The water levels for the smaller models have not been confirmed yet. The water level for the Alpha 250 Kone is recommended at 10".
Hey Jeremy,
Any idea when this particular piece of information will be provided for the new models? Has it been requested by you or are we just waiting for it to arrive on their time line?

Also, why so deep?

Because the thing is so big :)
Maybe. Jeremy, how low would you say the 250 would be able to go and operate properly in your opinion? I don't think you were in a position to answer it the last time I asked as you didn't have one in house yet. I could look back in the 250 thread and see what you had to say but I don't remember anything too specific. For some this is not a big deal, just make the adjustments and get it in the right level of water. My situation is unique in that I cannot possibly run my skimmer in 10" of water. No need for details, trust me 10" can't happen in my current set-up.

people have just found that they are getting better performance out of theirs at 10" depth. you can run it in less water, you just won't get all you can out of it. people used 8" as a starting depth. can you run it at 8"?

10" was found to be the best operating depth for this particular motor block / impeller size / venturi & volute size. A couple of guys went a little deeper, and air draw numbers fell just slightly.

would it be worth waiting for the Recirc model? that is coming in July/August right?

That's completely up to you, just being dependent upon wether you want an external or internal skimmer.

It's hard to say without having the specs yet, as the 170 could possibly be too big for this system, but that's all dependent upon bioload. If it's a very lightly stocked new tank, the 170 will probably be too much. If it's a really heavy load, quite a few fish (for a 40 anyways), and a heavy coral load and you feed the tank quiet frequently then you would want the 170.

The 250 was tested for approximately 3 months on a system that was 105g overseas, with absolutely no hiccups at all. Keep in mind though that was a heavy loaded, mature system, and the skimmer would pump out the nog.

As most Bubble King uses come to find out, you can not oversize these skimmers. They are very powerful, conservatively rated skimmers, and when you oversize them you just don't get the performance out of them.

Jeremy, Mojo or anyone else that can help me make a deicsion please help me...

Here's a little background on my 40 breeder with a 20 gallon sump.

I have 3 clowns, a bellus angel, a yellow spotted anthia, a hawaiian lion fish, a volitan with 40+ species of sps, about 8 different zoanthids and various other corals.

I hardly do waterchanges (I did my second water change for the year, the first one being on New years day), I like to feed everyday but with my current euroreef skimmer prevents me from doing so because it can't skim for jack. If I clean my skimmer and fire it back up there's an increase in bubble production but an hour later it decreases.

Thanks for the help!

Without seeing the neck size on the 170 I cannot say if it will skim consistantly on your system. Honestly For your system you have too many fish. lol. but If it was my set up. I would be looking at the atb 840 with the small pinwheel. The vertex in 100, the swc mini cone or a warner marine as 150. The alpha 170 has a smaller body than the 840 but will maybe have a little more power in the pump. Yet to see teh specs for the air and water draw for them yet though. You may even want to consider a small tunze skimmer. Just giving you some other options until we see the specs on the other alpha units.

TRD, Mojo mentioned the tunze skimmer. I will be getting rid of my Tunze 9010/9015 (I have both cupst) once I have my 170 up and running. I do not want to take this thread off track, so PM if you think you may be interested.

Status Update

Since its been a week since anyone has asked.... Any updates on when the skimmers will be shipped? Have they been shipped from the manufacturer yet?

Thanks

I believe they have been shipped and are in transit now. I will know more today or tomorrow on eta of these.

Thanks,
Jeremy

What about final specs. on the recommended water depth on each model?

I still don't have the water depth. I'm about to fly to Germany and measure these things up myself! ;) Klaus just got a couple of new toys in house (high end CNC equipment) and he has spent the last week and a half with reps from the manufacturer at his place getting them up and running.

what about the expected ship day Jeremy? Seems like if we still don't have the full spec, we are talking about ~2 months from now? Is that reasonable?

2 months? probably less than 2 weeks until the first shipment arrives. with the way we're all awaiting our deliveries maybe he should be referred to as santa klaus!

I think on the front page of the site, it says 2 weeks..Hopefully that is close :)
It has said that for...... well, since the start of this thread so I wouldn't get too excited about specifics on timing. You've got to have a "they'll get here when the get here" mindset with these things sometimes.
