Tell me your favorite old classic sps

Amazing stories guys ...

There must be a quite a few with big colony of purple monster and Oregon tort .
If so , please share pics for us to enjoy

Abhishek

When I did a search to see what the sapphire millepora was the search brought up an article about 3 corals that are in danger of becoming extinct. Purple monster, Oregon tort and sapphire millepora were the three. Seems people aren't growing them out and fragging them due to slow growth and they are sensitive to any change in water parameters. According to the article anyway.

Well that might explain why you can't find a purple monster and a sapphire Millie any more .
Thought Oregon Tort was not that rare though .
Surely slow growers but worth the wait

Abhishek

Real Garf Bonsai
Purple Monster
ATL Christmas Miribilis - like red planet but keeps the green for those of us who have red planets go all red
Palmers Blue Mille
Lime in the Sky

To my newbie to SPS eyes, wouldn't the ORA Stubber Staghorn, Mylka Stylo, Purple Monster and maybe the Red Monti Cap be the some of the ultimate Classic SPS? I mean the Stubber is one of the earliest Acros kept in captivity! And the history of the Mylka with the Monaco Aquarium is fascinating.

Not necessarily my favorites, but their histories within the the hobby are very interesting.

Now I 'd be pretty happy with a Red Planet, Red monti Cap, any milliepora and any blue staghorn(i like The blue Vermiculata) or Blue Tort if the were the only SPS

By the way there is a company selling the Purple monster and something similar too, the even had some acro with the Saphire name this past few days but I can't remember if it was a millie or not, but I'm not sure if I can say it without getting banned:lmao:

There was a coral close to a PM that came from the Soloman Islands a year or so ago. I think that Jake Adams brought it back. I have seen it as Soloman Purple Monster. I have both and they are different - it is easy to tell when they are in the same tank. The true PM gets darker and has white polyps. The Soloman one has more purple polyps, but a very similar growth pattern. If you want a true PM, then the lineage will matter.

They both need very stable parameters and the highest quality light.

Neon Green Hydnophora

noooooooooooooo

I have a huge one that started as a frag and it's taken over a large rock and kills everything in this path - with extreme prejudice...

I can't even break it off since it's both encrusting and branching with a very thick skeleton.

If you get one, create a corner for it to dominate away from other sps.

This is so true . I checked with unique and they have 2 varieties. They claim that the Original Gangster variety is the actual original Purple Monster which is definitely Out of Stock ..

What about Grape Juice ?? No one likes them enough :)

People calling orange monti cap red still makes me chuckle. We all need a color wheel next to our aquariums to reference before describing corals. lol
Laughing and busting chops here. I have actually seen 1 cap that looks red but I am not sure if it is actually red or if it was trick lighting.

Unique coral?

You said it not me:)

Yes, I have neither, but if you ask me, I preffer the Solomon Islands Purple Monster by a huge margin. Less expensive too.

I know what you mean, but I bought the UC red Monti Cap just because they described it as not the typical orange and is true enough red so no need for a color wheel then again I have under exclusively under Sunlight so no trick lighting either and 2,000 PAR will turn anything red!:)

BTW, to clarify it's not a "true" red when compared to a color chart like the poster above said, it straddles the line between red/orange leaning more to the red side and less of an orange. Hence, the true enough comment, don't wish to mislead anyone.

Why can't you edit posts on RC even after few minutes?

Just picked up a frag of 30k lokani! I have a frag of ATL Banana lokani that is doing well and a 10k that is a mini colony.

Love lokanis! Too bad they are on the red list.

Hey, if you are looking for a Purple Monster, keep and eye on Diver's Den. Many of these classics can be found around online, but like you, I had a hard time finding a Purple Monster. Last night I purchased what was called "DFS Original True Purple Monster Acropora Coral" through Divers Den.
