What will eat mushrooms?

nevermind

Does anyone know a fish or invert that will eat red mushrooms? I got a shroom explosion and I really do not want to break the tank down to scrub all the rocks. I tried injecting them with vinegar but parts of them always survives.

you can try zap-tasia gel, I've had some success. honestly replacing the rocks might be the way to go. You can probably sell the rocks at a premium.

The orange rics to the side look nice!

Had same problem a yr ago
Sold Rock that were covered and shattered rocks with a few and put in sump

IMO keep the mushrooms get rid of the frag racks... Very nice tank!!! I would recommend you get a Harlequin shrimp to get rid of those stars they love to destroy corals. On the mushroom problem I wait for them to extend off the rock and snip them off with Sharp scissors and drop them in a shallow dish filled with small rubble they will attach quickly then glue several to a rock and sell them$$$$
lots of good info on garf.org

I agree with this, toss the racks and that would be a sick sick tank.

Some good recommendations for fragging in here, but I suspect that you're in the same boat as me: you're just tired of them and want to make a change. I don't klnow of anythign that will specifically eat the mushrooms without going after anything else.

I treat mine like aiptasia and use kalk paste. Mushrooms are more hearty than aiptasia, so it takes a while to eradicate them with this method (and you'll always have some coming back). I have one that still keeps popping up at the base of my pink lemonade acro.

You don't want to do too much kalk paste at one time, so this could take a while. For the rocks that are totally covered, I'd cut the losses and try to remove them. Maybe see if a LFS will exchange straight up for new LR.

I was snipping the mushrooms to keep them in check but then I went on vacation for a month and they just grew like crazy. I have a little 10 gallon tank on the side that I toss the clippings into and it is now full of shrooms also. The shrooms are actually okay at the bottom of the tank but now they have encroached on to some of the acros up top and killing them. It looks like there's no way to avoid taking everything out and redoing the whole tank.

The starfishes are okay, had them in the tank for a year or two now. I never see them on the corals unless there is a dead spot and algae started to grow on it.

I want to get rid of the racks but I just had them in there for so long that they sort of became part of the tank. I also have too much stuff on them that I need to mount on the rocks or get rid of. Plus some of the corals have encrusted a great deal on the racks and that just makes me less inclined to break the corals. I'll get to them eventually...

Let me see if I can frag some of the rocks or corals that the shrooms are growing on then you guys can have them.

Looks like you have a green slimer problem too! I second what everyone else has said. Either trade in the rocks to LFS, sell the rocks to a local who wants them, or kill them via kalk or other method.

I had the same problem with shrooms (and other junk). I tore the tank down and gave the rock an acid and bleach bath. I'm setting the rock back up now. I made a decision to not go with regular mushrooms. I'm only going to put in ricordias and other mushrooms that don't go all crazy. Even them, I'm going to isolate them on a rock in the sand to try and keep them at bay. I'm going to be much more selective with my corals this time around.

I hear delinquent teenagers eat a lot of shrooms. I would check your local skate park.

Hahahahahaha

I don't know what else it would have eaten, but I once bought a scribbled rabbitfish who thoroughly enjoyed eating my mushrooms. I also seem to vaguely remember that camel shrimp eat mushrooms. Again, I don't know what else they may eat.

Some fish eat weird stuff. My powder blue tang used to absolutely love Xenia. He demolished a whole forest and ate every little stub that grew from it. He eradicated it form my tank.

I need red shrooms :wavehand:

I love mushrooms in my tank - this variety along with a red and white speckled variety can consume a tank quickly...

not trying to discourage anyone, or step on the OP, just watch what you wish for!

I had some and quickly removed them.

on the other hand I have some Red Yumas which are very nice and grow slowly :)

I wonder if they grow fast enough to create a "shroom scrubber?" A separate tank just filled with mushrooms. Let them grow wild and see if they grew fast enough to bind nutrients at an effective rate. It would be a like a macroalgae refugium but with "waste" you could easily sell...

I'm sure it's just a pipe dream and would prove inefficient but it would be cool if it worked. :D
