Anyone want to go collecting on wed afternoon? Titusville

Yeah, we really are. Disney and all that crap, space program, beachs, inland rivers/springs. Not so bad down here! ;)

i would love to find stuff around here but from what people around here say there is nothing. maybe that guy knows something we don't. i have to go to the src sub commuity meeting weds evening but possible could depends on what time. i know where he is talking about pass by there everyday on test drives. just bring buckets and battery powered air pump. also i won't put any of that stuff into your tanks. they need to be qt. when george and i went to sebastian we qt every thing for a month. give me a call and let me know. might go out there in the morning and check it out

I figured to go, collect, take pictures and then figure out what everything was before throwing anything into my tank.

Not big on crabs, but there sounds like some cool stuff there to play with!

even if you know what it is it needs to be qt'ed. i live in titusville and i know how bad the river is and seen outbreaks and dead fish in this area. just be careful

MFP, you can find a few things at Titusville, but to find the good stuff you need to go to sebastian or west palm.

just went to the river where that guy told you to go and like i thought nothing. i did find 47 dead horseshoe crabs and some white film over the water and alot of bugs but other than that nothing. don't waste your time coming over here to get anything. i even took the 35 mintue drive to national wildife refuge and nothing there either. sebastian is the place to go.

it sounded like there was all sorts of stuff there. :(

I was thinking, what we need to do is start a thread/sticky with stuff that can be collected locally with pictures and ids. Last night I was thinking that going and finding stuff, then bringing it back then finding it was bad or whatever would be easier if we had pictures and ids available. Was looking to take a digital camera with me, and bring home only pictures. Then we could all discuss it on the board, what could be kept and what should be left.

I don't have any pics but could offer some descriptions of what I have found collecting locally. Will update in a bit.

Wouldnt it be great to get a good idea of what we can find, if its legal, and if its good for your tank? I think we need to make it a project. So over at sebastion, where specifically. I dont know the area but I can look at a map.

in sebastian the north tide pool is okay but the south side of the inlet by the park facing north seems to be the best. let me know if you want to go sometime and i can direct you in the right places. i can tell you what you will find there. most of the stuff you will find local wont be sutable for reef tank. cucmbers, serpent stars, and small no color gobies are about it. you can find some cool color pistol shrimp but they are mean. and as far as reef safe crabs i don't know of any. futher south where brannon goes diving is better.

Sebastian:

As far as crabs it's left handed hermits(which can be mean sometimes), decorators, and porcelains, and pistols (not as colorfull as you may be expecting). Snails there are nassarius vibex and obsulatta(sp), but you only want the vibex. You can google for pics to identify them. There are brittle stars, usually the nano sized ones. There are also cucumbers like joe mentioned. You can also find the occasional beadlet anemone (some also call the whart anemone), or the rock anemone(not the rock flower just the rock). Both of these anemones look similar and are fully retractable. Hurting the foot on either of these species is guaranteed death. They are atlantic anemones and be a bit on the aggressive side, which just means they COULD eat a fish. I have had both of these in with clownfish and never had an issue. As for fish at this location you can go two methods, a hand dip net and you can find seargent majors and other miscellaneous damsels around the rocks. If you purchased a seine net you can find sea horses, file fish, pipe fish, lots of various gobies, most common is the gulf goby. You can also find macro algae floating and collect large pods by swishing it around in water.

I have not tried snorkeling to catch fish at sebastian, every time we go the water isn't exactly clear enough to.

If you can convince lifesworks (Jason) to go, he can be a major help, he's gone multiple times and knows his way around pretty good.

thats cool. What are you up to wed afternoon? I really like cucumbers, and the gobies sound cool too. I am not a salt tank elitest by any means. How long does it take to get down there?

I picked up a pool "leaf" skimmer net. its flat on the bottom side and has a big net. Its really fine meshed too.

lol, I work out of town and can no way go during the week.

I would just like to provide a link to the state laws for collecting, I know they can be confusing and hard to understand but google can help a lot.

I am one that loves to go on collecting trips, and I know how much fun they can be, but at the same time, I don't want someone getting mad because they took something illegal and wasn't aware of the rules.

Also, I recommend setting up a QT tank for the things you may collect, and in no way recommend throwing things directly into your tank. :P

I am not planning on bringing ANYTHING home, except pictures and questions!!! Am now thinking of poking around sabastion instead. Still not far for me.
