Deeznutz Hd 120 Shallow rimless (Pics)

The DSB is something I have used and it works very effective. Just make sure that a good source of sNd is used and seeded correctly to work. I really like the sandbed as it adds to the health of Sps in my opinion.

Can you please elaborate on this? What's the proper seeding procedure? What do you think is the actual benefit?

I initially was going to have one, but after talking to local club members and researching the heck out of it on RC I could not find any confirmation. In theory it will lower the nitrates, but I never had an issue with those anyhow.

With such a small DSB section, I doubt it'd do much good. Why LR in the sump? I think it'd make siphoning detritus a pain.

I must be getting old cause I'm much more interested in how awesome your house renovation turned out. Very impressive.

Thank you for your compliments. Its not old age that makes you interested in the reno. It's the stage of life you are in ;) I'm assuming you are looking at doing a reno yourself, do your research and go for it!

Yep, chaeto and live rock.

Cool

To be clear, if I were to add the DSB it will be in the sump and not the display.

In my last sump I added a 12x16x6deep DBS. I'm not sure it did anything. I'm just not sure if doing it this time around is worth the extra effort.

I plan on keeping most of the live rock in the sump because I don't want too much in the display. The tank is quite narrow, so too much live rock will make it look crowded.

Siphoning the detritus in the live rock section will be a quarterly thing and it will be a challenge. It's another reason why I wanted to move the frag tank into the middle section. This is where most of the detritus "should" be caught in the first two chambers which spans almost 5-1/2'

Your build is out of control lol!! In a good way though. As far as the DSB goes, from my understanding, in the long run, is more of a hassle because it has to be replaced. Also, it is a really effective way to "capture" nutrients. Nice work so far though. I am really jealous of your craftsman skills!

You could always try something like the MarinePure 8x8x4 Bio block? As opposed to LR in the sump. Raise it up on eggcrate etc. siphoning won't be as much of a pain.

Yes a RDSB is a good choice if the surface area and depth are correct. Seeding is basically critters from live rocks , worms and pods. All of this can be had from good quality live rock and from someone who already has an established sand bed, just ask for a cup or two and dump it on the new sand. It will also help with nutrients as having a barebottom tank looks great and clean but sometimes the system becomes ULNS and the owner can't keep the balance.

Edit; don't go with anything less the 4" sand bed.

We need more pics even if the tank is not ready hell I'll take shots of the cabinetry the floors the audis anything give us some eye candy lol

"Out of control" is how my wife describes my build as well :lol2:
As for the DSB, I used to run one in a sump. I also agree with it having to be replaced and it being a nutrient trap. That's why I'm so stuck on my decision.

Hmmmm, this is news to me. Looks like I'll have to do a bit of researching on this stuff. Any good links you could provide me?

Thank you for you response. What size area do think I should run to support this tank? I'm currently running a grow out tank with live rock and sand.
My display tank will be running sand of some sort :)

Lol, looks like I'll have to post some more pics to keep everyone interested in the build thread

What a great set of photos! You've got a great taste and design skills, this is already looking awesome even without a tank in the room.

And great looking previous tanks, you obviously know what you are doing and what you are after.

Are you going to be making a hole in that beautiful hardwood?

Sorry I took so long to comment after looking at the pics of your place I fainted and dropped my phone so had to go on my computer lol. Amazing crib and that stand is to die for can't wait to see the tank on it. How's the downstairs coming along

Thanks man, I have been reefing for 9 years now.:spin3:
This is going to be my last tank for a while, so I have to get it done right :)
No cutting corners here because the tank has to look like it belongs in the area we've chosen. Wifes orders lol

I've found with all of my last tanks, they were all thrown together quite quickly and any problems that arouse were dealt with at a later time.

This tank hit the drawing board 6 months ago and has gone through many revisions. But we are getting there, slowly but surely.:reading:

As for the floor, I pre made the holes for the floors. I just made a vent size hole with a vent cover on it during the renos. At the time I wasn't sure when I was going to be able to do a tank. So I had it done, just waiting to go.
I'll get a pics when I get a chance.

So I'm happy to share with all fellow enthusiast.

The basement hasn't been touched since my last update with the pics. Hopefully I can run my power feeds this weekend and dry wall it.
I have all the material, just need some time.

I've been busy with cleaning up the yard. My irrigation lines got damaged from the aerator guys, so I have 9 repairs to make :(

I just took delivery on my Toro time master and a Stihl Kombo trimmer. Love this set up so far. The timemaster is such a great mower, the 30" deck is so so sick :)

As for the stand, the top part of the stand was taken back to the builders. There was a huge run in the paint on the front part, plus they are cutting out the holes for the drains while its gone. I should be seeing it back some time this week.

I will post when I get it back.
Mess... What mess? haha looking good, will be following this

Thanks man, it is messy around here with a 4 year old running around. I moved stuff so that it's just out of sight. Makes for better pics.
I'm happy that you will be following.:)

So late lastnight my buddy and I went to go pick up my 8 foot sump!
Showed up and it was already on a dolly ready to be loaded. A bit dusty though. I took a quick look and I noticed a few more bulk heads installed then I thought. Oh well, more holes to plug. No big deal.

Seller asked if we were interested in seeing his display. Of course we were :)

As we went inside, we were greeted with a 8x3x4 acrylic monster! Massive tank, unfortunately it was fish only. Had a hideous fake sunken ship and lit by the cheapest Home depot LED spot lights I've ever seen. He had 2 leather which were in bad shape as well. This guy was no reefer, that's for sure.

After listening to the owner toot his own horn for 20 mins about every subject imaginable, we had enough and decided to leave lol.

As I was looking over the sump tank, I realized it had a starphire front pane! Bonus. The trim was loose on top, so I pulled it off. The tank was also rimless! Dope!

Then I noticed the outside corner of the tank had a 1/2" chip in the glass. The glass was only 1/2" to begin with.
After debating if I should take the tank and fix it or not, I decided to offer him 100 bucks for it. The owner assured me he'd rather smash it then sell it for that price, considering it had a huge chip in the glass.

I've decided to pass on the tank, wasn't going to pay full pop for a tank that may or may not work.

I hope the guy selling the tank honestly didn't know about the chip in the glass and it only happened after they moved it. But my gut tells me he knew about it, regardless if it just happened or not.

Tank can most likely be fixed, but the seller being a douche bag can not be fixed.

This guys going to have a lot of broken glass to clean up after smashing the tank lol

Disappointing night and update to say the least :'( Would have been an amazing sump. Oh well

So back to the drawing board as the odd of me finding another 8 foot tank is pretty slim. Most likely have to resort to a Bigals standard 125 long 72x18x22.
Going custom sump might be too expensive :(
