who has the biggest gigas clam?

minh, i thought that very large clams should ONLY be held upright or less preferably, on their side because of their musculature.

This was my thinking as well. Whenever I've seen people move large clams it has always been in the upright position. Also It gives me a good excuse to upgrade.

Is there a clam in this pic that I'm missing? :strange:

That pic was from '07 a few months before I got the clam.

Here is a more recent pic

So, I'm cleaning out the top shelf of my bedroom closet the other day and I came across a bunch of slides I took (and had taken) of a diving trip to Palau 12 years ago. One of the slides is a picture of me hovering over a MASSIVE Gigas clam. At the time I figured it was over 4 feet in length. If I can figure out how to digitize the shot I will post it here. It was by far the neatest thing I saw that entire trip (I saw tons of neat stuff too) and began a fascination with keeping clams.

Here are a couple pics of mine. I have had it since early 2007. The shell is probably about 20" end to end. It had a small area of bleaching from running too much ozone, but it is recovering nicely.

Just curious, where can one get a gigas with any reliability? I want one but the one or two I see out there are 300 dollars plus. I may be willing to pay that at some point u=but even then they usually are listed but not in stock at most sites I have looked at.

If they have truly stopped importing these, I don't see the price ever coming down on them. I would buy one if you find it, don't let the price get in the way. Remember the ones in captivity are only going to get bigger and become more scarce further driving up the price even more.

I've only seen one for sale at an LFS in the last 3-4 years, and it was a large one traded in by a customer. As far as I know, there haven't been any imported now for several years. I myself was trying to find a second one, but have not had any luck.

I saw a Gigas in my LFS about 3 years ago that had come in as a Deresa (at least, I think it was a Gigas). Unfortunately I was out of the hobby at that point.

Maybe not the biggest on the thread, but nonetheless... enjoy!

I was really hoping the gigas would shoot like the squamous did. Can you imagine the volume!? Goodbye ceiling tiles!

Since 1992 I have been in one of two positions: having a reef tank or thinking about having a reef tank. Sold off my tanks in a fit of pique in 2007/8 (thereabouts) following a tank crash and then spent the next 5 years with only a FW tank, thinking about (thus visiting LFS) rebuilding a reef! Addictive indeed :)
