My 240g FOWLR

Hi Peter, butterfly advice again ( sorry to keep bugging you). A LFS just got in a 4" rainfordi, beautiful fish at fair market price. I've shown interest, but told him I want to see it eating with gusto before I purchase. Well there goes any plans for a reef! Looks like it will be a FOWLR ;-)

Any advice on the rainfordi? I am aware they are a difficult species. Have you run into issues of aggression or overly timid?

Thanks again,

Francis

If he looks active and healthy and has good weight, and at least tries some food, I'd give it a shot. Basically throw every food at your disposal at him. Mine accepted pellets rather quickly, to be honest. He's neither aggressive nor passive.... one of my favorites in the tank!

Thanks Peter, I don't have any room in my QT tanks at the moment so they have agreed to hold him for me for two weeks and work on getting it eating. Will keep you posted.

Hey Peter, hows that Bream doing? I believe you were down to onelast I checked. I'm thinking about getting one for myself

Correct, I am down to one (they cannot be kept in multiples, at least not in a 240g). Not sure I want to keep him... he's just an odd looking fish alone in there, compared to my other fish. We'll see... if he really does end up looking like the adult pics I found, and doesn't get too big, I may just keep him.

Nice! I wonder how big they'll actually get in captivity. I've seen them really large at public aquariums.

Thought you were getting rid of the semilarvatus?

He ended up playing nice with the falcula. So he stays for now.

I'll likely be catching and removing the falcula today :(. Several fish have started to pick on him (I'm assuming due to the semilarvatus corralling him in a small area all the time). Sucks, since falculas are one of my favorites... but there's no guarantee at this point that simply removing the semilarvatus will stop all the aggression against the fish.

I'll be removing this fish as soon as I catch him. They get BIG judging by this picture I found of Joe Yaiullo's 20,000g reef. Yikes!

I imagine you removed the falcula by now. Did you try taping a mirror to the glass to distract the other fish for a while? It works for tangs but I don't recall people using a mirror for butterfly aggression. It is disappointing you have that type of aggression in a 240.

I actually have not removed him. The other fish bothering him was a passing event. It's just the semi that is obsessed with him. But the falcula fights back, and is growing, visibly! So, I'm hoping this turns out like it did with the semi and the fasciatus. Those two now ignore each other.

As usual, Awesome Peter. it makes me so excited to set up my 240, only another month or so.

Thanks for the update video.

Peter- Great looking fish, everything looks to be thriving. How is the temperament of the Rock Beauty? I am guessing he is pretty mellow considering he is one of the smaller angels in there.

Thanks... I kinda wish I went 30" tall for a 300, TBH.

Very mellow for a Holacanthus. I still find him cleaning other large fish once in a while.
