OK! Enough chat...Starting a 1000g+ Reef

you are so right.

had to send my RO/DI booster pump back for a replacement. At least there is less water on the floor!

Couple of pics...I spent about a half hour trying to get shots of the clowns but nothing turned out good enough to post. The good news is that they came out to eat last night!

VERY rare Bearded Turbo sp.:

Just after I re-glued this to the rock. While I was vacuuming I knocked it into a crevace and had to tear up several rocks to extricate it. That's no easy job in 35" of water! Seems to have survived OK.

I had to pay extra for that!

Actually the tank is doing well. The HA is dying off and the rocks are getting their color back. WHen you take a look at it as a whole it really is progressing into a nice reef system. I seem to have more hermits than I put in as well, so maybe some came in on the rock.

Strange thing is that although they came in with red, orange, yellow, purple & other colors of coraline algae, the majority of the rock is now purple. I am not sure why but it could be because of the type of lights I am using, or perhaps that I have dosed the tank a few times with Purple Up. I figured that was just to encourage any coraline algae grow but perhaps it's just for purple?

I bought some live rock that had incredible colors. The only ones to survive are the purple and red. I think I am pretty fortunate that my tank has a lot of red coraline. Most only get purple.

Well there still are some remnants of other colors so I am hoping they will "take root". I was amazed at the oranges, yellows, and even bright green coralines that came in on the rock.

Currently I have at least 3 hitch-hiking macro algae including halimeda discoidea, Caulerpa lentillifera, Caulerpa taxifolia (or possibly Caulerpa sertularioides) and the Chaetomorpha I put in the refugium. I am really happy to see the halimedea making a come-back since it had appeared all of it perished in the transfer. It is one cool looking macro!

Once the Tangs go in the macro will get a good trimming ;)

Just read through your whole thread. It seems in even the smallest of projects problems pop up. It would seem you've got most of them conquered.

Can't wait to see it stocked.

Good job

Thanks for the kind comments. I popped in a ric rock last night and it has a strange sponge on it I cannot identify. I'll post a pic today if I can get a good one.

Good idea. I'll try to get one today too.

Question for you "Pros": I am having salt build-up on the underside of the euro-bracing. Can anyone recommend a way to deal with this in the long-term? It's very difficult to wipe it off since the water level is about 1-1/2" under it, but it will interfere with how much light gets to the reef.

A cleaning magnet will do the job, or a sponge soaked with tank water. Try to wipe it down weekly.

Can't use a cleaning magnet. My euro-bracing is 2" thick! Won't using a sponge with tank water just result in there still being salt build-up? I may actually be able to use fresh water sponge since there is so much water in the tank anyway...what do you think about that?

I am finding it very difficult to work over the tank without dipping my shoes in the overflow. I think I may have to cut acrylic to cover the overflow. One thing a friend brought up was how much water is evaporating and I remember thinking about that allot while setting up the system. BUT, I don't seem to be getting much evaporation. it may be because the humidity is so high in the room already.

Does the water level go down any when you shut the return pump off? If so, you may have to do that everytime you want to clean the salt creep . . . in order to stay dry or use a particular medium to clean your bracing.

I wipe my bracing off with a rag once every 1-6 weeks, depending on how lazy I am.:D The more often you do it, the easier it is to wipe off. I just dip the rag in tank water to moisten it and then wipe away.

Purple Haze Actually the water level goes up because when I turn off my return pump I shut off the overflow valves. If I don't I get a flood. I told you guys I like to live dangerously!!:D

Travis Well if everyone uses tank water then I'll do that and not worry about it! I just assumed that fresh water would be better, but it seemed difficult to accomplish.

Maybe someone smarter than me can ID the yellow thingy? I am assuming it's a type of sponge, but have not been able to find it in any literature or online.

BTW, a few of those rics seemed to expel some brown filament type substance when I put them in the tank...

I think it was a Tree Sponge, but it is in less than ideal shape. You may have fish nipping at it.
