japanese zoos the next craze?

What are the laws about bringing corals across the border. I'm not THAT far from Canada. It is reasonable to consider that I might be up there some time and want to buy stuff at a store in say Toronto. Can it be done? or is it illegal? a PITA? what?

I know the other way from US to Canada you can bring back the coral but not the live rock it is on---one of the more inane custom laws we have here.:(

For what it's worth this is the reason you need to see in person what you are buying. These are my "Deepwater" Jape purple and greens....not Photoshopped of course. Under a Current USA Duel Satellite 2x18w.

While I don't typically fall into crazes, I really dig these guys. They remind me of purple hornets with larger rings...and since my LFS is selling 50 polyps for $50 of any variety, I can't pass them up and will be getting them tomorrow!

You lucky dog!!! I wish my lfs was tropicorium. I have ordered from brian before and was super happy. I will check their site now. thanks

jap zoas

jap zoas

These "japanese zoa's" are most likely being collected in japan and sent to another country, which does not have laws against their import and then shipped from that country to the US. There are over 30 different morphs of these zoa's. Some are exactly like "eagle eyes" or "whammin watermelons" and several other very common colors. Some are claiming they are from deep water, but I've had several morphs of Japanese Zoa's for about 4 months or so under 10K 250 watt HQI and 2 65watt blue actinics that open great and never showed signs of shock from too bright of lighting. They are very slow growing, so don't expect to re-coupe your money on them very quickly. In 4 months none of mine have showed any budding or new growth, as all my other zoa's outgrow them by leaps and bounds.

deepwater zoas are starting to pop up in lots of places. Prepare to pay a premium though. on average its about $10 bux a polpy. I got these a few days ago...

these pics were taken just after adding them to my DT.

those are gorgeous

it will not be long till every online vendor is calling there eagle eyes etc deep water zoas. these are nice color combinations, but the stupid high prices that zoas have been going for in the last few years in my opinion is a joke.

I have to agree with onegreenray on this one...zoa/paly price are pretty ridiculous right now. I can hardly justify paying $40 a polyp for a high end acan because of size...but for a single zoa polyp smaller than a dime? I guess to each his own, but this hobby is quickly turning into a business and is loosing much of it's fun characteristics.

There's ONE good thing about Canadian prices is that since the market is small over here (compared to the US) thus the chances of us getting a good and decent prices is always a Plus sigh .... :D !! And we have at least two LFS' with good competitive prices.
Plus we don't even have to travel far to get these Zoas too!! They're all under 30 minutes of driving time too!!!

Not sure what photo's you are referring to, but all my colonies are doing very well. Think I lost 3/4 of one colony, otherwise they all look as good as the day I bought them. Seem to grow onto liverock rather quickly also.

What's the survival rate on these wild colonies? They don't look very healthy in the photo's posted. Does anyone have a healthy frag of them?

Good question.

Puffy - I still have my frag doing well from the swap and I don't dose vitamin C :)
That's good to hear. As far as I can tell, VC has no effect on the white toothpaste-type fungus mine had.

The term "deepwater" is what makes me go "Humm". What are we calling "deepwater" or is it just a catch phrase? Last time I knew the deeper you go the less colorful things get. And yet the zoanthids are just rich in color.

From my understanding they "require" less light but dont know the depths these are collected from. But they do great under halides so dont know for sure.

From what I can tell they are much smaller in diameter than other zoathids. Were talking tiny. 1/8" around or so each polyp. I only have the eagle eye lookalikes. Gotta get a magnifying glass to se its mouth.

Nope ..... you're wrong about the polyp size of the Deepwater Zoas as they're larger than the usual Zoas .... and they're as Tiny as most Aussie Zoas.

Then i guess my LFS has been had on the Japanese "deepwater" zoas, cause these things are tiny they received(the polyps themselves), gotta looksy at the invoice when they came in. And said they were Japanese Polyps.

They have only had them a couple days and same with the ones I got so maybe not all the way open ?
