local tropical reports

i did dive it once last year. i don't remember it being too shallow. the bottom was rather bare though, it lacked the character of the bottom on the other side.

High tide at the bridge is 9:11 AM tomorrow. My usual routing is to be there early enough to gear up and be in the water about 20 to 30 minutes before high tide. I'll spend time in the lee of the bridge's rockpile (west side of the brige) while swimming out, spend time off the end in the deep water during slack and then head in on the lee side of bridge (east side) to get a nice hour long dive. Depending on early I get up, I might be over there myself in the morning.

All depends on the wind?
Thats why night diving is better. The winds are uaually calm and with a good light you can see 10 to 12 ft! Plus it's a lot easier to catch fish while they are sleeping. It's only spooky going in the water until you get under the surface :0

Actually it's tonight the wind is supposed to pick up, and still be pretty gusty in the morning. Northwest wind should have things fairly calm at the bridge, but might have some silt stirred. The recent north east winds really stirred up the bay, and that silt load is likely still suspended. Had about a whopping 2 feet on Wednesday evening.

Around the bridge pilings the depth runs 10-15ft. Along the bulkhead is shallow enough, but probably not worth the drive when you have FI inlet close by.

Picked up a dozen spotfins yesterday. They were everywhere, so were the snowy groupers. Also saw two small Rock Hinds (grouper), but they were too tucked into small crevices to get out. Was working on trying to catch a surgeon fish on top of one rockpile, but some yahoo with a scooter buzzed right over top of me and spooked the fish as well as kicking up a dust storm :uzi:

I know its been a while since anyone posted in this forum but i was wondering if anyone still collects tropicals in LI? Havent seen any posts about this year or last year.
I've collected around bablylon ny 3 times this year so far ... and this is what ive caught so far...

lots of pipefish
lots of yellow fin groupers
lots of barracudas
lots of pinfish
3 seahorses
a few black groupers
1 goatfish
1 baby spiny puffer

probably some others im forgetting... but no butterflyfish or angels or damsels.... still on the quest for my lookdown :)

Any pics? Barracudas most likely a Sennet they are in the same family. Spiny puffer most likely a Burrfish.
I am going to try soon, the water temp is very warm!

Good luck!

Nice. Thats typically what i've been catching so far this year. There were lots of people around OBI seining today... im sure i saw u guys... Still yet to catch any butterflies, lookdowns, angels, bigeyes, pompano, rudderfish, filefish, jacks, and what not. I would be happy to end the year with just ONE lookdown lol.

Its so frustrating looking at past posts from previous years from fish finder ... he caught 5 lookdowns and 15 pilotfish in one day lol. And he called that a typical catch.
