Hello, Reef Central. My name is Jimmie, and I'm extremely new to the SW hobby. So new I'm reading and researching/learning before I dive in and make an investment. I'm hoping to learn a lot for this community and eventually share my experiences with you all.

Hi all :wavehand:,

I'm Melissa (Mel) and new to the SW hobby. Been doing the FW thing for a little over 1.5 years now. Currently have three 55 Gallon FW tanks with a 125 Gallon tank on order for an August setup date for a nice CA/SA Cichlid display.

In my freshwater tanks I keep mainly cichlids - One tank contains Matumbi Hunters and Crimson Tides, the other has a proven Gold Saum/False Green Terror pair and the third tank is a planted community.

I picked up a SW tank on a whim (truly awesome craigslist deal) but I was planning on getting into SW after my 125G was setup, so a little sooner then expected. My main goal for my SW setup is to be a nice colorful mix of fish and corals - just focusing on the fish for right now, will get into coral after my larger tank is setup. The SW tank is the only tank in my living room, the others are in my den/fish room so really hoping I can make it a nice little setup.

Hey People! Nick here, I'm new to the hobby, but I've done a ton of research to come to this point. I have a 28 gallon nano cube hqi with metal halides, still cycling. Just wanted to say hi.

Love the cichlid tanks---great fish to keep
Sounds like you got a really good deal on Craigs List. I'm always suggesting that people try on there and on kijiji.com
What other stuff came with the tank deal?

You are doing it right Nick--by researching, joining RC and by exercising patience while your tank cycles properly.

Yeah, big cichlid fan - my passion, but really enjoying the salty side too :D

As for the craigslist deal, it was $100 for the following:

29 Gallon tank w/black iron stand, glass top, 2 x Powerheads, Biowheel filter, Seaclone SCPS 100 skimmer, 40 lb of live rock (with some nice coraline growth), crushed coral substrate and live stock (clown fish, six line wrasse, yellow tail damsel, bicolor dottyback, skunk shrimp, turbo snail and several dwarf blue hermit crabs

Not a fan of the crushed coral (I keep sand in all my freshwater setups) but decided that I'm just going to keep it as it doesn't look half bad and I don't want to send the tank into a mini cycle by switching it out. When I moved the tank I kept the crushed coral in the tank.

fantastic deal--you have over 200 bucks in live rock alone there.

I would suggest that you do replace the crushed coral substrate but just concentrate on a very small area(1/4 of it) at a time and do it over the next month. That will minimize the impact it has on the water chemistry.

Hi I'm new to Reef Central and to saltwater aquariums.

My Dad use to keep freshwater tanks when I was younger and I helped him with them but thats about my experience with aquariums.

My girlfriend and I are looking at starting a salt water aquarium soon and I have been reading up on it as much as I can. Lots to take in at once!

I've been trying to look for some deals on tanks and stands so hopefully I can find something soon. I am in no rush though so I am going to make sure that I get everything that I need and that I do it right the first time.

I seems that I found a good LFS to go to and get some help as well as the community here seems really good. Hopefully my patience and some good advice will get me started on the right track.

Once I starting getting everything and putting together everything I will take some pictures and document it in a thread like a lot of people here do.

I am glad you have joined this site--getting an opinion from your peers that are hobbyists is a good idea besides relying on the LFS for advice. (I am saying this with a good deal of tact and diplomacy ;) )
Look forward to following your thread

Thanks for the welcome. I agree that the hobbyist are the best people to ask for advice. It's just always good to have a LFS that you can feel safe getting fish and corals from. Granted I haven't gotten any yet but from what I hear their reputation is good and I more then likely will go there to start with.

Hey guys I am a new reef central member, but I have been around for the past year lurking.

I think I can finally start my first sw reef, because of my age,16, it is a little bit expensive for me. However, I've begun working this summer so hopefully I will be able to start my own sw reef.

Hi my name is Joey, I have a 90 gal. 2x 250w Metal halide 20k's, with about 100 lbs of assorted live rock, 20 gal. sump, new reef octo 150 skimmer. "11 hours of light". This display has been up for about 6 months or so, all is going well accept for the hair algea. Phosphates are nill 2 none calcium is 430ppm, akh is 11-12, I have tried scrubbing, treating it chemicly with API algea fix, a sea hare who got eaten by my blower "so tragic".. Any other suggestions would be mucho appreciated. Thank you.

Hello All,

Just joined and it will be my first time doing a SW setup. I have always admired it but always had a freshwater tank. My tank has cycled and has been been stable for 3 months now, so I will be introducing fish and corals soon!

H20junkie--there is no age requirement for starting a reef tank--just need alot of money.;)
You should check on kijiji.com and craigslist.com for deals. Someone just posted on the page before about an excellent deal they got.
Any chance you get, read the diy forum. You can save alot of money that way too.

The hair algae could still be a natural occurance from the live rock curing still.

Are you using ro/di water?

That said here is a good blog on regular things you can do to fight algae:
