It depends behaviorally. A blenny should be no problem. A zebrasoma tang might be an issue territorially.

Thank you for your wisdom. Yes they are the Halichoeres chrysus. So the Mandarin will have to wait. Just for my knowledge, which fish would be competing
with the Purple Tang for territory?

Two fish occupy the same ecological niche: One Spot Foxface and Coral Beauty Dwarf as they graze.

McCosker's Flasher Wrasse marginal tank size, really needs slightly larger tank

Thanks Steve!

Ok. So I have a ~50 gallon reef DT (36x18x18)with a 30 gallon sump. using about 30 pounds of LR with another 10 pounds of detox bloc (ceramic matrix).

Currently have a fire fish, two spot hogfish, neon goby, cleaner shrimp, maxima clam and various SPS and zoos/palys. I am interested in adding a Lori's Anthias (Pseudoanthias lori) to the mix as well as a Tail Spot Blenny (Ecsenius stigmata). Any issues with these fish?

No issues with Ecsenius stigmata; Pseudoanthias lori needs frequent feedings and normally requires a slightly larger tank

Here is what I'm planning on stocking my 40 breeder with. This tank will be sps with maybe some lps. I'm using a reef dynamics ins-100 skimmer.

2 O.Clownfish
Midas Blenny
Firefish (Purple or Helfrichi)
Royal Gramma
Banggai Cardinalfish
Hectors Goby
Maybe some type of wrase

Midas Blenny may nip fins of planktivores
Firefish (Purple or Helfrichi) introduce early
Royal Gramma
Banggai Cardinalfish be sure it is tank raised
Hectors Goby
Maybe some type of wrase very few wrasses are appropriate for this sized tank

A bit heavy on copepod eaters for tjhis sized tank

Which of these fish are planktivores? About copepods I was under the impression that none of these fish feed only on copepods. I'll look more into the hectors goby about food requirements.

Many fish eat copepods. Some, such as the Hectors goby get a large amount of their diet from grazing. Any fish which tends to eat out of the water column is a planktivore. Sometimes, the Midas Blenny will irritate small planktivores and has been known to nip at firefish and gobies.

steve, i have been watching some videos on youtube of marine bettas. LA says peaceful, reef safe although they *may* eat shrimp.

what are your thoughts on this fish as far as being a good community fish?

I am not an advocate of this fish in your type of tank. Calloplesiops altevelis, is also commonly known as a Comet. They are pretty but reclusive. They are very hardy but require a number of places to hide and prefers to linger in the underside of cliffs and overhangs where it can linger and await its next prey. Because it is a predator that grows to a seven or eight inch maximum captive size, the Marine Betta should be kept only in larger aquariums. In the home aquarium, it will not consume corals, but may likely dislodge corals as it darts after its next meal. It may eat any fish that will fit into its mouth. Crustaceans, being part of its natural diet, will likely be eaten. This Indo-Pacific native is an opportunist predator. It welcomes a diet of smaller live fish -- upon which it can prey with a sudden, unexpected burst of speed -- and frozen krill and other meaty prepared foods. Because "high input" fish are also "high output" fish, an excellent filtration and biological system should be in place prior to introduction. The Marine Betta should only be kept with other aggressive carnivores such as Groupers, Triggers, and Eels. Many people keep them, sometimes to their regret. Philosophically, I always advocate inhabitants that will not make your tank look small and where a peaceful coexistence is likely. Stress in fish caused by the dynamic tension of being potentially predated upon is not relaxing to watch.

thanks for the detailed summary! sure is a pretty fish but obviously it won't work for me. :)

Moving some fish around to improve my reef setup. 55gal 70 gal including sump.
Current list

Yellow Tang
Pair of ocellaris clowns
Diamond Goby
Coral Beauty
Lunar Wrasse (going as soon as I trap him)

I intend on ditching the CB and Wrasse for being nippers. Only really messin with my zoas but thats enough. Ive read Tangs and Foxfaces get along well but better if th Tang id added last. Is this advisable in a 55 gallon tank? If not any other compatable / colorful reef safe fish to suggest?
