Hello all, my name is David and I joined this fourm to learn some tricks and get some feedback on ideas. I have been researching on starting up a reef tank. I have done FOWLR for about 8 years and then recently moved to Florida. I sold my old glass tank (45gl) and will be getting a new 65 or 85gl tank.

Names Anthony. i've been into freshwater for quite some time and decided to convert to saltwater. i have a 29gallon tank with a DIY 10 gallon sump tank 30 pounds of live sand, approx 15 pounds of live rock ( i know i need more) and two submersable pumps. just bought a t5 light for it and the tank has been in Cycle for 3 weeks as of yesterday. i will post a thread now containing photos of my tank so far

Hello, my name is Mike. I live in sunny S Fla, well sunny till about 2 - 3pm then rain out of no where!! haha
Anyway I had a 55g when I lived with my GF about 2 yrs ago. I loved that 55g so much i bought a custom 60x18x24 glass tank with center overflow. Thank god I waited to set it up till I got out of that crazy place! LOL
But I am ready now and I just purchased a 30g refugium, UV Sterilizer, Aqua Medic Protein Skimmer and I have 5 T12 VHOs running off of one 430 and one 660 ice cap ballast.
My plan is to do a FOWLR tank. I want a good amount of rock maybe 150 to 200 lbs. I want some clowns (and some anemonies for them) , tangs and maybe a couple other fish. But my best friend wants to get a small shark. I plan to arrange the rock so there are a bunch of holes and swim paths at the bottom of the tank. Is this possible? Is there a shark I can get that will work good in this tank? My friend thought maybe a Bamboo Shark or a Marbled Cat Shark. Thank you for all your help with this!!!!

I also have another question about setting up the live rock but I will post another thread on that one

for that size tank you will need a small shark but it will eventually outgrow the tank. as for the rock: you can aquascape the tank anyway you want, caves and what not will look awesome

your always better off going with the larger tank. make sure you take pictures and post your experience here.

Welcome and hopefully you will post pictures as you go!

As far as a shark in your tank i would suggest a Brownbanded Bamboo Shark! They are awesome critters! I currently have a baby hammerhead that im housing for a buddy and it's growing fast... At any rate the banded bamboo shark is a pretty small shark. From my calculations your tank is roughly 110 gallons and that should be sufficent, but remember they will eat any crustaceans you add... I used to have a banded bamboo shark that i bought as an egg and he hatched with 10 days of getting him! He was roughly 10 inches at 2 years of age and then a buddy bought him from me and now he lives happily in his 286 gallon built in tank in his game room.

They sleep during the day and are very active at night! I used to turn on some moon leds at night to watch him! Those are probably the easiest shark to keep, but read up before you do anything!!! It pays off! "Aquarium Sharks & Rays; An Essential Guide to Their Selection, Keeping, and Natural History" by Scott W. Michael is an awesome and informative book!

Thank you for the warm welcome. I have read up a lot on the Brownbanded Bamboo Shark. It seems that is the way I will go. And in a couple of years if it seems to big for my tank then I can pass it on to someone else.
Also like i previously mentioned. I have VHO lighting. Someone told me that i should get rid of it and get newer stuff because they are no good. Were they just trying to get me to buy something from them? I have a 430 ice cap running 2 bulbs and 1 660 ice cap running 3 bulbs. I will do 3 daylight and 2 actinic. is that enough light for some corals and anemonies??

Please don't try to be a sponge as most hobbyist need some exposure to air. That type of exposure for a sponge usually ends up badly.

That is quite a stocking list for a small, new tank. How are things going? Hope you are doing fairly large water changes.

Sounds like your tank is really stocked well. How much live rock do you have in it.

Thx for the warm welcomes! Yea I know I'm kinda overstocked atm. Params are find and I test daily. I do a 20% WC weekly. I really need to invest in an RO/DI unit, I know. The Clarkii most likely wil be finding a temp new home at a buds place...OceanParadise...you guys may be familiar with him. Anyways...great to be here!
