who has the biggest gigas clam?

How often do you experience spawning behavior with your Gigas? Last July and August mine would spawn off and on at approx 20min intervals under actinic lighting after the MH turned off. Recently I am starting to notice this behavior again. Has anyone else experienced this, and does anyone keep track of this so we can compare notes?

This video was taken last July

Thanks! I FINALLY was able to capture them both inside at the same time 'posing". I've had that gigas for 6 years. I dont know why you never see them for sale anymore.

I emailed ORA about availability. Here is their response.

Hi - Thank you for inquiring about ORA clams. I'm sorry to tell you we are not currently raising T. gigas at our farm. It will probably be years before we have them again.

It's too bad - they really are great clams.

Thanks,

Laura

Good news is that it will be at least a couple years until I can get a big enough tank.

I think there is some type of restriction on them at this time..perhaps with CITES, but I really do not know.

:( Hurricane Sandy took it away from me..... R.I.P Gigas...

What a shame. Just out of curiosity, what did him in? Extended power failures or actual physical damage? I've just gotten back into a reef tank and am quite concerned about protracted power outages (weve had 4 extended outages here in CT since 2010). Generator my be a necessary piece of equipment.

I had the generator but when I realized I couldn't get anymore gas, I had to run the generator intermittently for the first week. I intentionally lower the tank temperature to prevent large fluctuation but the temp still dipped too low and that just stressed the hell out of it.

I am very sorry to hear this. You have the generator but still cannot save him due to lack of gas.
I also have a generator. I only live in a tiny city, unlike NYC. We are very hurricane prone here but I hope when the big one hit, I won't be out of gas. More likely than not we have to evacuate. If this happen, my tank will be just as dead as your's.
I have a friend in Seabrook Texas. His large tank and extensive and beautiful (and expensive) collection of anemones were wipe out by Ike when it land in Seabrook.
