My first attempt at Macropharyngodon kuiteri. The tank currently has a large bipartitus male, 2x meleagris, a negrosensis and a geoffroyi.

Anyone have experience with kuiteri? What is the track record with them? Do they have a higher or lower mortality rate?

This one is eating well and socializing well.

Nice fish Pylos.

I have a pair of them as you may know. It's been about a year or more.

I absolutely love them.

Here is the male.

And the female.

Thanks Bean.

Brad - that male is killer. I had a choice between male and female and *almost* went for the male, but my bipartitus male wouldn't be too happy I'd imagine.

Well, holy $%#@@ I just stopped by my LFS as they get shipments in Tuesday after noon and they know I'm on the look out for any kind of Leopard. They said their distributor has listed a larger male and two smaller females!!! I told the LFS to try and grab all three if they can. I'm really excited.

edit: M. kuiteri is what I'm talking about they may be able to get me

On another note I'll have some other good news tomorrow....

Please excuse my horrible camera skills but decided to get some pictures posted while I have the chance and will give a detailed update tomorrow hopefully on my 6 week experience so far with these beauties. 2 M. bipartitus and 1 M. geoffroyi

Have to say these leopards are a roller coaster ride that you don't want to get off of. Picked up the Potters (~2.5") and the smaller Bipart(~1") from my LFS first about 6 weeks ago and then the very next day they had a larger female Bipartitus(~2") come in and I snatched it up too. I just hope my early success so far continues and they don't just mysteriously disappear. I have to say I am very lucky to have a quality LFS that just opened up recently to fill a void that my area was greatly lacking.

My main DT setup is a 180g, ~150lbs rock, 2-4 inches of Caribsea special grade sand, some LPS/SPS, 2xTunze 6105's(7096 controller), Reefbrite LEDs, 40g sump w/ ~700gph return, more live rock, SRO-3000 skimmer, Dolomite RRUGF in sump, lime water ATO, and dose vinegar. That's pretty much it. I was running a 55 for a few years and just moved everything from it to the 180 a few months ago.

I actually didn't put them right into the DT. I know this isn't recommended throughout this thread and don't want to say not too. I just didn't and don't with everything that is wet. I did put in the effort though into setting up a QT appropriate for leopards and didn't do my standard QT procedures. I setup a 29g with 3" of special grade sand, 20lbs of liverock from my sump, sponge filter w/ maxijet 900, cheap t8 light, and a a couple koralia nano's.

I set the light on a timer to start up at 5am and turn off at 3pm and slowly adjusted it every day to my display tanks lighting schedule. I made sure they were all eating and then went through two treatments of prazipro. The first day the potters and smaller bipart dived in the sand right away but the larger bitpart stayed out right away but periodically will go a day with out seeing her. I thought the potters was a goner as it either stayed in the sand or only came out when I wasn't home but never saw it for a good week. Also, its mouth was receded showing it's white almost beak like look. I read in this thread that is not a good sign at all and a death warrant. I got to see the smaller bipart 2 days after introduction. I was a little nervous about the larger female as it looked like it may have had a little lump in it's belly. The potters is still an early riser before the lights turn on and early to bed before my lights start ramping down.

I setup an autofeeder with NLS 1mm pellets and set it to feed 4 times a day a small amount. I also have an in tank brine shrimp hatchery that I have constantly going so they get baby brine snacks. I also feed frozen twice a day, as soon as I get home and about 2 hours after that. During QT I had my wife do it until the lighting schedule matched up with my DT as she works at home. I feed a various assortment of frozen cubes which the list includes San Fransisco Bay (Carnivore Cuisine, Emerald Entree, Marine Cuisine), Hikari (mysis, spirulina brine, krill), and PE (mysis, cyclopeeze).

I found a mix of results in what they wanted to eat and started with just eh single ingredients. The potters instantly liked the NLS pellets the other two didn't start out very interested in it. The Potters didn't like PE mysis but did like the Hikari mysis. The other two liked both types of mysis. They all loved the Hikari krill/spriulina brine, and PE cyclopeeze. The potters and the smaller bipart liked the SFB marine cuisine and all liked the Carnivore cuisine. By the end though they all were eating everything I put in there which in my opinion is because they learned to eat something different from watching the other fish eat what they didn't at first. IF that makes any sense. I didn't try the emerald entree until the very end and they each picked out what they wanted.

I really would like to believe they made it this far due to the setup and feeding. I really tried to keep it was stress free as possible. They didn't have to compete with other fish, light cycle was slowly adjusted, tried everything food wise often, and prazipro. The mouth on the potters is almost completely healed now probably with help from the diet and the lump is gone on the larger bipart which probably was helped from the prazipro.

About three days ago I added them to the display tank and they haven't skipped a beet. They seem to be waking up and going to bed just as they did before and each have found a spot to dive into. I haven't noticed any aggression with them or any of the other fish and feeding habits are still the same. We'll see how the next year goes. I want to keep adding to my collection and like I posted above really hope to have at least one kuiteri soon.

Oh yeah, and it looks like the smaller bipart is changing colors already since the time I got her. I would have thought the larger one would change to a male? I did read a post by Steve that there are some leopards that are actually born male if I understood the post properly?

Nice pictures Jason.

I just wanted to take a minute and share my enthusiasm for someone who could possibly relate to or understand how big of a deal this is!!! :bounce3::bounce3: :celeb3::celeb3:

I introduced the three M. bipartitus wrasses yesterday morning and left the lights off all day yesterday and they went right into the sand.

This afternoon I came home from work with the radiums on and ALL THREE WRASSES were out and swimming about picking at the rocks!!!!!

I'm so stoked and just living on cloud 9 right now! Within 24 hours they were out and about. I couldn't believe it so I quickly thawed some frozen food.

I fed the tank PE mysis, blood worms, cyclopeeze, and some live brine and they were eating the frozen food too!! I'm so happy right now I can't even explain it.

BIG UPS to the guys over at PIA! :celeb3:

There doesn't seem to be any aggression or anything from the other tank mates but I'll continue to watch the tank and see.

I snapped a few pictures with my iphone so excuse the poor quality but I didn't want to bring out the heavy duty stuff on their first day in the tank:

as above mentioned leave the box out , to much stress for sure .
AfricaOffroad ~~~~ please box up a half dozen of them bad boys and send em over here ,they are cool looking . how do they interact with other fish ?

Sorry, had to reregister. Was previously AfricaOffroad, Forgot my password and cant seem to get admin to repond to resend it to me.

If you ever visit this part of the world, let me know, I'm sure we could slip a few into your hand luggage:beer:

I still have one in my FO tank, its pretty mellow and a little bit timid. Was fairly large when I caught it, maybe 8cm, took a while for it to begin to feed. Partly why my bipartitus managed to harrass the small one in my Reef tank. Funnily enough, this little green guy ate very quickly.

My experience, the smaller the wrasse, the quicker they adapt to tank food.

my 3some have had the largest since Jan all 3 i got from my lfs the first they had in for about two weeks and the others i got still in the bag. they went right into my tank no qt with the lights off. they all hunt for pods and will take frozen and nori but the love H20 Life Reef Caviar. the tank is a 220 with fuge

Nice trio cas. That one looks tiny next to that frag.

My LFS got a nice shipment of Potters they received from a collector in Hawaii. Three nice looking ones at 3" and one large one at 5" but not looking to good but all ate some mysis while I was there. They all have this nice burnt orange color. I was so tempted to get one but I need to save the money for those Kuteri wrasses. He didn't get them in this week as their distributor said a couple fish they were going to send weren't looking to good and the LFS told them to hold their order to see if they all can make it. I guess its QM.

gobymasters;first read this tread and you will find that they are somewhat challenging if not difficult and it will also lead you through their specific requirements so that you will have a positivr experience with them . the common leopards are all close in price so thats not an issue .
