UCSB Santa Barbara NSW Natural Sea Water...

COPS

COPS

I just got back from UCSB. I was trying to fill up my 350 Gallon transport tank when I was abrubtly stopped by a school police. He asked for my identification in which I gave. He asked what I was doing and I told him just filling up some containers with saltwater. I told him it was open to the public. He responded me that it was his first time seeing someone do this and that I would either need to be UCSB students or get permission from a professor. He went on what I'm doing seems to be "legit" but he really didn't know and asked me to leave. I was a tad tired to challange his authority and I manage to get 100 gallons. So... just to make sure, is the seawater access open to the public?

I'm hoping to go there this Monday afternoon to pick up 100g.

Does anyone know where to purchase a parking pass for $2 there? Nobody stopped me in the past while picking up water, but I figure it might "ward off" the warden if he comes by.

Are the graduations over? I hope traffic will be on the lighter side.

This is a great resource to us reefers and deserves respectful use.

Thanks
Doug

Agreed, we don't want to abuse this great resource.

Graduation was last weekend, so the campus should be somewhat quieter, though summer session is starting up.

Not sure where is buy a parking pass around there...never needed one in the past nor had any questioning by campus officials.

goto any parking lot, there is a little machine that you can buy parking passes from. There are usually 1 or 2 per lot. They used to be big square boxes, but now it's a round grey looking machine.

I've had the cops drive by more than once while I was filling up and they never said a thing. I usually go on Friday night or saturday morning as well so there's not a lot of people or traffic around.

The water is free to the public. they just shut down the larger hose as people were getting water and selling it commerically. The sign posted on the wall above the hose also states it's open to the public I do beleive.

Next time, challenge him as he's probably new and dosen't know about it being free. That's part of the probelm with rent-a-cops, they try to enforce rules that they haven't read or something THEY think is wrong when it's not. ;)

i will try to be there early meaning leaving la land by 6am if i can get the wife up that early. she and the beast are coming with me.

i am about to start the tank build thread.

The water at UCSB is good, SPS respond well to it. They use it to grow red abalone.[violation]

i'm going early for my 850 gallons so i won't be leaving early. time to walk on the beach with the wife and dog.

How long can the SW sit in the barrels and still be good? I mean, is it good as long as you stir it with a Powerhead or something first? Obviously saltwater doesn't go bad, but will the salt settle if it just sits there for soo long?

As long as your container is clean, you can probably store it indefinitely...I have stored the UCSB water up to a couple of months. Just keep the storage container sealed to prevent water evaporation and contamination.

i have stored mine for months with no problems. just keep it covered and aerate and adjust temp before use.

i can't make it up for water today. probably on the 4th. today we have several crews to the house. some of the men will be working on the new tank and i need to be here, otherwise i would be on the road now.

i printed out the info about who is in charge of the program up there and i have it in the truck in case i ever have a hassle with security.

thank you Ray!!!

Just got back from filling up 60 gallons. No problems with security down there. Didn't get to see any other reefer's either!

good to hear. i just finished off the last of last trips water so i will head up tomorrow bright and early.

Didn't make it up there my self. Wound up setting up the swimming pool so there went my weekend. Might be up some time this week. I need to do a major water change on both systems.

So Carl, wheres that build thread? :D

I'm most likely going up there this weekend to pick up maybe 300g, or whatever can fit in a ram2500 shortbed. Is there anyplace to go fishing close to there while we wait? How fast is the spigot anyways?
