I'm building a 40 breeder and I would like to have schooling/shoaling fish. I kind of like chromis, but I'd like something a little nicer along with not burning a hole in my pocket. I have already spent more than I would have liked to on this system. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for any help,
Jarred

Only RC staff answers this thread, in this case, me. You will not be able to get schooling/shoaling fish in your sized tank. Chromis will reduce their number to one over time.

Would it be possible to keep 3 or 4 fire fish in this tank?

Short answer is no. In the short run, keeping multiple firefish may work, but after they establish themselves, you only get two if and only if they are a bonded pair.

This is my tank:
90G with 30G sump(15G actual water, 5-7g fuge)
AquaC EV120
2x MP10 ESw
100lbs LR in tank +~5lbs for in sump
Waterblaster 1800gph return pump (manifold with: biopellet reactor, UV, Carbon & GFO reactor, 4x return lines, excess relief valve)

These are the fish I would like to have in the tank:
Firefish x2 Must be a mated pair or they will be only one; firefish should be introduced first
Ocellaris Clownfish x2
Neon Goby (tank bred) x2 I think these have to be a pair in a small tank
Yellow Tang (Tank raised) x1
Green Chrimis x3 Most likely will winnow down to just one
Dimond Watchman Goby x1

Thank you for the info. I didn't know that firefish were that aggressive toward one another. Why do you say that neon gobies should be in a small tank?

I was probably unclear. To have two neon gobies in a small tank, they must be paired (M+F) In a large tank, there is enough room for two even if not paired. Sorry for any confusion. :(

I have a pair of saddleback clowns and was thinking about getting a maroon clown is that bad? I have read that they are agressive

Normally, you can only have one type of clownfish in a tank that is of moderate size. A maroon clownfish is exceptionally aggressive especially towards other clownfish

Just to reinforce -- I have kept both of those clowns, if this was attempted, I see at least one dead clown being the outcome.

Future stocking

Future stocking

Looking for advice on my future stocking plans.

Tank specs:
56gal Fowler with approx 50lbs of rock and 40lbs of special grade sand.
20gal sump with 15-20lbs of rock and cheto.

Equipment: Rio 2100, 2 Koralia 550, 2 Jager 125w heaters. At this time no skimmer.

Water: SG 1.025, Temp 78, PH 8, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 0, Phosphate 0. At this time all I test for.

Current stocking:
2 Ocellaris clowns
1 Banded coral shrimp
1 Emerald crab
2 Mexican turbo snails
1 Margarita snail

What I would like to add (1 item every 4 to 8 weeks).
1 Diamond Goby or something similar
1 Firefish
1 Flasher or Fairy Wrasse
1 Dwarf angle ( Bicolor, Flame or Coral ) for my last fish
1 Fire Shrimp or Skunk cleaner

This would make a total of 6 fish plus the inverts. Would this be OK or to much for my setup?

Thanks for your input and any changes or recomendations you may make

Jack

1 Banded coral shrimp They can take fish
1 Emerald crab Likewise
2 Mexican turbo snails
1 Margarita snail

What I would like to add (1 item every 4 to 8 weeks).
1 Diamond Goby or something similar
1 Firefish should be introduced as early as feasible to establish territory
1 Flasher or Fairy Wrasse flasher wrasses should be introduced AFTER firefish
1 Dwarf angle ( Bicolor, Flame or Coral ) for my last fish flames are gorgeous but not meaty LPS safe
1 Fire Shrimp or Skunk cleaner

This would make a total of 6 fish plus the inverts. Would this be OK or to much for my setup? I think your bioload is fine. Firefish, wrasses both require a top as they are prolific jumpers. 1/4 inch holes not egg crate

Thanks for your input and any changes or recomendations you may make

And I hope there were no storms in your area

Can anyone ID this Wrasse I bought?

Can anyone ID this Wrasse I bought?

Hello All. I am new to saltwater. I have a 75 G beginner reef setup. I bought this little guy as an addition to my "not so crowded" community, however my "go to" fish-guy, the 75 year old very experienced store owner in Lake Geneva, has no idea what he was selling me. I bought it because it is small and cute, and I have a fish-sucking coepod in my tank somewhere that needs to die. He's fighting with my six-line however. What do I have here?View attachment 180434

Sorry, wrong thread. RC staff answers this thread and my vision (until I get my second eye done, cataract surgery) is not sufficient to tell from the picture. Try this post in the reef fish thread. However, it should be no surprise that a six line wrasse would not like this fish being added.

Still tossing around stocking ideas...

40g long sumpless
2 x 425gph power heads
SWC Mini Hot skimmer
Live rock, shallow sand bed, AC70 hob filter for carbon etc
The tank will get corals as I learn more, though not the ones requiring the most light. Fish will get priority over corals at least to start.
Tank currently sitting here with the painted background halfway done...

Fish list:
1 tank bred black and white Occellaris clown juvie
1 tank bred occellaris clown juvie
1 yellow watchman goby
2 neon gobies
1 or 2 tank bred Springeri dottyback
1 potters angel, or cherub pygmy or flame angel (can't decide!) - i know they can have issues with corals
any room for a tank bred mandarin a long way down the road?
optional: 1 sailfin blenny

Inverts:
all snails no crabs (not including hitchhikers)
1 pistol shrimp
1 peppermint shrimp
1-2 cleaner shrimp

Thanks

1 yellow watchman goby
2 neon gobies Unless they are a mated pair, they will fight.
1 or 2 tank bred Springeri dottyback For sure two will not work, but these are pretty aggressive fish
1 potters angel, or cherub pygmy or flame angel (can't decide!)

One of these will work but are not going to be coral safe

ORA mandarins have mixed results. Those who make them work spot feed them multiple times per day, assuming, that is, that you get one that will eat.
