No, Ray Aronson... he's the project manager for the construction that is going on there.
I had emailed Christoph Pierre who came up in a google search as the Director of Marine Operations. His reply on Oct 22nd was:
"The public access seawater is not available as this time but will be available once the OSEB building contruction that you mentioned is complete. This construction is behind schedule but should be commencing next month. I'm not sure what the completion date is. Sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime."
Hopefully someone has a better contact with good information since seems like there is might be quite a long wait still if the construction is just starting.

For when the water is available again:
If anyone does not know, NSW should not be stored very long because the organics in the water are broken down by bacteria and you end up with nitrate, phosphate, but no organics. This is because the phytoplankton in the water cannot get the light it needs to multiply and consume the nitrate and phosphate.

I was at UCSB today got 30gal and the building is suppose to be finished in June 2013. If you fallow lagoon all the way down to where it says "authorized vehicles only" and I talked to the guys in the office and they said help your self.
I've stored UCSB water for months in dark gray containers with no isues. I think they do a good job at filtering the water. There is a big difference in their raw water holding tank and their filtered water holding tank. The raw one is full of all kinds of stuff growing while the filtered one is clean.
Since they us ethe water in their research labs, I don't think there is much left in the water.
Justin, did you get teh water from the "reef" building? Or from the old building where it used to be available to the public? Is the water available 24/7 down there?

It's was near the reef building, I went into where the collectors hangout near their boats. It's not 24/7 but m-f 7-4 but they do go out and collect so it may be hit and miss.

MASVC will have a field trip(in May) to their facility and get more details. The water has always been available near the R.E.E.F. but you would need someone working there to give you access to the hose for the filtered NSW.

OK, was just wondering if there may have been a new place to get the water since the old spot is STILL not available. Just a few years behind schedule.

Yes I suppose filtering would remove a lot of the organic particulates (although not the dissolved organics); however what would be the purpose? I thought the whole point of using NSW is to get the real life that it contains.
Unless, you just want "naturally" balanced ions.

Ya the collectors that are in the building by the reef building are pretty chill just ask them and they'll open it up and show you which hose to use it's labeled FSW filtered sea water. As long as they are there anyone is welcome to it.
I was up in the area on Saturday morning and had a little time to kill before I had to be at the airport. So I drove thru the campus. The new building is STILL being built. But there was a triatalon going on so I couldn't get down to the REEF to check it out.
