I'm in Hicksville, but didn't fare nearly as well as Vinny. Power off 2am Sunday, and back on at 1pm Friday. That's 5 1/2 days, 131 hours! Saving grace was the generator in my RV, a 4kw Onan -- it ran non-stop the whole time. Had one extention cord plugged in one outlet in the RV, through a window and then at least 20 things in the house plugged into it!!! I was amazed one breaker in the RV was handling all of that.
I found Quagmire's post very interesting -- I definitely need to look into doing it like that, then I wouldn't have to run extention cords and multi-outlet "squids" all over the house.

Still waiting to get home.
Been stuck in Aruba since flight was cancelled due to Irene.
I bought a used Onan 4KW generator. It's a great little machine, and since it's 2 cylinders, it's nice and quiet.
Quagmire made a great suggestion, BUT although he did say that you have to flip the main breaker, he didn't say it loud enough. I can't stress the importance of that enough. If you backfeed through the main on your service panel, you could kill an innocent LIPA worker. Also, if you have your generator hooked up and the main on, when power comes back, you won't have a generator anymore.
