If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Howdy everyone!

Virgin reefer here - I had a freshwater tank as a young kid and enjoyed it a bunch. I decided that I wanted to try my hand at reefing, it seems to be a very relaxing and rewarding hobby (expensive too, but my other hobbies are cheap :-))

I just got a used 46-gal bow-front tank from my LFS, complete with live sand/rock, skimmer, and powerhead - almost everything I need to start.

I'm just lurking all over the forums right now trying to learn as much as I can, and I'll probably go on a buying spree at Barnes and Noble after work today.

I really can't wait to start - I woke up this morning, not even 24 hours after dumping water into the tank and saw a fan worm (about 1" across) on one of my live rocks - it's incredible how fast life springs up in these habitats!

Anyway, just saying 'hi' to the forums :) Hopefully I'll be seeing some folks at the next Chicagoland Reef Club meeting.

Hello everyone. My name is Maverick. I'm 23 years old and looking to learn about the saltwater hobby. My first step is choosing my first aquarium/tank and if anyone could give me advice I sure would appreciate it. Just a heads up I'm really pressed for space at the moment so a larger aquarium is gonna be hard to fit in what space I have availible. Right now I'm looking at the Biocube 9 & Biocube 14 gallon aquariums. Any advice on those would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks!

hi-maverick :)

you will get mixed views about tank size, id suggest a 75 gallon tank for you first tank myself, however as your really limited for space go for the 14 gallon, as your a rookie the more water the better for stability reasons.

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this board, but not totally new to the hobby. I used to have a 125-gallon FO setup about 7 years ago that I had to give up. I've missed my fish ever since, and with the support of my bf I'm going to start getting back into the hobby again.

So the boring stuff - I'm 31, I'm a technical writer and part-time grad student, and I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone here! :)

hi-back at ya, its great to see you here, glad your getting back into the hobby

Hi everyone! I am new to the forum and very new to the Saltwater adventure! My husband grew up with saltwater tanks and knows a good amount of stuff. I have found my self reading a lot on the forum and thought it was time to join! My son is the main reason for starting the hobby, he is only 3 1/2 but has been fascinated with marine life and fish sense he was a baby. He loves going to the aquarium and Sea World and is now ecstatic about his new tank! We have a 20 gallon long tank that has been running for a week, if all goes well we will be upgrading in about 6 months to 50 or 75 gallons. We have just added two chromis to the tank because our levels have tested well. They are sort of the sacrificial fish in case anything goes wrong even thought I am routing for survival! We have about 10 lbs of live rock and we bought a new lighting fixture, because we have a goal to have coral in a few more weeks. My son is very excited about getting "Nemo"! We are also going to be getting a Banded coral shrimp, a firefish and maybe a dwarf angelfish. The local Saltwater specialty stores have been very helpful and haven't pressured us into any crazy expenses, and for that I am thankful. I am open to any advice or constructive criticism, I am trying to post a pic but unsure how.
Well any way, I am happy to be a part of the forum and I am sure I will have plenty of questions as the days go on!

hi :) id forget the dwarf angelfish, especially if you get a clown and fire fish, with the 2 chromis that will be 4 fish and enough for a 20 gallon, also even though its a dwarf they need swimming space and most are not reef safe, so your new corals will be expensive food

Thank you for the advice! I was told a flame angel or a bicolor would be ok, as long as we were careful...thoughts? Also any suggestions about the best coral to start with?

flame angels are hit and miss, some are ok others are not reef safe, considering your planning on a clown and fire fish plus the 2 chromis i wouldn't add a dwarf as well, 20 gals is too small for it as well as the 4 others, as for corals , id suggest some softies, mushrooms, toadstool , polyps etc, good hardy beginners corals which should do well

hey! my name is jeff and i'm very new and very excited! this is my first saltwater tank but i have several planted freshwater already running. i'm from outside of chicago so if any locals are on here and want to show me their tank or help me set up mine, that would be great!

Hello, I am also new here (lurker mostly) I had a 100 gallon FO tank for years, years ago. I had good success at the time when information was very limited and the hobby was not as advanced as it is today. So after the kiddos have been raised and I can settle into a hobby with more time and attention I have been severely obsessed..lol with setting up a tank. My situation is that I am currently unemployed and doing this Lucy style;-) I have managed to buy sell and trade up and have been doing so for a couple of months...I have three tanks currently and have yet to put water in one..sad...I need advice and help..I have been reading and am information overloaded. I have acquired a variety of goodies and would like someone to kind of walk me through the best set up using what I have...any one game:-)?
First question: I acquired a tank that had about a 5-6" sand bed on a plenum with window screen layered throughout and a lot of rock. this tank was bone dry when I got it except the sand in the wet dry is still wet and the guy put a sock and some other form of bio in a plastic bag.the question is: do I wash the rocks and sand before using it? Will the bacteria be beneficial or detrimental?
Thanks so much, I love this site..I joined many and have all but deleted most as this is the best one:-)

Hello Paul.thank you ..nice to see you. As you can see I still have not gotten a tank going yet...lol...I have all the stuff...even multiples of some things..

New to the Hobby. Going to buy a 120 gallon tank with everything that is needed to start up a reef tank including 3x5 gallon buckets of salt, tank, sump, powerheads, skimmer, and lighting that can support soft coral but am looking to upgrade that eventually because I'm going to want to do some more photosynthetic marine life. I'm very excited but I know that it's going to be a learning experience and I'll need all the help that I can get! :)

Hi all. I've posted a few times in the Mantis Shrimp board, but figured i should introduce myself to the rest of RC. My name's Colin, and i've got a 20 gallon minireef with Neogonodactylus wennerae (as of thursday) and a few fish and corals.

Just got the first post up with videos on a blog i set up for the wennerae at Stomatopods.blogspot.com

Thanks for all the valuable posts, guys.
