Hi all.

I am a 25 year old Army Officer and have owned a 29 gallon tank for about 6 years. It has been off and on due to it being moved at least once a year. I returned from an Iraq deployment a few months ago and we have set everything back up. It currently contains 7 turbo snails, 1 green chromis, and 1 sailfin blenny with about 30 pounds of live rock and 40 or so of sand. My kids love to watch the fish, but they also like to beat on the glass to watch them move. Not the thing I like to see. I plan on keeping this setup for a couple of years, at least until I am out of the Army and can live in one place for more than a year. I am here to gain some more information that I can apply to my small tank and to start building plans for a larger reef system.

Thanks.

hi-pierce, my respect and thanks to you for your bravery and courage my friend, thanks for your service fella :)

theres plenty of information here, just read the stickys under this thread at the top of the forum and

New to RC

I finally did it, joined Reef Central. I have used it for years for good info but never joined. Well now that I am single again, have some time on my hands and have moved to Richmond I find myself spending more time on the computer and with my new reef set-up. You can see pictures of it in the Richmond Reef Club forum under 'aquarium room -2months old'
I have played with aquariums, fish and coral for many years first with fresh and then with salt. I have kept various fresh water tanks since I was young, always having a metal frame 40 gal. in my room when I was living at home, then when I went to college started a 125 gallon fresh water and a 20 gallon tank for an octopus that I found in a coke bottle scubadiving, my first saltwater tank. Kept it alive on gold fish for about 6 months and then placed it back in the ocean. I was amazed at the varity and color of ocean fauna during many dive trips.
Several years latter when I had a job and some expendable income got into saltwater reef aquariums. I started with a 60 gallon which filled up fast and turned into a 125 and then to a 240 within a couple of years. When I moved from South Pasadena to Santa Barbara I decided that 240 looked small and bought a custom made glass 300 gal. and ran this for a few years before starting a 1000 gal. Well that about took all of my free time along with a good chunk of electricity.
When I got divorced they all had to go.
Put away some stuff in storage, gave away some and sold some.
About a year ago I took a job in Richmond and brought some of my tanks out here to start things on a smaller basis but be more involved in raising quality coral and experiment with equipment and enviroment to see its effect on growth rates. I set up my tanks about 2 months ago and started adding coral about a month ago, so far so good have gone thru a bunch of cycles and tanks look stable now. I started to frag my corals about three weeks ago and plan to bring my 300 gal tank out here someday to place the best frags in. For now working of coral growth rates and the effect that fragging has on color and growth. Also plan to play around with new types of LED lighting and its effect on growth and color.

Hey guys I'm Kevin from Chicago, IL. I've had a tank for about one year and sad to say it I'm addicted to it. Right now I have a 180 gal reef tank with about 15 fish and 13 corals ranging from Zoas, Softies and acros. I have 3 actinic bulbs with 2 20k halides.

Hi all,
I've been keeping freshwater tanks for a while now and have decided to take the plunge into saltwater. I stumbled across Reef Central and after browsing the forums in the shadows for an hour or two, I decided to join. I'm starting a 30 gallon tank soon and should be full of new-to-marine questions. Hope to get to know you all.

Hey everyone,

I have been keeping SW tanks for almost 2 years now and have just come across this site so I thought I would say hi. Currently I have a 20 gallon tank setup with softies and a few LPS corals. I am planning to upgrade to a 75 gallon in about a month or so and will start a thread when I start to pull things together.

A little more about myself. I am a graduate student in Marine Biology at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi and will be graduating in August and starting my Ph.D. My main areas of study are in coral genetics and evolution.

Alright, well thats all for now. I look forward to learning a ton and helping out wherever I can! Have a great day!

Hi im farely new to the hobby (4-5 years is fairly new to me) and just thought i would post my required introduction..

i actually own 1 tank and sorta own a second.

Mine is a 75g oceanic RR, 40g sump witha built in fuge, and a home made skimmer that came with the tank. it has a home built canopy as well, with MH's and 4 T5 bulbs, not sure on the wattage or any other info, as i have yet to set the tank up and will be replacing them with newer bulbs.

The tank that i "sorta" own is a 35g all glass OLD tank that was given to me by a friend for around 10 bucks lol. It has 3 T5 bulbs with the pretty ( and useless IMO) built in LED's. It has roughly 40 lbs of LR, both a mixture figi and tonga. I recently moved back to Texas from the Durango Co. area and upon moving back i had to set up camp at my folks place for a couple weeks while i closed on my new house. laugh if you want, mom's rent is waaaay cheaper then my new mortgage payment. LOL She has only fish at the moment, well except for the few little bits of leather that clung on during the move back. Im pretty sure we have a few yellow tail damsels, a yellow tang and a silly maroon clown who acts like a new puppy. OH... we use a canister filter, YES i said it... CANISTER filter.. its a magnum 350 and it works just dandy lol

Anyway i live in Odessa Tx, and am currently looking for a local reef club, or looking to start one i know there are a lot of reefers in my area, as i have been reefing in the area for a while myself..

I will be starting my new tank and the set up in the next week or so, i work out of the country so its kind of hard to do it in a timely manner, but i will post pics of the progress as it comes, which will be at a snails crawl lol

howdy. I have been re-bitten by the reef bug and am designing my tank. Came here to get good and educated before I spend too much money and still don't do it right.

Hi Out There:

Just joined RC and want to set up a 125 gal reef tank. Have talked to several salt water stores, read several books and checked out various web sites and have received a lot of different information. Now I am really confused as to exactly what equipment is needed to begin. I have decided the I want a
RO/DI system and a sump. If anyone has any ideas on how to obtain good information, please let me know. Thanks pat

Hi Pat

To Reef Central

Those are good first steps. You also want to look into lighting as it is very important. Skimmers, of one type or the other, are pretty much common place on larger tanks. Natural filtration is the method of choice, so be prepared to shell out some bucks for LR and sand. Take a look at Reefkeeping Magazine for all sorts of articles on setting up a tank.

After getting an old fw tank going for my girlfriend I got sucked into the hobby. Her tank is still up and running and I have since purched a 46g bowfront. I started off with brackish puffers but found that the options for these tanks are pretty limited. I have since got rid of the puffers and have gone full salt. The tank has been running for nearly a month at the higher sg and is doing pretty good as far as I can tell. I added about 25-30 pounds of lr to my 40-50 pounds of br. The sand bed is now full of life and the hermits are doing what they do all day and night. I have also purchesed a lawnmower blenny and some turbo snails to complete the first team of a growing cuc. I will be moving the tank next week to a better location and will be slowly adding fish and soft corals as soon as things balance back out.
