New to reefcentral

New to reefcentral

Hey I am new to this Forum. I have had a couple different saltwater tanks over the last 4 years and had to break them down due to moving. I am established at my new place and am looking to start another tank. I am still in the planning stages and have not even decided what size to do. My last tanks were 55 gallon and 29 gallon FOWLR and some soft corals. Looking forward to getting started again!

Hey everybody my name is Austin. I live in norcal and I am new to Reef Central. I have had an all fish setup for a couple years but now with the influence of my girlfriend's cousin, a fellow RC member Matt Clowns, I am taking that tank down and we are building/setting up a reef tank. It is going to be a 29gal bow front display tank. It has back over flow which we cut and installed. We plumbed it with (2)1" corner drains and a 1" to 3/4" return. We still have to build the stand and plumb into a 20gal sump. Not sure how to upload pics yet but I will as soon as I am able to figure it out and keep you all updated on the progress. Feel free to messege me because I am still quite new at the reef setup and I am open to feedback and new info. Thanks for reading and I look forward to meeting some new people and checking out everybody's tanks!

I live in Western North Carolina. I have kept marine aquariums for many years but have been out of the hobby for about 12 years. I am sticking my toe back in with a 50g cube that will be a clownfish/anemone tank.

RC is a great resource.

hi-mark it can be an advantage in a way if your new to fish tanks, sometimes starting straight off into marine is a good thing, you dont get freshwater equipment and bad habits from freshwater haha.

would like to know something HOW ARE YOU ALL DOING, ???????? about live rock, i have 350lbs of live rock in my tank how do you get the displacment for the water, my tank is 72" long X 24" wide X 30" tall, with a 40gal refugium that i just built, plus two sumps from other tanks that i use as prefilters on this one, i will soon get this all togather and post some pic, i built this in to one of my walls in the tv room, please get back with me on this

I've been involved for about 6 years and i'm going to switch from a 75g reef to a 180g reef and from an attached 35g estuary to an 85g attached estuary (for seahorses, pipefish and mandarins). I've been quite involved with our local club here in SW Florida over the last year and have been to RC a few times, but I think it's time I get more involved here. I guess may favorite aquarium animal is the anemone. I have a green long tentacale, a green & white rock flower, and red, white and blue rock flower, a rose bubble tip and a couple od purple tip condys.

It's hard to answer your question about displacement, rock can be porous or it can be dense. Unless you test it all yourself you're going to have to estimate it. Usually you would subtract about 30% from your total display tank volume. So (to keep it easy) if you have 100 gallons, you would roughly have 70 gallons of water due to rock, sand, power heads, whatever else that would displace water. Hope that answers your question. Wow you really got something for anemones. Hope your upgrade goes well. It would be nice to share your experience here on RC. (Just make sure you take lots of pictures)

I guess I have been lurking long enough. I have in the works a new saltwater tank and have purchased the sump and most of the stuff to go with it. I am waiting a little to get the display tank, but am looking at a total system volume of somewhere around 100G. Gonna start a new thread over in the DIY thread, I think that's where it goes for new builds.

I have all but a uv sterylizer, a calcium reactor and a phosphate reactor. With many questions, let me ask, are any of those essiential to a healthy tank? Starting off, I have questions on how to start my system up. I'm including a refugium in my system and can't determine if I should set it up before or after the tank is cycled and if it should include mud and/or live sand in it? Thanks for your help

Hi all, my name is Clint and I'm new to the forums here, and relatively new to the hobby. Got a 28g bicube for the wife for her birthday about 9 months ago as she had heard about reefing from a friend. Soon after I got roped into it with her and here I am.

We're still on our biocube, but finding that we're itching for more room to spread everything out. So, plans in the nearish future of building our own acrylic tank after we've put a bit more research in to everything. (One step at a time while we're just wanting to run.)

You can post a tank build over in the DIY but if there's not going to be a lot of DIY then most post it in the Reef discussion forum

set up your fuge along with everything else. a UV isn't necessary at all, most say to leave it out, I say if you already have it use it if you don't then save your money. as for the calcium reactor, unless you understand the relationship between alkalinity, calcium, magnesium and ph I would wait to use one in a tank. They are usually reserved for those with a lto of experience. many new people to the hobby dose 2 part or kalkwasser. You can save your money on mud and live sand, the mud isn't needed unless your going for a planted tank, and sand will eventually become live and no reason to spend the extra $$
