I'm going to try my hand at collecting next weekend.
What kind of net do you guys use? Can someone suggest where to get or how to make a good one?

As a kid in Coney Island (45 years ago) we made them out of fine mesh bags sold in the discount stores and a coat hanger. They were dark, and fish sometimes darted in to hide.

All we got were butterflies, but we got dozens. Sold some to pet stores for 75cents!

You can buy a siene net at any sporting goods store pretty much or a bait and tackle store. The only problem is you will need two people to work the net. I would suggest atleast a 20' net.

We used to use towels, did catch much though.

Local catch update:
Last week mid week all the fish I caught broke out with a severe case of ick! The Lookdown were completely white. However the little grey snapper didn't seem to have much on him. Thursday hooked up a UV sterilizer (Thanks Greg and Frank) went away to PA for the weekend. Came home figuring most of the fish would be dead. To my surprise everyone was still alive and looked great! The Lookdown were the only ones you could see just a few white spots. The Lookdowns are also eating frozen mysis!

Not out of the wood yet but things are looking better :)

What I did when I saw the ick was the following (this always worked for me when I had fish only, the exception is with new fish)
1. Hook up a UV sterilizer 24/7
2. Keep the tank dark only 4 hours of light per day
3. Plenty of places for fish to hide ( I see alot of QT tanks empty)
4. Temp high first day then lower it 5 to 7 deg for 6 more days.

5. I didn't do this but I used to years ago - Setup a QT tank with an under gravel filter. Use very little gravel. Hook up a pwoer head for the suction. Tee the effluent line from the powerhead to a UV sterilizer then return to tank. This will kill any parasite droping off to reproduce in the gravel when it becomes free swimming or at least thats the plan.

Anyway this is my experience, not fact ;)

Thanks Walter, but I was looking for suggestions on a good hand net to use while snorkeling.

By the way, the Bigeye is a beauty!

Funny you mentioned using a towel. That's how we started too.
A ten foot seine net was about $4.50 then, so it took while to save up for one.

I used to use the biggest tank net I could find, I even used a clear water pitcher once :) that was years ago not sure what they are using now?

BTW, Both Lookdowns are eating mysis and the larger one is even eating flakes! This Sunday will be 2 weeks in captivity! :) !

bobt2,
I'm not familiar with that area. What is another landmark to find it now that the OBI is gone? I assume the spot is sheltered from ocean swells by the tip of Fire Island, so it is a good spot for this weather.

Yesterday I tried the jetty at the point of Jones inlet. Shallow and dirty on the bay side, and way too rough on the ocean side. There were lots of blackfish, 12" and under, and lots of blue claw crabs, but did not see any tropicals.

ok, go to the obi. theres a road heading west past the first rows of houses. after you pass the houses theres an open area of beachs with jettys. mid way down theres a parking lot on the left. park and climb down to the water. it,s not hard and i,m 62. i swim to the west and work that area of rocks. the fish are in shallow water. it,s just inside the inlet. the water was not clean yesterday, but it was enough. i may head back their in a little while.

btw, the road has signs all over that say no parking, town of babylon. keep driving past them till you hit the lot.

it was packed with collectors this am. i got one 4 eye which i kept and a few spotfin that i gave away.no one got any seahourses today.

i,ll tell you what i saw today. i was snorkling on the flats south of lindenhurst in the bay. i ran into a 14" baracuda!40 yrs of diving in ny and thats the 1st one i,ve seen.
