank
Scooter Blenny
Candy Cane pistol shrimp
Harlequin shrimp only eats starfish
Going to add a yellow eye Kole tang.

An excellent and very prudent idea!

Lawnmower (Salarias fasciatus) or Tailspot Blenny (Ecsenius stigmatura) for Algae

Inverts / Cleaning Crew:
Snails - What kind do you think? Trochus, Astrea, Nassarius, Turbo Grazer?
Hermit crabs - Mostly Scarlet Reef and maybe 1 electric Blue I suggest snails or hermits but not both
Lettuce Nudibranchs will starve after eating all the algae
Sand sifting starfish will starve after depleting the sand bed of beneficial organisms
Cleaner Shrimp

It's Week 2 of the Great Pirate Adventure. (the pirates work at the LFS, btw) The sandstorm is over, PH, salinity, etc. are good & I'm deciding which fish to subject to my virtually non-existent expertise:

1 diamond watchman goby
3 yellowtail damsels
1 foxface lo
1 sailfin blenny
2 orchid dottyback
4 Pederson shrimp
2 Ocellaris clownfish
1 magnificent anemone

Comments, corrections, deletions?

Looks ok. Damsels will limit tank mates. I have not seen Pederson shrimp for sale with any regularity.

Sir,
While my Gold Striped Maroon is not timid by any means (and by far my favorite fish), could you comment on the aggression expectations, long term, of a single, vs. a pair? I only have one, and do not plan a second in my 75 gallon. Her spot is in an island of Xenia, since I'm not ready to trust myself with the Sunburst Nem I've been considering. She definitely has a territory, but as a single lady, will she grow more aggressive over time? She is currently 3 years old and about 3-4 inches.

She will mature at about 5-7 inches over time; at that point she will be the most aggressive fish in your tank and will want to control about 50 gallons of tank space. A pair will not be worse, however.

Snorvich,

Thank you for the help with my list. Do you have a recommendation for a max number of fish for 65g?

Is there any advantage to snails vs hermits or vice versa?
