Sorry for your loss Sounds like something was right with her from the start. They are certainly sensitive fish, so you are not alone in losing one. While your sand is a little on the courser side, it should not have prevented her from diving in. If you ever do try another, I would recommend setting up a QT with fine sand, and plenty of live rocks to hunt for pods. The lighting schedule should match your DT. Treat for Prazi after it is eating prepared foods well. Then use an acclimation box for at least one day, releasing it just before lights out.

Perhaps your substrate has solidified or hardened due to some calcification of sorts. Try sticking your fingers through it is it hard like cement or is it loose

It has not solidified. I vacuum it pretty regularly during water changes and my Scooter has no problem burying himself at night.

I agree Evolve, she must have been in a weakened state from the start that was just not apparent through observation at the store.

I am thinking about moving on to my next choice of Wrasse. A Laboutei fairy.

Laboutei can be aggressive...there are a lot of other beautiful wrasses to choose from

I am open to suggestions. Right now the tank has:

A pair of Picasso Clowns
Midas Blenny
Tailspot Blenny
Red Scooter Blenny
Randall's Goby
Carpenter Wrasse
Yellow Banded Possum Wrasse

Lol I haven't had a fish yet that wasn't aggressive. Clowns are aggressive tangs are aggressive and so are blennies wrasses anthias so forth and so on.

A little update for mutt black leopard. She is doing quite well eating great still in quarantine. I treated with paracide-d after the first week to ensure no internal parasites. No negative side effects at all. I plan to do a ttm prior to adding her to the tank.

I have a bit of an issue with the ones that have been established in my main tank for quite some time now. Those include a male & female meleagris, a female? ornate, & a female bipartitus. The male meleagris has began trying to kill my bipartitus. This happened some time ago but they settled their dispute after a couple days & then ignored either for months. This time it is much worse. Relentless chasing & to the point that the bipart has been buried for a few days straight now. I see her getting harassed for a couple minutes early when lights first comes on. But she is forced into the sand. Can't get food to her at all. Nothing I can do. Tank too big to catch either&I know a trap won't work for them. Very bummed, I'm pretty sure this will be the end for her. I'm assuming she must have tried to turn male. Idk what else would cause this. They've been together for about 10 months now I would say.

Also makes me even more reluctant to add the black one.

Update:

A few days ago the male meleagris seemed to have lost interest in the bipartitus a little bit and is letting her out to eat. Now there is a little chasing going on but she seems fine and is now back to normal basically. Strange, I really thought she was a goner because I've never seen him so intent on harassing her.

Well, I decided to give the Leopard wrasse another try. The Local PETCO had two came in Tuesday. Both seem very healthy, fat and without injury. One dove for the sand bed after been out a little. One stay out and pecking on the rock already. I bought the one that stay out although she was a littel thinner and color wise does not have as nice color IMO, but still very healthy and beautiful. 10 mins after she goes in my tank she already start to hunt for food. Went to sleep last night and up again out all day today. I could not be any happier. Now only if she stay away from those carpets in my tank

Good luck, but carpets and Wrasses generally don't mix, whether anemones or flooring...

My first Leopard lasted 4 years and killed when I was working in the tank and spook him into the carpet. My second Leopard lased about 10 days. He was only about 1.5 inches or so. I got both of these when they were only about 1.5 inches. Thi son is about 2.5 inches.
One or two more did not make it right away. Dive in the sand and never seen again.

Leopards are rapidly becoming my favorite fish. My male Bipartitus has taken to sleeping in the sand right next to the front glass. As soon as the lights go off, he does a leisurely swim along the length of the tank just above the bottom and then, poof, he's gone in a small cloud of sand. Really very cool!

you dropped them right in DT from a petco system?
iv'e never seen a petco system that wasnt infested with ich.
