d2mini's "Essential Focus" Mixed Reef Build

Dennis,

I know its kind of assumed the sponges and some of the other stuff will eventually die off the TBS rock. Have you ever tried adding phyto to try feeding them to see if that keeps them going longer? Just a random thought, since I'm starting to culture some and was reading some of the TBS threads on here.

Yep, in the beginning I was dosing phytofeast and sponge power but my p04 ended up around .6 ppm. haha
So i stopped the phyto.
I still try to use sponge power and i feed oyster feast mixed with my food. Not sure if the sponges benefit from the oyster feast.

Wow Dennis, the tank is coming along very nicely! It's looking great! I will be very interested to hear what you think of that Mitras LX7.. I have a half of dozen of them that just arrived at my office today and will be added to my main display in the coming days.

Thanks, Scott! Not ToTM material like your tank but it's coming along.
The Radions have done well so far over this tank, so it will be interesting to see how the Mitras does over my nano, replacing the Pheonix 14k MH. It has it's work cut out for it, that's for sure. I refer to that tank as The Poo Tank, due to all my brown sps.

Hey Dennis nice build. In the beginning you mentioned you weren't particularly happy with your anemones colors but your most recent pic shows it looking great? How happy are you with it now?

Keep in mind when he says something looks horrible in his tanks it probably still looks better then 99% of everyone elses. :beachbum:

LOL! :D

I have two nems now. Not sure which I was referring to at the time, but the second one I got was originally from one of the boutique shops... it was an Inferno or similar and had some crazy nice color, originally selling for like $800. It definitely became more muted in my tank, more like your typical rainbow you can get for $50, which is what the first one was.

I'd like to know what's responsible for color intensity in nems.
Light? Water chemistry? Feeding?

Or all of the above. Randy once pushed his vinegar dosing extremely high. The zoox in the anemones seem to be able to uptake it and was starting to brown them out.

Shout out to you d2 as me reading through this build thread motivated me to get back into the hobby. Been gone for 8 years and lots of changes have occurred LOL.

I'm super impressed with your handiwork and attention to detail.

Maybe lack of nutrients in the water?
I've had to start dosing nitrates again... they are undetectable.
Everything else about my water chemistry is pretty close to NSW.

Thanks, and welcome back! :)

Typically to many zoox spurred on by higher nutrients or food sources like the acetic acid or lots of sun light will cause browning. Where as the lack of will help cause bleaching but so could stress.

So I'd say all the above can effect coloration. :)

So back around thanksgiving my Chaeto crashed.
It just started breaking up, falling apart, basically decomposing in the fuge and causing a mess.
I kind of expected that might happen eventually, but I was hoping just some of it would die off, not all of it. I couldn't seem to get it to recover.
So right before Xmas I completely cleaned out the fuge again. Nothing was left but the Chaeto. It had consumed all the other macros.
I was also starting to see nuisance algae in the display. Diatoms on the sand, slimy/stringy stuff and fluffy stuff on the rocks, gorgonians, even my urhchins.
Not a ton. A quick look at the tank and it looks fine. It's when you start to look at the details, and i've been trying to blow it off the rocks every few days, too.
Seemed to me like there would be plenty of nutrients, so I put in an order for more macros.
Got some chaeto and a couple red species again. Put them in the tank right after Xmas.
A week later, the chaeto is decomposing again! What the duck?
Now I started talking with Triton USA. It seems like I plenty of nutrients with the nuisance algae growing in the display, and even in the fuge. My nitrates are always low but usually register around 1 or 2 ppm. But I hadn't checked in a while. This was Triton's main concern after my explanation of events. So I tested again and..... nitrates were ZERO. Crap. Triton says that the algae in the display is a byproduct of the elements that are being dosed that are supposed to feed the algae bed. But the algae bed needs the main nutrients like nitrates to grow or it will die back.

So now I'm back to Nitrate dosing with the Spectracide Stump Remover.
Over the past week or two I've got nitrates back up to around 2-5ppm. Trying to keep it around 5 now and we'll see how it goes.
Still have the stuff in my display. The chaeto is still not looking good but gotta give it time.
I think the reds are doing ok.

Here's the kind of stuff I've got in the display...

Same here with the zero nitrate.. I have some calcium nitrate(dry), but I had avoided using it.. But I may need to.. Do you know if this is ok to use Dennis?

From note 5

I'm still sitting at 0 nitrates as well. Feeding alot more. Sorry to hear your fuge has become troublesome. I would think it would be rocking like before. Could your upload be to small for feeding it?

Yeah, that's what I was getting at above.
Seems as though I may be starving the fuge, and the other algae bed specific elements that are being dosed by Triton can't be consumed.
I'm working on getting some more fish, but right now my fish load is light and even feeding 2-3x per day is not enough apparently.

Bob Stark Of ESV says Nitrates up to 10 ppm are nothing to worry about.
Mine were @ 5 for the longest time but have dropped pretty low.
Might have to fix that soon.

Could a lights out in the display help kickstart the fuge. And possibly help did you of that nasty stuff you showed?

Could a lights out period possibly kick start the fuge again? It may help combat that bit of nasty you showed as well as let all the demand go to your macros.
Hopefully you will be able to rid yourself of it with little problem.

And put some fish in that tank:-)
