Dino's and green film algae are two totally different things. ;) Dino's are much harder to get rid of while green film algae is not much of an issue.

With added bacteria you should see a decrease in film algae and all other algae as well. In genereal, your water will be much clearer and cleaner.

I had my good friend over yesterday and him and his wife remarked that it looked as if there was no water in the tank. Sometimes it looks as if my fish are floating in mid air! :D He may be adding bacteria soon. ;)

As for getting rid of Dino's, check out my article here: http://www.rimlessreef.com/1/post/2009/04/dinoflagellates-and-the-treament-of.html

Sonny.

That was me! Those fish have wings, not fins :) His water is as clear as it looks in the pics. Beautifull...

Toying with the idea to just to help keep thin green off the glass. Right now I have to run my magnet across every other day. My P04 goes from 0 to .01 and N03 hangs out at about 3. I run the GFO, carbon, macro and ozone....think a small dose of bac here and there may help with that?

Great thread Sunny. Thanks for taking the time to field all the questions.

JIM! :D So glad you could join us!

Yeah, the bacteria couldn't hurt. Your system is already perfect so I dont know how it would help. :p

For those of you who have never seen Jim's system, take it from me it is about the best looking setup around. His corals are unbelievably healthy, colorful, and all around great. I still cant figure out how he gets such amazing polyp extension.

I would say that at least half of my SPS are from Jim's tank. Awesome!

I have to agree with Sonny here! I was able to shoot a few pics of Jim's tank a few months ago, I am sure it only looks better now!

Nice! Yeah, his stuff has grown out much more since then. I would say at least the corals are at least 30% bigger now then in the pics.

This one looks great:

Thanks for the kind words you guys.

Time to pick your brains again.

I'm thinking of following both of you guys over to the dark side of T-5's. I may put em over my FT for a test run.

Any thoughts on the difference between ATI's Powermodule and Sunpower fixtures? Any other types as a matter of fact. You 2 are the T-5/SPS go to guys. I've been really busy of late so I havn't had the time to do too much reading. Your input would be fantastic.

Boy Jim, I don't think I would call myself a go to guy by anymeans! But thanks. As for the fixtures, according to everything I have read, the Power Module is good for 10-20% more PAR then the Sun Power, but that doesn't make the Sun Power any slouch.

If I were making a choice for a trial, on a frag tank, it would be Sun Power. For bulbs, I would do 50/50 ATI Blue + and Aquablue Special. This combo would be very similar to the Radiums you have now.

Have you seen this one? Its supposed to be ready later this year, hopefully with more LEDs.

Sunny, can you buy it and let us know how it looks? :D

+1

Go with the Sunpower 4 or 6 bulb, and the combo of bulbs that Poseiden has listed above.

For your main display an 8-10 bulb T5 Powermodule would be awesome! ;)

Honestly I doubt anyone *needs* the powermodule. I took the sunpower because the PM I wanted wasn't in stock. Still a kick arse fixture. Completely silent, too.

I just picked up a bottle of the Brightwell Aquatics Lugols and Coral Amino. What dosage do you suggest of each for better growth/color. I already dose vodka also. My actual water volume is right at 150 gallons.

Are you also dosing Microbacter7 or another form of bacteria?

I have a similar system volume and dose 5 drops a week of Lugols and about 10 drops a every other day of Coral amino.

Watch you tank closely for any sign of excess nutrients(diatoms on sandbed, glass, etc) If diatoms start to rapidly appear then you will need to cut your dosage of Coral amino in half and then dose accordingly.

From my readings, diatoms are not nutritional by more the cause of silicates. Would you happen to have any reports that would help clear this up for me.

Thanks :)

The coral amino must have had some silicates then because on my first time dosing them the following day I had a bad outbreak of diatoms on my sandbed. I stopped dosing for a couple days and then slowly started back up at half the dose. It could very well have been Dino's and not diatoms as sometimes t can be hard to tell them apart in the early stages.

After a week the sand was nice and white again. :D

Thanks Sunny. Silicates are tricky element in an SPS tank especially since ALL salt mixes contain silica's; just in different quantities. I've had my PO4 extra low per Hanna and still fight the diatoms during seasonal weather changes for some reason.

BTW, you are going to have to change your avatar ;)

Have you tried a polyfilter or Purigen by Seachem? These should help absorb some of the silicates and then you can see if they are the limiting factor.

There are so many things that go on in our tanks. Problems sometimes disappear as fast as they appeared. :)

Yep, I run a polyfilter about every 6 weeks or so just to make sure about metals and such and I've ran purigen in the past and at one point, it seemed to make it worst.

Isn't that the truth! Sometimes things get worse while trying to resolve the problem. While other times it will go away on its own without changing anything. Who knew?!

Oh wow, pretty tricky problem. I wonder where the silicates could be coming from.....

How about Gerrard for your new avatar :D

Gerrard is cool, but I still prefer Kaka. I just need a shot of him in his new uniform. I have a few Zidane avatars i could use. ;)
