How not to build a 750/1500 gallon build thread-Khaosinc 3/5/71-8/30/11

Khaos,
I have subscribed to your thread since day 1. The tank has come a long way and is maturing nicely. I also have a Sailfin like that and it is very camera hungry as well. Love the zoa rocks!

you still have lots of fans. keep posting.

my sailfin is also not camera shy.

I love the bargain bins too. It's a great way to see what corals will live or not with me. I guess you could say I do not have a blue thumb.

read the whole thing in one sitting about a 9mnths or so ago. cant remember lots of beer and a day off was involved. and been subscribed since!

Are those the par38 led spotlights featured in another thread? If so, I would love your evaluation of the lights

Marty

not that anyone really reads this thread anymore but hell, It gives me somewhere to run up my post count...

Project 1: I'm lining the inside of my hood with a roll of mylar that I picked up. I'm so gonna get a knock on the door soon. Hi power lights ordered, Mylar (used in grow rooms alot) ordered, fans ordered, water filtration stuff ordered...

Project 2: new moon lights. I was tired of the set up I had and picked these up to play with. I figure I can spotlight the corals that lumeness under actinics and have light to see the goings on in the reef tank at night. I have 12 of the 21 LED spotlights

my turtle was subjected to me playing with it. No other lights on in the room.

no, these are something I picked up on ebay. not nearly as bright as those par 38's I dont think (not that I have ever tried them). Hopefully in the next day or two I'll finish wiring them and see how they look. From the turtle tank test, I'm almost worried that 12 will be a bit much for nightlights so I might add switches to the build.

Hey Special K,

How are your rocks so coraline'd up? Any secrets to share?

Other than I don't have many calcium loving corals, and I use a salt fairly hi in it I really don't know why. Perhaps the fact that the afternoon sun hits my tank as well. Personally I hate it (mostly the part about getting it off acrylic) I can't even see in my sump anymore and I'm using really old t-8 shop bulbs over that.

$2 Frags? Bargin bins? Man, I need to move!

Khaos,

Glad to see that you're still truckin. Keeping that tank going may be the key to your recovery (okay, well, TINK and the tank)

Keep updating the thread.

keeps me sane anyway, or at least mildly frustrated. Little things that should take 20 mins take me 2 hours with lots of breaks. My hands don't like to listen to me and I have to do must stuff sitting down.

That being said I got the 'new' moonlights done with my tank. I used some cheapo $5 outdoor floodlight fixtures and the cute little led lights I got. Actually fairly impressed.

mounted in the fixture..

test firing them

up in the hood, starting to get all the mylar in there as well.

wires all zip tied up (clean wiring, not my strong point)

and of course, over the tank. Should work really well with my idea to be able to spotlight some of the corals. I still haven't done that obviously.

FTS for good measure. I really need a bigger fish room. I can barely get the tank all in one shot.

they are just some cheap 21 1w bulbs I found on Ebag one night. They screw in to a regular lightbulb socket. If they prove to hold up and stay working I might try putting like 60 of them over the tank for getting alot more blue in the tank and keep the T-5s running 10-12K only.

For your amusement, I got Tink to take a movie of the moonlights. I'm reqally happy how they turned out for a drunken ebay purchase, and only about $100 in to the whole project. If I get really carried away when the RKE shows up I might even try to match it to the lunar cycle.

I built my hood so I never had to move it. I have the lights 20" over the top of the tank so I can get my large hindquarters in there.

Theres lots of different options on ebay (where I found it) I would reccomend the 2 mil over the 1 mil its pretty lightweight stuff.

Tank is looking awesome! This is my first post to this thread, but have read it from page 1 as I got time. Good to see your well enough to keep tinkering with the tank. :p
