Peeping Banggai Fry

I'm still unclear on the hufa's. The "selco" instructions say that there's no point in giving any to the nauplii till they are at least 24-48 hours old...cause they won't absorb it. And so I'm feeding the newly hatched BBS that still have their yolk sack as well, and so should stay more nutrient rich while waiting for the next new BBS. So is it worth me getting a whole new set up for the brine shrimp when they don't even absorb the selco before I feed them to the fry? I'm not sure yet.

I'm hopeing to ween the fry onto frozen food that does have more nutritional value. Like cyclopeese...asap. ;) wish me luck.

yep. Correct. Usually when I hatch BBS i use 2 1.5liter bottles so i dont really finish them in one day. So after the 1st day thats when I add hufa to the mix to enrich the BBS.

I only have the hatching discs/trays. Really simple with no moving parts or need for bubbleing. And the selco people say not to add the hufa's to the hatching water...and that would mean just one more step for me to complicate things and cause me to mess up. :P

so for now (this clutch) I think I'll just use two separate hatcheries and keep the BBS cycled out before they need the hufa.

Well if you have the hatching discs/trays i guess that should work. Its just a matter of what your preference is. Good luck! :)

Hi Dave, in my experience and with the help of Frank Marini I steered away from Selco as a gutloading food for the NHBS. I have had more success with the algae pastes and specifically the mixed formulas. And it works similiar to the way rots are grown. Meaning that the water will slowly turn a lighter green color as the shrimp eat it.

I get mine from Brine Shrimp Direct.

sorry that the macro is so bad...it's a simple attachment onto a standard zoom lens that helps to take macro pics.

as far as the feeding thing. After reading about BBS, I have read that they "don't" eat till about the second day after hatching...and all mine are fed to the fry before that time. So they wouldn't be eating the stuff anyways would they? For now I'm broke anyways, and will just try to make due till the next pay period.

So far the fry are growing well and eating great. They are so cute when they start snapping up the little food. The 13 fry are still going strong.

My babies are 3 weeks old now, but won't touch anything other than bbs. I'm enriching the bbs with selcon, so I'm not too worried about nutrition, but I know the longer they stay on bbs the harder it is to wean them off.

So far I've only tried cyclop-eeze, and they don't even look at it. Any suggestions?

Have you tried shaved Mini Mysis yet???
What I did was add a little shaved Mysis with BBS in the morning...
Once they strike at it, the others will follow.
Don't get discouraged, 3 weeks is still young... you will be surprise what will happen in 1 week...

We made a blend of shaved Mini Mysis, cyclop-eeze and weaning Otohime...
But we found if you feed the frozen mixture in the morning, that is when they seem to be the most hungriest, hope that makes since... but keep offering the frozen, they will eventually eat it.
We added a few snails and crabs to the tank to help with the left overs....

Our babies are eating the frozen Mini Mysis, BUT.....Ed still likes to feed them live adult brine shrimp... he gets a big kick out of watching them "swim" after the live. He says, they need the exercise....:lolspin:

today is the ninth (9th) day since the male released the fry, and I got to go to petsmart, they had frozen BBS, but no cyclopsese. I got the bbs, and after feeding it to them, they ate it right up. They didn't go as crazy for it once it stopped "moving" in the flow, but if I squirted a little water and made them move at all the fry would again start to eat them up. So my question is, how healthy is frozen BBS by hikari? It doesn't say it has HUFA's, but it says high in DHA(Docosa Hexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eilosa Pentaen Acid). Is that good, bad, neither?

I'm so proud of my youngins for eating frozen food already.

well I've been feeding frozen BBS and crushed up flake food. I'm really surprised at how readily they eat those two foods as long as they are moving. So I keep the flow turned up now for feeding. However they still pounce on the BBS (live) more than anything. But they ARE eating other prepaired foods. :)

What a fascinating thread, I will be tagging along for the ride as well. Once my tank is firmly established I plan to acquire a pair of Banggai Cardinalfish. From what others have told me and from the research that I've done it appears that the adults are reasonably hardy.

There is quite a bit of useful information, regarding breeding Banggai Cardinalfish, in the article listed below:

congrats daveonbass! Looks like your headed in the right direction. Just keep them well fed and im sure everything will turn out great!

As for the BBS, im not sure about the EPA and DHA, but im sure those help a bit. There is not much research on those yet for the health of banggai but as long as they are feeding and you don't experience any SFS, that should be ok. Enriching with HUFA is actually very easy. Just get some selcon or aminomega and just soak the frozen/flake food in that for a couple of minutes before feeding to your fry. That should provide atleast some HUFA to the fry.

Good luck!
