BEAUTIFUL Japanese BB SPS tanks. WOW

Atkins, usually red halogen MH lamps. From other Japanese tanks, they used 50-75w versions. Red as you know doesnt go as deep as blue's. Only meant for shallow waters.

maxpower... they have flow from the top. it says that they try and mimic shallow water by the movement at the top. It also says that there is submersibal pump. Maybe under those corals somewhere.

Hot diggity!

Very nice of you to make it so easy for us to see these all at once. I have been checking these out for some time. Still can't get used to the redness though, but you can't knock the result. The thing is, some of the Japanese tanks that are shown here and there are only a few months old, stocked "Playa-style."

I still wonder how they keep the acrylic so clean.

I would like to see one of these tanks under a fairly common lighting setup here in the states. That being a 10k or 14k with actinics or 20k. Or, at least all the corals receving the same light. Might not make your eyes bug out as far.

Although, it is very pretty.

Something in common is obvious to me in those tanks: lack of many if any fish and no debris and detritus.

Bomber, these are for you! ;) What beauties!

where does their flow come from,
You won't see it unless you look at the surface.

They know that SPS types require Oligotrophic conditions, so they set their systems up to maintain those conditions.

BTW I have corals growing upside down under my rocks that only receive reflected light from the Starboard.

WOW!!! I AM DREULING!! thanks for posting all those pics, do you know what kind of lighting are over the tanks?

Check out this close up from one of the tanks

I love the corals in these tanks, but I'm not a big fan of such a sterile looking tank.

Invincible, thanks for sharing the eye candy. I always look forward to these threads. However, I think this one is my favorite. Until the next one that is.;) I really like the pics of the tank with the angels swimming amongst the stags. So natural looking.

I really like the clean look of the japanese tanks, however I hate how they do their lighting.
Besides the point they are faking, or exaggerating colors... it looks stupid.

I want a nice red acro, but I dont want red rock around it too, or yellow rock etc. I dont agree with the way they do it, but thats just my thoughts. Reminds me of concerte lighting.

Hey. I understand what you mean, but look at how we adjust our actinics to bring out the better colors.

Yea we do... and there are ppl that go to major extremes with that... I dont feel I do.
I was running a 10k/20k mix and I am going to go back to all 10K. If you buy nice, bright, colorful corals to begin with they will look great under 10ks. In fact they will look better than so-so pieces under 20ks. I like my pinks/yellows, which you dont quite get under 10k. I can still get purple, blue, green under 10k.

But what really bugs me about the japanese tanks is how they use yellow, green, red, blue, purple, etc spotlight bulbs to shine on one coral to make it look good. But then when you look at it, you have one piece that is red with red rock below it, but a couple of the branches are blue because it grew under that blue bulb. It just looks stupid in my opinion. Not even the fact that your trying to fake it... but the way you do it doesnt look good.

If I could buy a light to perfectly make that coral look a certain color, and not change the rock color, or branches of other corals around it, Id try it. Do you see my point though?

How do they get good coral growth without growing corralline algae?

I have to say, I didn't like the Japanese look at first. However, last night as I'm going to sleep, I said to myself I must visit that thread again tomorrow. I think it's growing on me (pardon the pun).

Living over here for a few years now I can honestly say that you do not see lighting of this kind very much at all. Certainly in the past it was available, but now the lighting used is mainly DE MH 70,150, 250 or 400W. One company has recently brought out mini 20w MH spots, but these are in blue shades. There are the new plasma and LED lamps, but I have not seen these in use other than on display tanks in shops. They look good, but have a price tag that will take your breath away.

To say it is a Japanese style, is perhaps inaccurate nowadays. Certainly coloured spotlights (other than actinic) are not available at any LFS in the Tokyo area.

Good thread and nice pics anyway.
