Who got this Magnifica from DD?

Nice pick up.
Reminds me of this magnifica on reefhotspot a couple years ago.

I owned that mag for close to a year. You guys are right, it never showed the green in my tank. However, it did have the brightest yellow tips of any mag I have ever seen. It still pains me to think about it. Even though it wasn't green, I wouldn't have referred to it as a common color morph. As stated earlier it had much more "pop" than other yellow tipped purple mags.

Mine look exactly like that pic with plenty of blue in the lighting. I'm confident that that is a color morph exactly like mine. Actually those pics look just like a top-down view of mine under around 14000K lighting.

Here's an overhead view of the anemone mentioned from reefhotspot which I purchased a few years ago. The shot is shortly after I recieved it, perhaps a week into ownership.

This is an upclose view of the same anemone. Notice that the anemone appears much more yellow from a regular viewing angle.

In person it was a very vibrant yellow not captured by my limited photography skills. However, one can get an idea of what different viewing/camera angles on the same anemone can create.

Ousnakebyte, I believe you are going to recieve a very beautiful specimen and I wish you the best of luck with it. It seems lately many threads on here have been really digging up some painful memories of anemones past for me. Between this thread and the multicolored haddoni thread it's like a buddy of yours reminding you about that great girl that was way out of your league that you let get away. Stop It Guys, I Can't Hardly Take It!

Well... the jig is up, the die is cast, the goose is cooked....

It was me. But it was an impulse buy... near the register, I SWEAR!

It is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday; I will be going home from work early, of course. I dearly hope it arrives in good condition. I have already cleared a spot with a flat rock for it*.

Cheers
Mike

*this is assuming that it is indeed a magnifica... ;)

Mike you probably don't want this anemone. You should give it to me :)

The tittle said it all. This is certainly a special Magnifica

Well... there *may* have been a little photo editing, or maybe it needs to "color up" OR... they gave me the wrong one... :spin2:

It came in late this morning on time. Here is what it looked like in the bag - mouth gaping pretty severely:

I set it up with a drip system for acclimation:

As of now (almost 9:30pm EST) it still has not attached to the flat rock I have for it. I'm a touch worried about this one. It had also not attached itself to the inside of the shipping bag like the one that I ordered from BZA about 6 months ago. (I still have that magnifica, and it is doing wonderfully).

Outlook for me is slightly pessimistic. :(

Here are a few recent photos - not quite as purple as we were led to believe but still very nice light tips:

I'll continue this thread with updates - good or bad.

Cheers

I know when I received a GBTA from LA it was not doing good, I told them I was going to remove it from the tank so it didnt crash my tank (it was really in bad shape). They refunded me with no problems, LA has very good customer service, just keep that in mind.

Lol, what you see is what you get huh? :D

Have you talked with LA about this? Looks like everyone is using halloween lighting and some photoshop nowaday.

I would suggest you provide good flow as soon as it attaches well enough to stay put on the rock. Indirect, but moderately high flow seems to be their preference.

They shipped him with a lot of water. How much oxygen did they have in the bag?

I've been at wholesalers when anemones came in wrapped in wet newspaper - out of the water. I always wondered what the best packaging method was - lots of water, little water, or no water? There are pros and cons to each...

i too think about that thattt... i had talked with someone who i never heard of shipping an anemone without water until this guy brought it to my attention he said (he runs a online site) he ships alot of nems sometime with alot less water..sometimes almost none... and he says he seems to have a good success rate with them.. although he mostly deals in LTA's / RBTA's..
we had this convo about 3 months ago.. since then ive done alot of thinking about that... maybe requesting less water in the bag.. but then in my eyes that gives the water more of a chance to become more pullted ... really fast..so i dont know..

My Mag from LA looked AWFULLL when i got it from LA, after i temp acclimated and drip acclimated SUPER long, put it in my sump with little to no flow and only pc lighting,,within 5 or so hours it looked amazing! placed in into my tank at night with lights off to give it time to attach with lower flow at nght in my tank and no lighting and by morning it was as good as gold...

I've also heard and read about anemones being shipped without water. Nicks387, the logic behind it is this: anemones can be found in the intertidal zone, out of the water for hours. During this time the anemone "shuts down" until the tide returns. From what I've read about this rationale, putting no more than a tablespoon or so of water in the bag keeps the anemone moist, but "dry" enough to stay in shut-down mode. Being in a bag of water, releasing waste and toxins seems to compromise many anemones to the point that they can't rally once added to the aquarium after shipping.

The bag was a little more than 3/4 full of water. I poured out about 1/2 liter to allow for the drip acclimation. I don't have a DO meter at home (I do at work, but not allowed to take it... :)), but I would love to test the DO in shipments like this.

In the past, Ammonia is always reading about 0.25ppm in shipments like this - but I assume that is to be expected.

I've seen carpets shipped in just a few spoonfulls of water too - I really don't know the best method. Hmmm.... perhaps a study is in order for someone!

The new mag is still not attached to its rock as of this morning. I have it "confined" with egg crate on the rock, so as to keep it from blowing around the tank and encourage it to attach. It has inflated with water nicely, and the mouth is no longer gaping, but... it needs to attach..... Then, I can get it to a spot with better current.

Re the colors - it definitely looks more purple than in the picture I posted above under actinics only - but what doesn't, eh? I run 250 watt Ushio 14K, which if you have not seen them in person, don't have a lot of blue like the Phoenix 14Ks do. But, I really don't care - H. mag is my favorite anemone, and I think they are ALL gorgeous! Difficult for me and my remedial photography skills to get a good picture under actinics.

I have learned that purple is in the eye of the beholder - especially in my case since I am partly colorblind (don't see transitions very well: blue->purple and red/green -> respective shade of brown, etc.).

Cheers
