Elegance before all

When I was younger ( oh almighty 80's ) there was a guy called Albert Thiel he was together with John Tullock the 2 American Gurus to go for info.

Looking back in perspective I think Tullock was always right. He always encourage the famous words "More Biology less technology"

While Thiel was kinda the opposite. He went in to explore some crazy designs around filtration and those machines in those days looked so appealing!

I remember buying this filter that had even an Oxygen reactor anyhow on those glorious days the challenge was to keep elegance corals which by the way kept piling like rocks on everybody else reef of the day. Talking about serial killers dam it LOL

The entrance of the cave was the perfect spot for this Vietnam Elegance.
Elegance seem to do great always at the bottom in the sand and with indirect light so what a perfect spot and close to the food source which I can see how much it enjoys.

Hello Frank,

Is your tank SPS? what kind of flow are you running? the sand you have in your display tank, could you give some specs as to the depth and size? See you have some gobbies and other critters than like sand in your pictures.

I am in the process of a large build (a 1,000g tank) and had planned on a DSB in it, but after speaking with several people at MACNA last weekend, they recommendation was not to go to a deep sand bed in the display tank with SPS the flow stirs up the sand and the high flow suspends it and/or throws it up onto the live rock/corals. May I ask your experience with it?

The recommendations were to use a heavier/larger sand, don't place sand under the rock if planning on a detritus clearing loop under the rock. There were a few other thoughts I have been thinking about, including making some protected areas or pockets and making them 6" deep to host some critters and such.

As for a DSB, my system will be having two DSB 32" x 96" x 16" with 8" of sand (over 30 c.ft. total) and 6" of water flowing over top. There will be some live rock on the top of the sand to interrupt flow across the sand bed and also have some sponges on them.

am very interested in how you modified the aqua medic calcium reactor i have a similar one and they not easy to use always

well for starters you know that such moves voids any warranty but sometimes and looking at the circumstances you've got to act upon.

the pump that comes with the reactor is not good in my opinion so I substitute for a blue line the (yellow ones) and what a difference now I have a Ca reactor.

Why did you use urchins in the mangrove refugium?

I use them for algae and leave eating purposes due to the size of these sumps sometimes the odd leave scape my attention and I just can recover it so the Urchins do a neat job
