local tropical reports

Went out to Robert Moses just west of OBI. Didn't check tides and unfortunately it was high tide early this morning. Anyway my son and I caught some really small permits, lots of blow fish(local), lots of what I call King fish (looks like in the cod family). So besides the baby permits no tropicals.
Took one small blow fish home. He ate 2 seconds after putting in the tank. I hope he is reef safe??
Going to try again tomorrow at low tide.

You're kidding, right?

I've never kept a local Puffer, or bothered researching them, but to the best of my knowledge, there's no such thing as a reef safe puffer. I know, off the top of my head that the porcupine, dogface, stars and stripes are not reef safe.
I'd remove him if possible, or at least PM Billsreef for a definite answer.

Larry, Thanks, We caught a lot of large blowfish but the one I put in the tank is about 3/4 inch. Sounds like I should let him go...

Justin, Thats what I read, but only when they get bigger. My son and all his buddies really like this little guy. Do you know of any puffers that are reef safe?

Thanks,
Walter

I had a Northern Puffer (if that is what you have) in my temperate system. He never bothered any other fish, but was a terror against and and all inverts.

It was probably ~4" when I got him and one year later was around 8-9"

There are no puffers that are considered reef safe. If u truly want to keep him set up a cheep and quick FOWLR to keep him. What ever you do not release him back into the wild. Now that he was in your tank you need to ether find a place to put him or put him to sleep. I might sound bad for saying that but you risk releasing disease from your tank into the wild if you let him go.

Ok he has to go. If anyone wants him feel free to pick him up. Otherwise I think I will setup another tank?

Today's catch:
2 - Small Lookdowns with very long fins! still have their green stripes.
1 - Banded Butterfly 1/2 inch.
1 - Fish that looks like a giant pea with fins.
1 - Bright Orange Big eye about 1 inch long.
3 - Unidentified fish dark brown with red fins and a thin blue stripe coming from the jaw. Will upload pics later.
1 - Lizard fish

Walter

I think it is Chaetodon ocellatus but it has that black stripe that Chaetodon ocellatus doesn't have, but maybe its cause its so young

That's pretty typical for the Northern Puffers. The southern Bandtails will also nip at other fish.

Bill,

Any suggestions on what Lookdowns may eat? I assume since they are in the jack family they would eat mysis. However they have not eaten anything yet. Its only two days so not so worried yet.
The butterfly is eating anything I put in the tank along with some type of small snapper? Justin's guess was the fish was some type of snapper which I agree. He has the body type of a snapper but he's only 1" long with red fins and a black stripe across his face crossing over his eye. I will try to get picks up today.

Walter

Get some grass shrimp, the Lookdowns will snap them up in a heart beat. After they settle in, they usually can be taught to eat mysis. I also agree that other fish sounds like a snapper, probably a grey snapper from the description.

Sounds good plenty of grass shrimp around!

The snapper looks cool but noticed he has a very large mouth! So he is going to have to go soon :(

Thanks!
