My 240g FOWLR

SDguy how is all your fish doing ? Have you got any new fish? I want several more butterfly's but I'm trying to wait till my buddy gets back from the Red Sea and see what he brings back! There are lots of nice fish from the Red Sea

Nothing really new to update. Since breaking down my reef, and putting the few remaining fish in my QT, my QT is full.

No more reef for you? Or you just starting over?
Just admit that you are changing reef into another fowlr :)

Update:

I saw some aggression from the xanthurus and the pelewensis/punctatofasciatus hybrid a while back... well it got critical. They almost killed my paucifasciatus! I trapped both in 30 minutes... no issue bringing them back to the LFS.

The red sea pearl scale is beat up though... I can't believe how fast this sort of thing can happen. Buyer be warned :D

Sorry to hear that!
Chaetodon xanthurus was the agressor?
I thought you also had Chaetodon paucifasciatus and Chaetodon mertensii.
Did they attack the punctatofasciatus as a group?
What time did it happen evening after the lights off, durring feeding time?
Any idea what triggered the attack?

I hope the damage wasn't too bad.

The punctato hybrid was the especially aggressive one. The xanthurus was a close second. They wouldn't let the paucifasciatus out of the corner (and I mean, the poor fish was sideways at the water surface!). The punctato would literally make a lap of the tank and each time go up to the corner and either dorsal spine or bite the paucifasciatus. It was constant. In fact, it took so long to catch the punctato because he would rather go attack the paucifasciatus than eat the food in the trap :eek2: No idea what triggered this. The punctato hybrid has never been aggressive to any fish, and I've had him for years. Oh well, I never imagined everything would stay perfect forever :)

The mertensii is tiny, so no issues there.

And done. Xanthurus and punctatofasciatus/pelewensis hybrid butterflies are gone, as is the bluehead wrasse, finally.

The red sea pearlscale seems to be recovering well. He's swimming around and eating today!

Regal angel dilemma. Since emptying my reef, I now have a yellow belly regal angel in my QT. Do I try to pair it with the grey belly in the FOWLR? The grey belly is larger, but has tiny gill spines, while the smaller yellow belly has noticeably large gill spines. Recipe for disaster?

I got 2 Red Sea regals coming in today 7/16/13 I'm puting them in a 120 gallon with eggcrate also got 2 declivis butterfly's & 2 tiny golden Red Sea butterfly's all arriving today by noon I hope! And one small gold flake angel! I hope to put both regals in my 280 later on after I make sure they all eating good ! If it don't work out I will have to move one to another tank! Let me know when & if you put your 2 regals together and how they do!

How do you like the aquaclear in your qt? They do well for water clarity? I ALWAYS have clarity problems when I QT. It's not bad, but it bugs me enough that I'm going to buy a new one. Also, do you use anything other than mesh in the filter?

I found water clarity is affected by the type of food I feed more so than the filter. I like the aquaclears a lot. I use the sponge insert in both, and the ceramic pieces in one.

For those who have run FO and reef at the same time, do you run them as a single system or as two separate systems? I see advantages, and disadvantages, to both approaches.

Ok Peter I got my 2 regals today one about 5 inch one about 3 inch I had eggcrate in between them for about 2 hours then I removed it so far they just swim by each other but that might change after a few days as they settle in the tank! But when I move them to the 280 I don't think it will be a problem! I will keep you updated on how they get alone! Both eating pretty good ! My tiny gold flake is eating also he is less than a inch! Do you have a Mitratus butterfly? If so how do you like him? I hear they are hardy fish! Let me know about them!
Thanks Michael

Ditch the agressors, good philosophy. I hate to see your hybrid go, that is an amzing fish. I'm big fans of both punctatofasciatus and pelewensis.

2 regals would be awesome, I wish I could keep 1. My vote is try to pair them, you can alway pull one out with your fish trap if things don't work out.

I remember reading you kept one regal in your QT or sump for quite a while until it ate agressively. How long did you keep him in there? Any recomendations for getting them to agressively eat?

I have a regal in QT and he liesurely samples food only when he feels like it. There is absolutely no consistency about when he eats or what he eats. The way he approaches and looks at food reminds me a little bit of the larvatus I tried a while ago because the regal completly ignores food that floats by his face but will swim across to a random peice of food and look at it. The only difference is that my regal will eat large bites of food when he decides to go for it, the lavartus ate little to nothing. I've had him for 3 weeks and he is eating enough to maintain body weight (the other regal I tried starved to death). I'm corossing my fingers :)

JJK is your regal in QT alone or with other fish? If he is alone when you ad another fish he might start eating more aggressive! I got 2 new ones today and one already eats pellets! I have them in the same tank with (2) 3 inch golden butterfly's and a tiny gold flake! So far all are eating!

Congrats, do you have a build thread?

I've read that they can "learn" from other fish. He is in there with Brazilian Longsnout(Prognathodes brasiliensis), a 1" Singapore Angelfish, and 2 wrasses. The longsnout is loving all the food I'm constantly tossing into the tank. Unfortunately my regal has a mind of his own but I'm hopefully with time and patience he will come around.

No build thread! I'm just HJ with SDguy! I saw his butterfly fish & decided to get me some! He has some nice fish! I'm new to forums so I got lots to learn about starting new threads! :)

I personally wouldn't. FO tanks usually have, and can, tolerate less than perfect water quality. Usually this isn't the case with the reef. For example, I use tap water for water changes on my FO without issue.

Congrats, that's a great start. I haven't decided what I'm going to do with mine.

Yeah, it especially sucks because I've had him for so many years!

I really didn't do anything other than wait. As time went on, he just got more aggressive in his eating. The yellow belly was worse. Didn't eat anything for many weeks (lived off the live rock I assume). Once he got transfered to the QT he SLOWLY started to show interest in pellets. He still doesn't eat a lot at once, but does eat, so just like with the grey belly, I'm hoping as time goes on he'll get more aggressive with his eating.
