Ok I have a 40g breeder no sump hob protein skimmer 40 #s each live/rock sand. Canister filter that I clean every two weeks (nitrates have not been a problem)

I've have 2 O clowns in for two months and a starry blenny, thought he was a lawnmower until recently for one month. Everyone is doing great after removing a bully fish. Long story but all good now. Anyways how many more fish can I get. I want extremely peaceful friendly compatible fish.

I was looking at chromis and yellow clown goby. Do these fish work together? Any other options that you'd recommend? I will eventually upgrade to a 5 ft long 150 gallon tank so anything I get now I want to be ok in that tank. I'm not getting anything that can't work in a 40g breeder though. Upgrading will happen, but won't place fish that don't belong in a 3 ft long until the upgrade.

Thanks for the time.

That should work fine. Be sure to quarantine the chromis as they are highly susceptible to uronema.

Hello Reef Central! I hope I'm posting this in the right place. If not please set me straight and I'll repost.

I've recently bought a complete setup from an experienced reefer who was getting out of the hobby. He is including his livestock. I had a few setbacks during setup and it took MUCH longer than it should have and he is very anxious to get the livestock out of the small tank he put them in to keep them for me. The good news is ammonia dosing (2 ppm) shows cycling is complete and I can add animals. Ordinarily I would do this one at a time and take it slow but he's having trouble keeping them alive and wants to give them to me all at once - take it or leave it. So, I intend to put the Clean Up Crew in next weekend and then take his animals.

Equipment:120 g reef. Deep sand bed (4 - 5 inches) and approx 40% (by volume) pukani rock. 2x 250 watt dimmable LED lights fixtures. 30 g refugium/sump w/ mineral mud, sand, and cheeto in 'fuge. Approx 750 gph through sump. Warner Marine AS 150 skimmer.

Planned livestock:

Cleanup crew to go in this weekend:
- Brittle Star Fish
- Cleaner Shrimp
- Sea Cucumber
- Hermit Crab
(I have not bought these yet so advice on numbers or alternatives gratefully accepted)

Following week from previous owner
- 2 clown fish - mated pair
- 2 King Nasuriss snails
- 1 Tiger Pistol shrimp
- Anemone (not sure what type but it's large)

Corals
- GSP Star Polyps
- Purple Blue Mushrooms
- SPS frag
- Monti frag
- Acan

There may be others but that's what he's told me so far.

Once I re-stabilize, over time I'd like to add:
- Hippo Tang
- Gobies (watchman or sleeper)
- Spot Banded Butterfly
- Christmas Wrasse
- Mandarin (will wait until tank is well established with ample copepods from fuge)
- Hawaiian Feather Dusters

Thoughts and advice welcome!

One other fish I love but not sure if I could have it, a dragonet. I know I would have to buy pods for it but if that's all I'm fine with that.

Are midnight clownfish really aggressive.I just put a yellow clown gobie in with my midnight and they are doing good together.

No. They are a phenotype (think designer clownfish) of a genotype that is one of the least aggressive clownfish. If you are interested, the phenotype of an organism depends on which genes are dominant and on the interaction between genes and environment so it is the outward appearance of an organism, and is the expression of a genotype in the form of traits that can be seen and measured, such as hair or eye color.

- Brittle Star Fish Not green
- Cleaner Shrimp
- Sea Cucumber not at this point
- Hermit Crab snails or hermits but not both
(I have not bought these yet so advice on numbers or alternatives gratefully accepted)

Following week from previous owner
- 2 clown fish - mated pair
- 2 King Nasuriss snails
- 1 Tiger Pistol shrimp
- Anemone (not sure what type but it's large) needs a mature tank for best results

Corals
- GSP Star Polyps
- Purple Blue Mushrooms
- SPS frag
- Monti frag
- Acan

There may be others but that's what he's told me so far.

Once I re-stabilize, over time I'd like to add:
- Hippo Tang needs a much larger tank
- Gobies (watchman or sleeper) watchman is fine; a sleeper will create sand storms, deplete the sand bed and then starve
- Spot Banded Butterfly
- Christmas Wrasse
- Mandarin (will wait until tank is well established with ample copepods from fuge) 9 months maturity
- Hawaiian Feather Dusters

Thoughts and advice welcome!

You would go broke trying to sustain a mandarin in this sized tank. I do not advise it as the fish would likely starve.

Thanks, Steve. I'd really rather host the clowns in hammer or bubble coral but I guess that's their anemone. Still not sure I want it....

Kids really want the Dori fish. How about a Powder Blue Tang or Yellow Tang?

Clownfish associate with what they choose (what is incorrectly called "hosting"; sometimes they kill or damage corals as a consequence

Reef Central's recommended tank sizes for tangs can be found here. Dori (P. hepatus) grows large quickly, is a very active fish, and is very ornery in smaller tanks such as yours.

Stocking ideas over time for my first reef tank a 92 gallon 59X20X22

Carpenter Wrasse and a Lineatus Fairy Wrasse
2 Ocellaris Clownfish
Harptail Blenny
Starcki Damsel
2 Yellow Striped Cardinal Fish
2 Blue Reef Chromis
Tiger Watchman Goby
Bartletts Anthias
Purple Firefish
Kole or Tomini Tang
Possibly a Stripped Dottyback or Orchid Dottyback

Hopefully the wish list isn't too long. Thanks in advance for your time.

Carpenter Wrasse and a Lineatus Fairy Wrasse fine
2 Ocellaris Clownfish fine
Harptail Blenny
Starcki Damsel
2 Yellow Striped Cardinal Fish
2 Blue Reef Chromis will become one over time; also great care should be exercised because they are susceptible to uronema marinum
Tiger Watchman Goby fine
Bartletts Anthias fine
Purple Firefish fine
Kole or Tomini Tang either is fine
Possibly a Stripped Dottyback or Orchid Dottyback I would not with the firefish; even P. fridmani is moderately aggressive although it is the least so of the pseudochromis

A bit on the heavy side for your sized tank

Hopefully the wish list isn't too long. Thanks in advance for your time.

80 DT. Mature tank. Ricardia, chalice, leather, mushrooms, gorgs.

Pair of clowns
Yellow tang ****needs a larger tank
Melanurus wrasse
Lawnmower blenny
Royal gramma
Peppermint shrimp
Cleaning crew

****As those who follow this thread know, I do not provide recommendations for a variety of reasons. However I am always happy to analyze any stocking plan provided tank space is also provided.

Alright Steve, I donated the tang to Birch Aquarium. They'll be putting it in their 900G. Couldn't imagine a better outcome for that guy.

Same stock list as before, but a new wish list as follows:

Kole tang
Midas blenny
Yellow coris wrasse

Thoughts/ideas appreciated. Thank you.

Fine except I do not think you can keep two blennies in that sized tank.
