Hello anyone know how I can get a juve christmas island emperor with the orange tail. Is there a guarantee that the fish will have a orange tail?

Not a guarantee, but a better chance. Depending of course on where you purchase the fish from. The Xmas island emperors are not available very often or if they are in not sure where to get them

they are around...but try not to get hung up on the tail color...Michael just had the nicest emp I have seen in a really long time...about 5 inches, full adult coloration, with the most incredible purple and yellow body imaginable...but it didn't have an orange tail...a few of us stood there checking her out while having a discussion about tail color...anyway, sorry, just my .02....I recommend calling Michael at nya and asking him to get you one...he is always willing to track livestock down for us and has terrific connections...best of luck....tk

Mine is just over 5 inches. I love this guy, but if you have zoa's you might want to rethink it.

So i just got an emp ...
Are the Xmas ones really worth paying 6x the price of a generic one ..
I love mine and he looks great to me..
What is the difference ,,an orange tail and maybe a bit more vivid?

+1 on NYA ,,he's becoming my go to place now

I know a few people over the years that have had or have the orange tail. If you don't feed it a variety of foods and the right foods it will lose its orange tail over time. I was lucky enough to have others before me learn this and help me out when I got mine. I sold mine a few years ago as it was not working out.

Brad,
The fish is amazing. I ordered a Xmas island from ibluewater. It is 5 inches and I hope it is as beautiful as yours. What do you feed it? Bob is supplying me with food.

Ibluewater is great. They QT fish for 8 weeks before releasing specimen. His QT consists of for WC fish 8 weeks of jungle lab medicated food for internal parasites, paraguard and formalin. then 15 days of copper at low levels.

Anyone have experience with ibluewater before?

No experience but prices seem very high IMO. Hope you get a beauty!

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I'll pass them on to my emp. LOL
I was skepticle at first adding him to my reef, but he has been very godd after he took care of most of my zoa's. I try to feed him at least 3 times a day. A variety of PEmysis, Hikari mysis, spirulina flakes, emerald entree, and spectrum pellets.
He has grown about an inch in the last six months and is now the boss of the tank. But he only chases my goldflake angel now and then.

Thanks I was on fence about this. Bob from ibluewater kind of convinced me that fish is good to go in DT.

Down deep inside I know better.

Christmas Island Emperors

Was just at the new Elos Aqua Studio here in NJ. This is a premier store. They know what we are looking for. Incredible live stock. Ralph has a couple orange tail emperors in stock. He has a juvenile from christmas island. this fish is transforming into its adult color. The owner says the yellow tail will become orange as fish becomes older.

Elos is the nicest store in the state of NJ hands down in my opinion. They have awesome live stock at great prices.
Exotic fish they have this japanese wrasse that is absolutely incredible. it is a juvenile. I googled pictures of the adult it is absolutely incredible. Check out the

Lanceolatus wrasse

Lots of misinformation about the CXI emps! (CXI=christmas island)

Not ALL CXI emps will have the orange tail. I have had plenty that didn't, and plenty that have.

The juveniles you cannot tell if it will be orange or yellow. Most likely yellow, as most people agree the orange tail has to do with diet in the wild (what diet, they still dont know)

The smallest adult i have seen with orange tail was just under 4". for this ONE adult at this size with orange tail i've seen 10x more with yellow tails.

Your best bet is to find a small adult changing or just changed with the orange tail, and HOPE it keeps it. A lot of the adults with orange tails will lose the orange color, and revert to a yellowish color - still nicer than just yellow, but not as orange as most would like.

I have even seen some with nearly red tails - which was incredible. However, very very rare with this deep orange/reddish color.

I love the juvies. they are bullet proof, and are much deeper in color than normal emperors. the only choice for me if i was going to keep one.
