If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

New here. We have an 8 gallon nano, but are transitioning to a 56 gallon (Perfecto 56) that I purchased used from our marine LFS. Here's a pic of a new one: (it's a "column" tank due to space limitations): http://www.elmersaquarium.com/Tank_Column_Tank.htm

As soon as we have the new tank cycled we'll move over the critters.

Is there a stocking sticky somewhere?

Here is what we have right now:

1 false percula
2 crabs (one red, one blue banded)
2 snails (trocus)
1 slate pencil urchin

I would like to eventually add (when we get to the 56 gallon set up):

1 Coral Beauty
1 Sand Goby
1 Blennie (maybe)

Then..... down the road (once we've got a good growth going-- although I'm moving our year old-- very pretty with coraline-- live rock to our new tank so that should help), we would like to have a red or blue starfish.

I would love some input into how this sounds for stocking.

Thoughts??

Jill in Phoenix-- Happy to be here! :-)

that list looks great Jill. The coral beauty should keep all the algae on the rocks to a minimum.
How have you found the urchin--usually they are responsible for eating corraline algae.

I suggest that you increase your live rock to 56 pounds and let it cycle before adding any more fish to the 56 gallon.

Oh, yes, we'll be adding a lot of live rock, live sand (nano doesn't have sand), and will wait until we are fully cycled to move everyone over and then slowly transition with a new fish every now and then. I just know that the clown and pencil urchin will eventually need more space (plus nitrates have been an issue in the nano) so the 56 gallon column is perfect for all of us (hopefully).

The urchin has been peacful and well behaved so far. I want to maybe have a mushroom coral in the new tank, but I'm thinking she'll eat it. I tried to add some razor algae and she munched it! So we'll probably not be having much greenery except maybe some spaghetti algae, which the blue crab seems to enjoy eating, but goes through it slowly. Anyway, the urchin does graze on the rocks, but they are still purple-ish and quite pretty. It's been a year and so far so good! We're excited about our 56 gallon.

:fun2:

Urchins are algae eaters---I have had huge mushrooms in my tank with urchins--none of them have ever munched on a coral

since mushroom frags are very cheap you will be able to experiment yourself with a small frag.

Hey guys,

New to RC, actually came to Reef Central after spending alot of time on Melevsreef.com's sump info for my new 72G bowfront tank. It's almost finished cycling, and I look forward to the new community!

New to RC. Came here via the Atlanta Reef Club. Great site with a lot of info, figured it was time to join up.

Hello ladies and gentlemen. I am an official newbie, both to the forums, and to the hobby. You guys have what seems like an endless supply of knowledge on these forums, which I will be reading until my eyes actually fall out. Just wanted to take the opportunity to introduce myself.

What's up RC? I've been reading the site for about three months but I haven't posted anything yet. I bought my first tank about a year ago, and now I'm an addict. I started with a 12g AP, which I still have up and running. Since then I've bought a 34g Solana which has been up for about 8 months. I most recently bought a 180 AGA reef ready, but I still need quite a few things before I can start to set it up. I will try to get some pics up as soon as I can.

Hey Everyone, I had signed up here last year never dropped in and said Hey-

I have a 75 gallon that I currently spend way to much time working on, tweaking this and that.
I'll post up some pics once I figure out how.

I am not an addict, I really hate this stuff and only go on here to punish myself.

Hello everyone!

I also spent lots of time on melevsreef, followed by lots of lurking here, and finally decided it was time to join and ask questions... and of course help with my *very* limited experience if at all possible.

New to saltwater! (450 gallon)

New to saltwater! (450 gallon)

I have a 450 gallon tank w/ hamerhead pump , 120 gallon sump and stand.

What else do I need for a fish only tank? I was thinking black live sand and some live rock.

I know I need a protien skimmer, lights and heater and/or 1 hp chiller. Any suggestions?

Also has anybody used those aquaripure nitrate filters?

thanx.
