Hello im extremley new to the hobby and already i can tell im adicted. I have a very small tank but plan on moving up within the next few months. In my 20 gallon i only have one clownfish. Id like to add one other little guy just not sure what. If anyone can help me out it would be appreciated. Thanks much.

This particular thread is answered by Reef Central Staff, in this case, me. While we do not normally provide recommendations (we do provide commentary on compatibility), you might look at a firefish.

What goes with?

What goes with?

30 Gal. Got 2 damsels,(1 leaving this weekend, too aggressive) 1 clown, 5 turbos, 5 hermits, 2 polyps. Want to add more fish. I know how limited I am with the tank size. What do you think I should get next? I want more coral, but will post on the other thread. 7 weeks in.

We will be happy to evaluate your choices but we do not really give recommendations. I suspect both damsels will have to leave if you want to add reasonable fish.

Hi Steve

Back again & would like your thoughts on following (although some might be better in another section?)

Have 50g with lr setup around 5weeks now. Have the following:

Ocellaris Clown
Firefish
Royal Gramma -you had suggested replacing with possum wrasse but my LFS said he rarely gets them in & the Royal Gramma is gorgeous. So far he is behaving :)
2 cleaner shrimp
mixture of nassarius, turbo, cerith snails
5 blue dwarf hermits

Wishlist was:
Bicolor blenny
Flame angel
Yellowtail Damsel - Again you had warned of danger, but if I add it last is there a chance of success. Is one of my favourites :)

1. Is there any issues swapping bicolor for an algae blenny?
2. How established does tank need to be before adding algae blenny & flame angel. I keep reading they do better in 'established setups', but when exactly does a setup become 'established'?
This 2nd question might be the bit for another forum

As always, thanks for your help.

John

I always hate to give a green light on Damsels as they end up being problems. The other two fish should get along fine.

1. Is there any issues swapping bicolor for an algae blenny?

should be fine

2. How established does tank need to be before adding algae blenny & flame angel. I keep reading they do better in 'established setups', but when exactly does a setup become 'established'?

I personally feel the boundary is about six months but this is very subjective. My advice is always a bit on the conservative side.

This 2nd question might be the bit for another forum

My pleasure.

Hi guys - 120 gal standard, SPS/LPS reef, 120 lbs LR, 40 gal sump with cone skimmer/bio-pellets, refugium, carbon/GFO, ~9000 gph flow (75x/hr), screen top

Proposed stock list:

1 Bristletooth Tang
2 Banggai Cardinalfish (pair)
2 Percula Clownfish (pair)
2 Bicolor Dottybacks (pair)
4 Dispar Anthias (1M, 3F)
1 Flame Angelfish (added last)
1 Copperband Butterflyfish
1 Watchman Goby OR 1 Stellate Dragonet

This tank will be continuously fed throughout the day a variety of frozen/live foods via a dosing pump. I'm hoping this will keep the anthias fat and happy and prevent the Flame angel from nipping at corals/clams.

Any advice/suggestions appreciated. Thanks for your help guys you really do a great service to the reefing community.

2 Percula Clownfish (pair)
2 Bicolor Dottybacks (pair) I am not sure these would work, very aggressive single, I doubt you can get a M+F pair
4 Dispar Anthias (1M, 3F)
1 Flame Angelfish (added last)
1 Copperband Butterflyfish
1 Watchman Goby OR 1 Stellate Dragonet

Otherwise, sounds good

I have tried 1 CBB but did not have any success......heard these have a low survival rate.....I currently have a yellow tang, two paired false Percs, yellow clown goby, cleaner shrimp, and blood shrimp.....should I try again??? Beauty fish!! I am currently acclimating blue green chromis and blue streak cardinals into my tank....

I'll be sure to get a mated pair of the cardinals - I want to breed them.

Would 2 Royal Gramma Basslets be okay to replace the 2 Bicolor Dottybacks?

Ok so I'm a long way away from getting my tank setup but I wanted to check with here about my fish purchases.

This is my tank:
  • 90G with 30G sump(15G actual water, 5-7g fuge)
  • AquaC EV120
  • 2x MP10 ESw
  • 100lbs LR in tank +~5lbs for in sump
  • Waterblaster 1800gph return pump (manifold with: biopellet reactor, UV, Carbon & GFO reactor, 4x return lines, excess relief valve)

These are the fish I would like to have in the tank:

  • Firefish x2
  • Ocellaris Clownfish x2
  • Neon Goby (tank bred) x2
  • Yellow Tang (Tank raised) x1
  • Green Chrimis x3
  • Dimond Watchman Goby x1

Hello guys i dont really know what fish goes with what currently i have 4 large LR's in my DT nad 3 more at my Sump but i chopped them into smaller pieces my DT is 18 gal and my Sump is close to 9 gal can someone suggest a good fish that goes with clowns thank you very much

CBB are gorgeous but, many never eat. Best chance is with live black worms and clams on the half shell.

In a small tank, two royal gramma (Gramma loretto) most likely will not work. In this hobby, pairs are difficult as they occupy the same ecological niche.

  • Green Chrimis x3 Most likely will winnow down to just one
  • Dimond Watchman Goby x1

A pair of clowns is a lot in your sized tank. You might consider a shrimp/goby pair, however.

I'm building a 40 breeder and I would like to have schooling/shoaling fish. I kind of like chromis, but I'd like something a little nicer along with not burning a hole in my pocket. I have already spent more than I would have liked to on this system. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for any help,
Jarred

@snorvich
Where can I get live black worms in my area? I live in ontario, Canada.....

I don't know. Many LFS carry them. Here in the states, I order from Eastern Aquatics, but I am doubtful they will be able to ship over the border.
