Would you trade a magnifica and clarkii for onyx?

They call me EC
I have a well established, and healthy red based magnifica, about 10 to 12 inches across. I also have a melanestic clarkii, that I've had forever. She lives alone. I know someone with a very nice pair of sub adult onyx. This may be the best looking pair of captive bred onyx I've ever seen in person. They are from the C-quest line. Would you trade the mag and clarkii for this pair, or hold on to them?

Here's the mag I have.

Tough. Both are hard to come by. However, magnifica are known to fade out the black on some onyx clown. But your magnifica is so nice though. Anyway of keeping the magnifica and still get the onyx you wanted?

BTW, is the base red or purple? The top three pics are red, the bottom is blue. Maybe it just the flash.

Ya. I could simply pay for the onyx. I removed the mag from my display that houses a gigantea and haddoni. The only way I could keep the mag in one spot, is to change massive amounts of water, and run lots of carbon. I simply don't have time to keep up. I've moved it into my fish room, and it hasn't moved. The tanks in my fish room aren't really for show, so I really don't have a need for a mag in there. The clarkii just lives in a 33long sump with some live rock. I've been thinking of getting rid of her for a long time.

There are two different anemones. A red one and a blue one.

pics of the onyx ?:D
but the nem is soo cool

Thanks. I don't have any pic's of the onyx. They are sweet though. I'm very particular about clowns. Especially when it comes to deformities. These clowns look wild caught. Just watching them swim around the tank, I couldn't see any deformities at all. The female has a solid black dorsal, and the male isn't far behind. I'd call them sub adults. With the proper care, they should be spawning in about six months.

I've seen the onyx you are talking about, and they are very, very nice. That is a tough call. Are you gonna put the onyx out in your display? If so that might be the way to go, but if they are gonna hide back in the fish room then that is a toss up.

Sounds like you have already made up for mind to me EC.
How about you ship the magnifica to me and you get your onyx? :D just kidding I barely have any room left.

I don't think I would ever trade for the onyx for such a gorgeous magnifica. I might consider swapping the clown but even then it would be hard. That clownfish looks so happy and looks like she is the queen of that tank. I don't think I could do that to such a happy looking fish.

It's a tough call. I actually took a chance with my Rod's onyx clown with a Magnifica and he continued to color up normally. My Doni's picasso however started to lose a bit of black for a few months but has since darkened back up again with the same Mag. Like most things in this hobby it can be hit or miss.

A small progression.

I'd keep the Mag FWIW... I think they're harder to come by healthy, though I do agree its hard to come by genetically superior clowns these days...

Ya, the onyx would go in my fish room. I already have a pair of pecs in the display. I also have a pair of Picassos, an ancient pair of maroons, and the clarkii in my fish room. Someone would have to go, to make room for the onyx. If I keep the mag, it will be in my fish room too. The main reason I want the onyx is for breeding purposes.

Thanks for all the input, and help. Just talked to the wife, and I think I'm keeping everybody. The plan is to partition off the 33long the clarkii lives in, try pairing her up again, and putting the onyx on the other side. If that works, I should end up with four breeding pairs. I'll leave the mag in the 40 breeder with the Picassos.

Good move............eventually all those clown breeds will be common, but a healthy Mag will always be more special & rare.

Especially if one day they decide to legislate the collection of certain animals............a Mag will be one of the first to be disallowed.

Glad to see you're keeping the mag and clown. They are both so nice and healthy. Sometimes I get tired of taking care of my tanks and daydream about getting rid of them, but then a few weeks pass and my enthusiasm returns. I've had my mags for going on 10 years now, so I think it would feel weird not to have them and I'd probably regret it.

.. Melanistic Clarkii's are one of my favorite fish. I agree with trying to pair them up and keeping them. as they get larger and darker the cooler they look IMO. - not to Hijack but here are some pics of mine. I know the H. Crispa looks rough but I had just put it in the tank. it is unreal now..I will work on updated pics -BTW the trio is now a pair and the odd man out is with a friend....enjoy!:fish1:
