Want a centerpiece anemone

Wow, so full and gorgeous!
That's alright, someone snaked a killer mag out from me just last weekend, like me I'm sure you'll get over it!:)

Just over 1 week in and I'm pretty happy with this nem. No deflating, moving, or changing shape in any way. Sure, someone snaked the bicinctus clowns out from under me, but I'll find something else :D

Very nice. You guys have it so good on the West coast.

Most of the time in many ways, but as it goes for getting specific nems it can still be challenging.
I searched for quite a while to get a mag, and took my bleached one as it was my only option after 4 months of looking.
Most LFS I called asking about mags, gigs simply told me, "we don't get those because they just die"!lol

In my tank, feeding means getting bigger. If I don't want a larger anemone then no additional feeding. They rarely regress in size unless they got sick.

I agree with this.. I will go farther and say with anemones I feel it is a must to feed them, not to make them grow but they seem far more healthy when fed. I feed all my anemones. I know people have bta's they dont feed and they live a long time.. But are they healthier, can they resist disease better?

To me getting food off zooxanthellae aint healthy.. That is just glucose which is sugar, Would amyone be healthy eating just sugar...

This is best. If we don't prepare to take good care of them, they should stay in the Ocean.

I agree that fish store is right most mags do die.. Not allot of people can keep them.. most the people that see them buy them dont have the knowledge to keep them, there are allot of people who know they cant keep them yet still try. I bet most of them even die before being sold. Probably the anemone with the highest mortality rate of the hosting anemones.

Sometimes I wish there was a better way to make sure the hard to keep stuff ends up in the right hands. Same thing with imports that the livestock ends up in the right retail places that can keep them till they are sold..

I have a lfs that puts giganteas in there fish only tanks with regular lighting.

I have another store that gets magnificas in all the time and throws all their anemones in the same tank. So you have maxi minis, haddoni, bta all grouped together in the same tank, looks like a anemone soup.

The guy who runs the LFS that I got my mag from is pretty well known around here as being very knowledgeable, and very good at hand picking quality specimens (inverts, fish, etc). So I didn't hesitate to get this nem from him. I've seen some really nice gigs at his shop before too.

I think there was some confusion in my statement that was originally for another poster on another thread, being concerened that his nem was smaller in his display than it was at the LFS, and thinking it was diminishing in health.
My point was a nems body is just basically similar to a solar panel, but able to retract or expand as needed, so size is not the be all end all of determining health, and it's quite common for them to change size depending on light they are receiving.
Taking in food is a secondary means of energy, and they can go a long time w/out being spot fed, much much longer than they can go w/out light.

There is no doubt about it they do that as well as corals do.... They will expand more in lower level lighting or if it is lower than they are used to to gather more light.. They will also contract or make them selves smaller if there is too much light or more than they are used too..

There is a tiny pair of chrysopterus at a LFS that I wanted, but one had clamped fins today, so no go :( Still working on the bicinctus route :)

Here's my Nem. Finally got around to taking pics with my real camera and not my phone. LOL.

Did you get him from AquaSD?
I wish I can see this store in person.

I have been a bit concerned the last couple days. The nem has been slightly shifting it's footing... just a few inches here and there. But doesn't this mean he's getting unhappy in his location, or is this normal?

It may just be adjusting to flow, I would expect some subtle slight moves no matter how well it is placed.
