Petco to buy Drs Foster Smith

maybe

just maybe

petco will see the amazing job that is being/has been done by drs foster and smith, will see that doing good business that way can be lucrative, and will see that CHANGING their existing policies/practices regarding aquaria will benefit them financially in the long term.

just sayin'

you never know, i'll wait and see before I make judgement

Unless petco decides to learn from LA and straighten up thier act many reefers are going to walk simply due to that association. I have no reason to doubt Kevin's words, they do provide a level of comfort, but i'll be honest... I threw up a bit when I first learned about this.

I always love how people jump straight to the negative campaign.. Calm down people. Why dont you give it some time and adjust to the changes. Companies that do not evolve, do not prosper...

I've never seen a merger happen where the purchasing company didn't go in and implement "efficiencies" to increase margin and justify the premiuim that they paid for the company. It's not impossible but I'm not going to be holding my breath.

Free market capitalism is a wonderful thing. Market evolution is necessary. We all get to help decide which companies survive and which do not by choosing which to support.

Sirius with XM. Disney with Pixar. P&G with Gillette. Pfizer with Pharmacia. Exxon with Mobil. Apple with NeXT. AMD with ATI.

A lot of corporate mergers result in better products and experiences for consumers.

The thing that worries me is that Live Aquaria/Diver's Den are tiny tidbits of what is changing hands here. I worry that they will be an after thought compared to the bigger and more profitable parts of DFS. Hope I'm wrong.

Yeap... they're not buying Live Aquaria or DD.

If your state has a sales tax and and a Petco, you will now have to pay sales taxes on your online purchases from Drs.

I'm going to wait & see what happens. I have a credit so probably after the holidays will use it. Everything comes down to the almighty $, if it goes down the toilet so do their profits.

Ill trust DD and LA as long as Kevin Kohen is in charge. If you guys have never had the the benefit of forging any sort of relationship with him here, or at confrences or emails, then you are missing out. Hes a trustworthy guy.

Greetings,
I would like to take a moment to respond and address some concerns posted in this thread.

Dr. Race Foster and Dr. Marty Smith have worked incredibly hard over the last 31 years, to build an incredibly successful business, which revolves around education, pet heath, and responsible pet ownership. The Petco mission is elevating the lives of animals and enhancing the connection people have with their pets, with a commitment to the highest standards of social responsibility, while continually striving to make things better for pets, people and the planet. Understanding each company's mission and goals are very similar, we feel this partnership and synergy is going to be beneficial to animals, pet owners, and aquarium hobbyists and enthusiasts alike.

I can assure everyone, my personal mission as the LiveAquaria Director is to take LiveAquaria.com to an even higher level than ever before. The continued expansion of our Aquaculture Coral and Marine Life facility in Rhinelander Wisconsin, home of the LiveAquaria.com Divers Den®, allows us to offer an even greater assortment of quality aquatic life shipped direct to your door.

Rest assured, Dr. Race Foster and I are not going anywhere, and will continue to operate Drs. Foster and Smith pet supplies and LiveAquaria.com as it's business as usual. Both Race and I are incredibly excited for the future and what lies ahead.

Kindest Regards,
Kevin Kohen

Thanks for the reply! I've only been here in Wisconsin since June when work decided they would like me here instead if eastern PA. In any case, I've been on both DD tours since arriving and have to say the facility is impressive and you guys do a fantastic job. Everyone is so knowledgeable and helpful and it's clear that you have a passion for what you do. I make the 2.5 hour trip from Appleton without hesitation knowing that your facility is my best bet to find what I'm looking for, know that it is healthy and we'll cared for, and that I'm going to learn something in the process. I hope those tours continue as I plan to go on every one while I'm here in Wisconsin. So thank you guys for all that you do.

All of that being said, I just don't agree that your motives and mission line up with Petcos. Maybe they are committed to change their practices. I hope that's the case and that they plan to learn from what you guys are doing. But you have to understand my extreme doubts. I had an interview years ago at a Petco store. After seeing their policies, realizing they all had to do with driving impulse buys and had no mention of the well fair of the livestock, I threw the interview. I couldn't bring myself to work for a place like that. Maybe they have changed, or maybe they will, but I have yet to see it.

Really I just hope you guys don't change what you are doing and how you do it. I respect what you do immensely and appreciate the knowledge I gain every time I get to set foot in your facility.

I totally respect that dfs posted in this thread to clear the air but I can't take seriously what you recited as Petco's mission statement. If that in fact was true the stores would not be in the shape some if not most are, especially the saltwater dept. Shoot they say it in the guarantee " no guarantee in any in store livestock purchases". I've heard good things about the online livestock part of the business but the way the stores are run and employees are are taught is disheartening.

The local to me Petco manager basically told me a while ago that corporate knows but won't let him change anything, basically it's cheaper to just let them die is what he was getting at without saying it.. I asked him why he couldn't use the meds that are on the shelf to save the fish or actually have lights to support the coral they bring in ( daylight T8 bulbs over the coral tanks =(.)

I hope what Kevin is saying is true but I am with the others and highly doubt it will not change but I don't think I'll stop shopping there until it actually affects me personally..
