I am an old salty dog who is coming back to the reef. My first reef tank was about 15 years. It was a ******* 125 tall with a built-in wet/dry. Since wet/dry soon passed from the scene, I removed the bio-ball set-up and used the area as a kind of sump for carbon sock bags and other occasional needs. The coil for my chiller was also there as well as the probes for my Neptune Octopus controller. I bought my first live rock from Jon Warner way before there was a Warner Marine; we unpacked the whole 100 pounds in his kitchen to make sure that it was OK. As I became a bit more knowledgeable, in addition to my 4 VHOs, I added two 400 watt halides. Some controller, I forget the name, turned all the lighting on with a lunar cycle. I added a calcium reactor about a year later as my SPS took off. About 8 years ago, I had my first major disaster. The Neptune failed at the same time the heater stuck in the on position. It cooked the whole tank. I started over. 5 years ago, prior to an extended trip to Germany, I tore the whole think down again. That brings me to today. I am gearing my tank up again. Boy do I have a lot to learn about contemporary methods!

New

New

I am new to the hobby from an owning a saltwater tank. I have spent many years reading about fish and visiting aquarium stores and attractions. I am finally ready to take the responsibility myself at managing my own tank. I met two gentlemen at Aquarium World Saturday that told me about this website. I love sitting and watching fish swim for hours. Now I hope to be able to do this from my own home.

I would try craigslist.com or www.kijiji.com for your area. If you are patient you can find a deal that includes everything --even the live rock from someone who wants to get out of the hobby.

I am glad you are not rich--it should be easier to adapt to a reef keeper:lol:

Hi everyone.

Magnus from Sweden has arrived.

I dont know if its possible to be more of a newbie than me.

I've spent about 13-14 years in the reptile hobby, mainly focusing on snakes of ALL sorts.
Reptiles and SW(husbandry) have some similaritys I believe. It takes alot of preparation and reading before you are ready to bring home the animals. I've just about started reading about reef keeping and wont be getting a tank for at least a few months, maybe even a year. I will probably spend a lot of time on this forum and I'm confident that I can learn ALOT here :)

Thats it for now.

Magnus

hey magnus, i have a friend and a fellow reefer i know from sweden, great to have you aboard the rc bus, my buddy is Ricke, hes a great guy, i will pass your details onto him if you like so you swedes can discuss reef related issues, welcome again

Hi guys my name is Christopher I'm new to the hobby about 1.5 years. I have a 3 month old 75g tank at 36"l x 15.5"w x 31.5"h swim only at the moment looking to convert to reef tank. Currently I have equipment as follows
2 maxi jet 400
Ehime 2215 filter
Corallife light not sure what model just know will need new one for reef system (any suggestions)
I was wondering what you guys think about replacing the maxi jets with octopus cv-101b or cv-201b powerhead's will this be to strong of a current for the coral, they claim to be wave makers but from what I can tell they do not swivel automatically. Also I will be adding 1 or 2 overflows to the tank pumped in to a 20g sump with a live sand bed and live rock with a protein skimmer the octopus DNWB-110 needle wheel. Will this be enough water flow and filtration to maintain a quality tank. Thank you for any help in advance.

New to this hobby. My brother in law just gave me his 55g tank and stand. I've always been amazed with reef tanks since I was a kid and saw them at the doctor's offices. I am completely new to this and I'm hoping to get some good info by lurking on here. In advance, I would just like to apologize for the dumb questions. ; )

the preferred rate of flow for a 75 gal tank is 1500-3000 gph.
Two koralia #4's would give you a flow of 2400 gph or two koralia #3's a flow of 1700 gph.
Koralia pumps are cheap, dependabale and give you turbulant flow rather than laminar or straight flow.

You did not mention live rock---the most important biological filtration in your system. You should have about 75-80 lbs of it for your tank.

That said quality live rock and a protein skimmer make an excellent filtration system.
suggest you run only carbon in the canister filter which will really give you crystal clear water.

there are no dumb questions on here. However alot of reefers make dumb mistakes by not asking questions before they act;) :D

Hello everyone, my name is Jason and I have roughly 2 years experience in this hobby. I started out with Brackish Puffers and eventually got hooked into reef aquaria. I have a 55gal display tank w/ 20gal long show refugium. I finally took the step of removing the HoB filters since I have a better understanding of water circulation and nutrient export(thanks to you guys). My wife keeps clownfish and I'm into mushroom corals. I just recently sold my 35gal tall brackish setup so I can be 100% focused on my reef. I'm really big into DIY stuff and will hopefully upgrade in the future.

I've been around for a few months lurking and learning, but I decided its time to actively get involved. This seems like a great community and I'm glad to be here. :)

by being proactive and posting yourself you will find you even learn more.
I would start your own build thread and post some pictures there of your progress

Hi I'm Noman and I've been a freshwater hobbyist for all my life. And conquering the FW scene I think I should give Marine a try.Currently I've a planted tank and a 25 G empty (which I wish to make FOWLR.
I'm here for some answers as I've been reading about SW for a few months and the more I read the more confusing it is becoming .

hi-norman :) welcome aboard buddy, nice to see you here, its not complecated really, although there can be a lot to learn initially, admittedly we are all learning still everyday but the basics are just that, have a look at waterkeepers sticky for newcommers at the top of the forum under this thread and its will be a great start

Hi everyone I'm Marty. I am new to the reef tank hobby. So far it has been both overwhelming and a lot of fun. I have a 3ogal now and I am already thinking about and looking forward to future upgrades:)
It seems the more I learn about this I realize there is so much more I don't know. But I'm sure that gap will narrow in time.

Cheers

IMO the gap does not narrow with time--it remains constant;)

Hi! I'm Elly. I'm a certified florist and after going to college for art and design for a little while, I've naturally combined my love of kinesthetic art, animal husbandry, and horticulture into an avid fishkeeping obsession. I have had several freshwater tanks over the years (I have a 10 gallon with 2 calico fantails and 2 siamese algae eaters and a 29 gallon with breeding German Super Blue Rams, 8 mystery snails, and SEVERAL MTS set up at the moment) and now I've been bitten by the saltwater bug. My boyfriend (who was the one who started begging for a reef tank ["their so pretty!"]) shipped out to Iraq a little over a month ago for a year long deployment, and my dad (who's only 53) came home fro the hospital the same day after having his stomach removed due to cancer. He has just started chemo so my goal is to get this tank set up so we have something nice and peaceful to watch other than TV since he spends so much time at home now. I have an empty 46 gallon bow front sitting in my living room on a stand that needs to be modified so it can house a sump, with Black Tahitian Moon sand in it and a Coralife 36 inch Professional Series Aqualight Pro HQI Metal Halide Fixture with Compact Fluorescents and Lunar Lights on it's way to my house. The main reasons I joined this site is 1) I need the rest of the equipment to get the tank up and running and I'd rather not spend $700 for new equipment when I can buy used for a much better price, 2) I'd like to know what kind of corals will thrive in a tank the size I have with the lighting I have (I love zoas, torch, birdsnest, hammer, Idaho Grape, red cap monti, and ricordia (pretty much any coral that isn't brown or will grow huge and or take over the tank), and 3) just general networking for future trades of frags, etc and I want to know: what are and what are the difference between SPS and LPS corals and how do you care for them?

My ultimate goal is to have a clownfish (or 2), an anemone for them, a firefish, a blue/yellow damsel, one of those tiny canary gobys (I think that's what they are, but I'm not sure. I know they only get about 1" long and perch on rocks), a blue mandrinfish (I'm well prepared to wait until my tank can support it), a jawfish (I don't care what color), MAYBE a yellow tang (if I can find one that seems peaceful and lazy), a few cleaner shrimps, maybe a clam, other various clean up crew (no hermit crabs. I've heard they are trouble), and various corals. My own little piece of the reef!

Any info and help is greatly appreciated!!!
