local tropical reports

Good dive at the bridge today. In addition to what Tom mentioned, Monkeyfish spotted a very small bicolor damsel. Tried to catch it, but that damsel wasn't having any of that

That makes sense, after all its one of the fastest growing fish in the world.

Justin,

Hows he doing? What does he eat?

Doing great. feeding on frozen mysis shrimp 3 times a day.

Sounds good.

I think you have a good excuse to setup a big tank! Wait it may be cheaper to just get one of the above ground pools on craigslist for a $100!!.

I'm putting next Sunday on the calender for sore thumb.

Zach, I'm not sure what your question is. The link is to my gallery. It is a colorfull jellyfish. I saw it in the water yesterday. Part of its body was out of the water acting like a sail. If someone knows how to get the pics onto this thread, be my guest and make it so.

Here is few shots of a bird that was swimming under water. It would land, spot its prey, then go in head first swimming after it.

the first "jelly" appears to be a portugese man of war... nasty stingers can trail quite a distance behind them.

If I remember righht they actually are not jellyfish

I believe you are correct. Did a little research on it, and it does appear to be a Man O War. Yikes!! Time for a new wet suit.

Where was that blue bottle (man-of-war) picture taken? They are kind of cool, half of the babies are "born" with thier "sail" facing one direction and the other half have it facing the other direction. So no matter what direction the wind is, half should survive. An interesting survival adaptation.

As far as the bird is concerned it looks like a shearwater, and probably a Greater Shearwater, but I'm not very good with pelagic birds. How far off shore where you when you spotted it?

Yup, Man O War. I've seen them as far north as Cape Cod Canal :eek1:

The bird is a Greater Shearwater.

How far out were you?

The man o war was just outside of Shinnicock inlet and the bird was 25 miles out of Shinnicock. Saw some other creatures that made me shake in my boots, 3 whales 5miles out, several Hammerheads and a school of Blue Fin Tunas 15 miles out, and the largest White Shark i have ever seen in my life 25 miles out. Unfortunately i couldn't get a clear photo of the tunas and sharks. Believe me when i say there were 4 grown men with dirty underwear after seeing Mr. White inspecting our boat. Also saw my first Dusky. Should be interesting to see what comes up the stream in the next few weeks.
