Campbell's 120x36x30 In-Wall FOWLR

Looks wonderful chris!I really like the qt system you are setting up.When you plumb the tanks together will you continue to use hob filtration or have something else in mind?

Thanks Kieth! When I plumb them together I will continue to do the HOB as I have always loved them. Also I will have a way to shut down each and run separately in case I need to medicate one and not the other. I have 2 30g tanks that I will more than Kiley run as sumps. I also have an aquacEV240 I will add inline. I will run filter socks off the drains.

Hi Campbell,
Very interested to know how to differentiate the male and female naso tang cos i have a 8 " fish.
Appreciate,
Triggermen.

Wow what a magnificent variety of fish!
I like your qt setup, and I'm curious why you decide to run them together?
If one tank gets a disease wouldn't you then treat all the fish?
Or do you plan on treating all new fish anyway. I treat all my fish with prazipro, and some will copper or hypo all new fish.

I'm debating on doing something similar but had an experience when I put 2 fish in a 55 gallon qt and both got velvet so now I'm thinking about separating new fish if possible.

If I can fit in the tank...well then...

Trigger - the male naso tangs have streamers on their tales that start to grow when the fish is around 7-9". Females do not have any streamers. If you have an 8" naso and no streamers, you have a female.

JJK - thanks very much. As for the QT setup, I will run them together to allow a 30g to be a sump and it will give me more water volume. Plus the maintenance will be less and I will be able to run the entire system off of one pump. Also, I will have a skimmer on the system to handle my bioload. I will have the ability to shut down one or both tanks and continue to have segregated systems if and when I bring in new fish.

I treat all my fish coming in with a mixture of hypo, copper, and prazi. I dont ever take chances with putting fish directly in DT as it has bit me in the past and many many others that I know too often.

Your outbreak of velvet is the main reason that I am keeping the fish segregated now. Once they come in, I analyze them and make sure that they are healthy enough for treatment. If they are eating I begin the treatment...regardless. Having them in QT for 6 weeks without any medications is not proper QT. The gestation period for ich is around 6 weeks and it is longer for others. I mainly use my QT to allow the fish to acclimate to captivity and to allow them to get strong prior to introducing them to the rest of my fish. It gives me time to make sure they will be able to fend for themselves.

WOW your tank is gonna be SWEET! And Those have got to be the nicest QT's I've ever seen fish wise!

Thanks! I enjoy my QTs as it gives me a chance to keep other fish the would not allow me to otherwise keep.

SHHHHHEEEIIIIITTTT!!! I heard that Chris Hanson caught you red handed...

And that "creature" in the tank DOES look just like my mom, save she has more facial hair.

Damn your mom is good looking then...I think I saw her on that new show Fatal Attractions??

what size tanks are you using for the QT tanks?

55g

Chris
I'm one of those who does the prazi and cuppramine treatment together in qt but at what point do you hypo the tank? I read in another forum that lowering the salinity increases the toxicity of copper two fold. Is this correct? thanks

To my knowledge you either use cuppramine, or hypo. Hypo is usually used on fish that are more sensitive to copper. Hopefully Chris can confirm this.

I've heard roomers about some stands of ich being resistant to hypo but I have no proof or experience with this myself.

I'm going to treat all my fish now with hypo/copper and prazi.
Do you have any recommendations for how to treat for internal parasites?
Thanks for all the great information Chris, I'm learning a lot!

Update 4/6/10

I finally completed the sump and refugiums under the tank. I have added all the baffles and am waiting for the silicone to cure for 24 hours then it is time for salt water!!!

Also, I started to build my aquascaping out of 200 pounds of bleached and baked rock. This all used to be live rock, but I wanted to start from scratch. I have another 200lbs sitting in a 100g vat to seed this.

I will post pictures of some of the structures that I have started.

Here is the first part of the dry rock...there is Marshall Islands, Fiji, Tonga, and Hawaiian rock that has been picked...

Big "Playground" built out of some BIG rocks...I can already see the fish swimming in and through this...

My favorite...a bonzai tree structure...this is about 50lbs
