How not to build a 750/1500 gallon build thread-Khaosinc 3/5/71-8/30/11

Hi Khaos,

I wonder if everyone lost their subscriptions in the RC update. It's very quiet in this thread.

What be the latest? Have you been able to figure out how you want to alter your water changing system? Has your upgraded cleaner crew been able to keep your tank in check?

yea, still waiting on Dell to send me my new computer, and can't upload pics untill then. 7-21 buisness days is a dang eternity. They are touchy enough about letting me loose on computers at work as it is.

Clean up crew is doing a very nice job, nice not to have to clean the veiwable sides of the tank more than once a week or so. The serpant star has actually been surprisingly active and visable. I usually see him every other day or so. Still haven't seen hide nor hair of the Dwarf angel. Hope he's in there somewhere alive. Hopefully there will be some money left over from my next check to add a half dozen or so shrimp/goby pairs. Then back to upgrading lighting and the like. I still want to add about 1000 watts of T-5's over the tank

I reduced my water change system to 55 gallon barrels for now. 55 gallons once a week is about a 20% change a month. I just don't have room for the 250 gallon tanks I wanted to use. I need to find some narrower and taller ones. I have such a light bio load for the moment that I think that is more than plenty. Slowly getting coraline everywhere, including the sump which just has 4 old 6500K t8 bulbs over it. Kind of surprised it would grow in that little light. Still not running an ATo either so thats a nightly process, about 5 gallons a day. I'm due for new filters AGAIN... sure can burn through them at that rate. I've covered the tank as much as I dare without running in to heat issues, and I'm hoping to avoid the need for a chiller.

the reason I am staying with T5s vs metal halide is the issues with heat and evaporation. I have trouble with humidity in my house as it is, and want to keep the tank as covered as possible. Metal halides would involve an uncovered taan, and more heat. As it is The tank stays between 78 and 80. I suspect with 5 400 watt MH lamps (or more for decent coverage) and keeping the tank uncovered my problems would be much worse than 5 gallons a day evaporation

Awsome thread just read it all. Glad to see you are doing well and feeling better. Will definantly stay tuned to see how the tank progresses. A feat in itself putting together a monster tank not to mention overcoming those health challenges. Two thumbs up my man! Now where are those mermaid pictures we were promised!

how quickly do people change their lighting schedules. I've been keeping mine fairly late as I was working some pretty erratic shifts but I think they have finally settled down to the point that I can adjust my lighting so that I can actually see my tank in the morning as well. Do you just change them, ro do you do it more slowly. likke 1 hour a day or somiething.

I just change mine to suit when I was able to watch my tank. No waiting or timing issues. But it was not a radical change, just an hour or so later or earlier...

I have changed it as much as 3-3.5 hours in a swing. I mean the corals tolerate a 3 day black out pretty well, I think they can adjust times too. I tend to be pretty cavalier about that stuff too. I think simple organisms are more tolerant than some folks give them credit for. JMO

When I switched from working days to nights, I added/subtracted one hour on each end every 2 or 3 days until I reached my target schedule.

I really want to make it over to your neck of the woods one day to see this tank. I live in Tri-cities, shouldn't be more than 4 hours or so away. Either way, thanks for doing such a big favor for this community. You have definitely earned yourself a top spot in the record books.

Maybe you could make a few bucks by charging admission like the Seattle Aquarium does :D
