PO'd about Zoas

I was just trying to do some online digging reaching way back to when I set up my first tank. Back then I used to participate on a different forum that's all but dead now, but there used to be a photographer out of TX that specialized in Zoa/Paly photography. His old site is down and so are his pictures, but I used to be mesmerized by the variety and beauty of his zoa collection.

Thanks MUCHO!
After this collection of info they'll get trapped only if they want to.

Hey I agree with you completely. I wish you could see the emails I am getting now and have received over the years, in the hundreds. Many people just never knew the truth and have now refused to buy at these prices and sizes. They now see just how unimportant names are. I simply ask them to tell everyone they know so the word continues to spread. The key now is just making sure as many people as possible can see and read this thread and most importantly all of the links to support everything that everyone here has said.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Well, my friend, I don't get any emails. Never. LOL!!! I do get PMs here and there, but only about diseases, problems with their systems and so on. Some times they tell me about something that's going on too...
Thanks for telling me about the reactions with the emails. That changes my vision to a better and more promising future in regards to the subject. I just don't understand why more people wouldn't join in and help others to understand all this. That's one of the reasons sometimes I get tired of participating in these type of threads. But because it's so disgusting what some of them do with the "name game", I just can't help and give my time here.

It would be great if someone could place this as a "sticky" on the zoa forum!!!

I don't know how much they appreciate what's in here, but I think it could turn things around really well in a corse of months.

Thanks again MUCHO!!

Merry Christmas!!!

As a hobbyist, it's nice to "collect" and add to your stock. Part of the fun is being able to keep some of the rare hard to keep zoas. Trading frags for other zoas you don't have is 90% of the fun! As far as pricing, it's out of hand but the harder to keep zoas should be, well, harder to get...

Hello s_luark and thank you very much for sharing and I agree with you sir, it is out of hand now. It's good to hear every opinion, for or against.

I have always wanted to do this but always knew someone would say I was being arrogant if I did. Well, I am in no way being arrogant or condescending in any way form or fashion. I'm asking if you or anyone here reading this thread would please post a picture of a rare zoanthid or palythoa that they own, then tell us why it is rare as well as a picture of the "harder to keep zoas" ?

Thank you again for sharing and I hope others will chime in with a response.

Merry Christmas.

This was supposed to be a WYSIWYG frag, but just got a pyramid of three with Bernie Madoff's face.

I think more people ( newbies ) than we think really do appreciate this thread and have finally said no and have refused to believe the lies, the hype, false claims and are no longer paying $ 5 to hundreds of dollars for a single polyp, which are only worth a buck or two a piece, which came out of the ocean as a mother colony with hundreds of polyps on it. Only to frag off a single polyp, then glue it to a round or square white plug, ( totally unnatural looking ), then promoting it with a made up name or a person's name, telling you it's LE, Rare, ultra, grade A or just released or discovered. But remember, it came off of a colony, so how is it rare. Some of these price gougers have only been in the hobby a few years and have never been near a reef. Please read paragragh # 7 in the link below by Mr. Anthony Calfo whom I highly respect. It states, .....

Is “idiocy” really an appropriate description for the bandwagon jumpers? Of course not. I’m using the word to make an exaggerated and superlative statement. But nor will I tolerate the same bandwagon jumpers, or anyone on the fence, hiding under a blanket defense of “market law” to justify the ridiculous prices that some of these animals are being pitched for as of late. Do you really think for a moment that the island collectors, who earn mere dollars per day or pennies per piece for other pretty, but “common,” corals, get rewarded with tens or hundreds of dollars for finding the trendy coral of the week? Please - give me a break… No! If that were the case, the only thing on importers lists and in retailers displays would be that sole coral of the week or month. Message-board bandwagon jumpers create a fallacious environment with their hype, which ignorant (as in “not-knowing”) and/or impressionable aquarists then accept as the real state of the hobby. This is hardly the case at large, yet the outspoken minority would have you cover your eyes with one hand and stick out your wallet with the other to belong to the “popular” coral club. It’s funny to me that such traders and sellers so freely label some animals as “ultra” this, and “rare” that without ever having been to a reef, worked as a transhipper or importer, or having any real qualifications otherwise for making such statements. Worse still are those scumbags taking pale, stressed and or bleached cnidarians and offering them as “rare” pink, yellow or white specimens. It’s profoundly ironic to pay a premium price to an unworthy seller for an inferior specimen.

It's all there.

Thank you to RC for the many great articles they've posted which have helped so many of us over the years and for allowing this thread to continue. Thank you all.

Hope they won't say that he's too old...
Truth spoken!

You keep mentioning too old, you mentioned it in a few other post, where is that coming from? I don't get it. :)

ALSO......

BTW, I'm still asking if anyone here reading this thread would please post a picture of a rare zoanthid or palythoa that they own, then tell us why it is rare as well as a picture of the "harder to keep zoas" ?

Thank you.

well ive read this and agree with most. i like to keep the corals i find attractive, some are pricey , some not. however i like to sell, and trade them as they grow out, ussualy for half or less then what i payed(and give alot away) , to acquire something new. so with that said i believe that some very expensive corals end up being cheaper even after me, example (sorry sps) the red dragon acro is a fast grower, for me and a few others, so it will become much cheaper over time in my area. so dose this put me in the category of gouging? or am i helping drop the price? i am far from a rich man, but when i do sell a few, i buy a new that tickles my fancy:) and i love having the names, what angers me is when some one makes one up, or calls what they have something else for sale.

and reefkeeping is fun, and always will be:) and to get something ive been waiting a long time for brings a smile to my face:)

also, as far as the unnatural polyp on a tile, i usually only buy one or two for the clean factor. east to inspect for bad critters and you can tell if its been grown or hacked for profit. not fond of coral choppers.

You should know, man!!
They think you're very old too!!!
:D LOL!!! I'm not alone!!

Those guys are just crazy!
I still LOL so much when I remember.
It's a good thing to be remembered like that for such a very important cause.
I do hope that cartoon advertisement somehow would make people come to the truth side of the story.

because of the name games in the US, collectors in Indo dont just charge higher on more colorful z's, they will sell single good looking one only if you buy the serveral other crappy lookings. This is why many online retailers get so many international order enquiry.
I am one of the asian having hard time collecting. We wont pay that much for a single polyp here, and we wont be seeing LFS importing them.

So many tears... I can almost do a water change. I wish mods would close down belly aching threads.

Hello and thank you for your reply. I see a very civil discussion in a discussion forum of which you've read, and why would they close it? Whenever it comes up, someone says that, what are you afraid of my friend?

"This is a discussion forum and this is but one of many topics which reefers like to discuss. Whenever it comes up, many want to create heat in hopes of getting it locked. Again, this is a very civil discussion. One can either read it and leave a comment, read it and leave no comment or if one is tired of seeing it or offended, then it might be best not to even click on the thread and just look away. I do it everyday if and when I feel as you do my friend. Either way, please allow us to discuss this topic without being censored by those who don't agree. As is the case with every thread, they are opinions and facts based on those who care about this subject and have been here to watch it transpire. "

I agree A.G, I'm glad also.

A.G., who is they and those guys?

ok here's a perfect example. There is a vendor on another site that has a listing on ebay with 3 different pic with 3 different names and one of them is suppose to be rare.Yet it was the same kind of corals that i p/u for $20 for 19 heads. Here's a pic of it.These corals has been on the market for a years now. These go for between $10-15 a heads.not the best pic but you get the idea.

I really thought you knew.
Same person who told me about them said he sent a message to you back then.
I don't think it's appropriate to post here, because the link is in another forum and it wouldn't work anyway.
They made a funny cartoon about us like two very old man on their computers talking about zoa pricing and so on.
We're getting famous!! LOL!!
I couldn't find a link to PM it to you.
Try to search on "reef two reef" for "UDDERLY RIDICULOUS Utter Chaos $100 Packs".
I promise that I'm not THAT old!!
Good cause! Have fun!!
